38 SEGMENT DISPLAY

WHAT IS THIS:
My 38 segment display is designed to nicely display Chinese/Japanese numerals.
I call it PEKSEG. / 1820917873646411942 ←Here's the SVG
At 38 segments some may ask, "at that point why not just use a matrix display?"
and to them I say, yes...
WHY I MADE THIS:
I saw Posy's video on segmented displays and it made me wonder if anyone had tried to make one for Chinese/Japanese numerals. So I looked it up and was kinda disappointed with what I found. There are a lot of designs out there, and some of them are really cool! But pretty much every one I saw had 1 or 2 digits that were a bit wonky looking (either not nicely centred/poor readability, had noticeably smaller or bigger digits, or the whole design was squashed down to counteract some of these issues and looked strange to me)
I wanted to see if I could make a design that keeps all the numbers similar sizes, clear, and like they belong next one one another. So I just started drawing designs in a notebook when I was bored. I'd say I went through at least 10 different designs until I figured this one out. I actually gave up at one point but then had a dream about adding a bar in between the upper half, which would let me make 百, 千, and 万. That idea basically led to this final design from what I had already been making. I was really only focused on making 0一二三四五六七八九十百千万, but because I had added so many segments, by the end it was capable of making way more stuff.
Ultimately I just made this for fun. I don't have any plans to use it. But if you do want to use it just credit me, link to this video, and let me know.

twitter.com/pekerokotan/status/1820917873646411942 Howdy, Lot's of people are asking for a font. I was in the process of making one, but after giving it some thought, I realised it'd be better if instead I just give you all a raw SVG of the the display. That way if you disagree with the way I made some symbols, or want to make more, YOU CAN! 😎🫵 All that I ask of you is to credit me as the creator and link to this video if you want to use it! Thanks for all the love 🫰これはぺっクセグのSVGです!

@@aiexzs "as few segments as possible" is not the goal (and never was). Cost savings or overcoming technological limitations could be. But this doesn't solve neither. Having as few segments as possible was a cost saving measure in the past with 7-14 segment displays. Even if it was the goal, standard 16x2 LCD has 5x8 pixels per character (5x7 without cursor) which is practicaly the same number of elements as this display. This may be more legible using japanese characters than a dot-matrix (I can't read japanese and I don't recognize japanese characters, so I can't tell). That is prabably the niche this is targeting.

I looked at the SVG and if you filled in the gap it would be, and if you made the blank square cells into segments you could probably display more Kanji. Also symmetrical with the gaps filled would be easier to manufacture. There's a Japanese company out there known as Noritake that makes custom vacuum fluorescent displays with heavy customizability and no minimum order quantity. You could in theory order this display or any other segmented display from them. Also if you venture into dot-matrix, you can order displays with a homemade bitmap font as the default font, which is something that piques my interest to do.

Maybe. An 8x8 dot matrix would require 6 bits to address. Log_2(38)=5.25, so we'd also need 6 bits to address this bad boy, but it's specifically designed to render characters. Just eyeballing the 8x8 matrix, it looks like it could probably do a comparable job. Seems like a tough call. I'd say we're on the border of practicality, rather than far beyond it! And I'd wager a 64 bit display (utilizing all 6 bits fully) designed by this person might surpass the quality of the equivalent dot matrix!
@lagcom
@lagcom Месяц назад
@@PropheticNomad You don't "address" displays, as most displays don't have memories. You would need six bits to store the number 64 and the number 38. To store the states of 64 pixes and 38 pixels requires just plain 64 bits and 38 bits. In a way, only needing 5 bytes to store the state of a digit would be a benefit of using a 38 segment display instead of a 8x8 matrix. A better comparison to a dot matrix would be a 6x6 which would require a similar number of pixels, or a 5x8 which would require the same number of bytes.

Why not have a line of LEDs and have the viewer interpret the binary value? /s I think there are a lot of reasons this display is great. The font is much nicer than any font from a matrix of square, hexagon, or round pixels. It is conservative in the sense that there are longer segments that could have been represented as seval separate units. Although it might not be super optimized, the font has some good angled segments where it counts, giving the characters a rounder/cleaner look. This font really shines with languages other than English, because it represents strokes in a nice way.

Yes, who could forget that currency symbol with worldwide proliferation. Used for the well known and very much still alive currencies like the Canadian pound, Australian pound, New Zealand pound, Jamaican Pound, Fijian Pound, along with the Hong Kong Pound, and the globally accepted currency of the United States Pound. But, jokes aside, you'll notice that the Euro is also missing. Both would actually be quite easy to display with these 38 segements. And you don't see me crying, do you? No, I cry like a _man:_ behind locked doors. I'm not trying to say that the pound isn't widely used enough. But it's only really in GB and a vertical stripe from Syria to South Sudan - and I had to look that up because they're really not very widely known currencies.

I actually hope this takes off. If it was ever produced at scale, this 38 segment display could actually revolutionize the aesthetics of a certain area of electronics. If not, it'd still have a unique retro niche to fit into. Either way, I hope I see more things like this in media because it's totally awesome.

This is great, but one criticism: 38 segments leaves you 6 segments over-budget to represent segment IDs with a 32-bit value, but 26 segments under-budget to represent segment IDs with a 64-bit value. If you don't want to represent each segment with a bit, but instead flip each individually, either way you're working with 2 bytes. The big advantage of the 7-segment display is that even with an optional 8th segment, such as a decimal point, it can be easily represented with 8 bits (or just 1 byte, working one-at-a-time)-a breeze even for low-end hardware of the 80s and 90s. Now, I know just brute-forcing everything to overcome any problems is the style these days, but resorting to 64-bit hardware for a simple segmented display feels a little wasteful, and frankly out-of-character for such a simple display. Technically, working one segment at-a-time, we could make it work with 8-bit hardware, but that's significantly slower. If you can somehow chop off 6 segments while leaving it readable, that would be perfect. The alternative is to create a 64-segment display, which could make full use of the 64-bit value already needed in a practical environment. It would certainly lose that vintage feel, but would produce far more readable results (and would go against your desire to find the fewest possible required combinations).

What's the reasoning behind having the "pointy" segments on either side of the second horizontal line separate from the square segments? They are connected on the third line down.
@pekero
@pekero Месяц назад
A lot of the Arabic numerals and latin alphabet would have weird triangles cutting into them if they were connected and not using those segments, and If I just got rid of the points altogether like someone else suggested before, it wouldn't nicely connect if the top part wasn't being used. The horizontal line and the two vertical lines wouldn't line up and would be jagged like a step. I supposed I could have raised the point between the 2 vertical segments in the top half to meet at the top of the horizontal line, but I didn't think of that till just now... But I don't think I would have done that anyway tbh, I wanted those pointy ends there to help fit with the rest of the design, rounding off edges when possible. Sorry, it's kinda hard to explain what I mean, I hope you get some of what I'm saying here lol 🥲

In case anyone is confused about 0, it is an Arabic numeral. The traditional Japanese/Chinese character for zero would require many more segments to replicate on a display like this. I believe '0' is more commonly used in Japanese and Chinese as well. Japanese/Chinese character for zero: 零

Thanks! Honestly I saw Posy's video on segmented displays and it made me wonder if anyone had tried to make one for Chinese/Japanese numerals. So I looked it up and was kinda disappointed with what I found. There are a lot of designs out there, and some of them are really cool! But pretty much every one I saw had 1 or 2 digits that were a bit wonky looking (either not nicely centred/poor readability, had noticeably smaller or bigger digits, or the whole design was squashed down to counteract some of these issues and looked strange to me) I wanted to see if I could make a design that keeps all the numbers similar sizes, clear, and like they belong next one one another.

I was considering making a font that's monospaced, but the plugin I use for making fonts kinda freaks out when I turn off segments because the size of the character changes depending on what's on or off, so I sorta gave up on that for the time being. But if I ever do make a font of it, I'll post it in the description here or on my twitter 🫡
