2004 Dodge Dakota Quad Cab with a recently built 6.4L, 392 stroker. It was built by Modern Performance Engineering in Orlando FL, and tuned by HemiFever .com. More videos will come once I get it to the dyno.
My 2005 2wd quad cab is 4700lbs. They really beefed the truck up for 2005 onward. My buds 02 4x4 quad cab is 4500lbs. These are weights taken from an actual scale, minus our body weight at the time. Both with the 4.7.. at the time. Mine now has a 5.7 hemi in it, sure would love this 6.4 in there instead. The short bed, 2wd regular cab dakotas from 97-04 were considerably light, as you said.
That is one badass Dakota you've got there. I've got a 1999 Dakota Sport with the 318 Magnum and it is a 4x4. I just have a few questions: Should I stick with the 318 or do a 360 swap and build that, or do a Hemi swap? I know that the 4x4s are harder to work with for the Hemi's, but would Holley's newer Hemi swap parts work for this and make it "easier"?
Your JTEC PCM is completely different than an 2002+. In my opinion, you should stoke a 360 to a 408, and be done. Don’t do a Hemi. My 04 and the Hemi use the same NGC PCM configuration, so it’s an easier swap, with minimal electrical changes. Good luck on your swap and build.
@@Stroke392Dakota Thank you for replying, and providing that info. Had a feeling that it wouldn't work, unless countless months of time and effort is put into it. And besides, I've seen that these 360/408 Magnums can still get impressive amounts of power.
@@bradenbensema8633 You’re welcome sir. You can still get 500hp out of 360/408, which is far more the the 545RFE transmission will ever hold. Good luck with your build, and let me know if you have any questions. I’ll do my best to help. Have a great day sir.
@@Stroke392Dakota Speaking of transmissions, what would you recommend? It currently has a stock 44re, and I know that it won't handle the power later on, and I was thinking of putting an upgraded 46re into it.
Charles Marshal The headers are actually Gibson Ceramic Log Manifolds. They're right around 650.00-700.00 depending on where you get them. I managed to snatch them up from a guy on craigslist for 300.00 brand new never opened. For the torque converter I went with a FTI 3400 stall. They don't advertise making them for the 5-45 RFE tranny, but they will custom build one if you contact them. They're local here and Central FL, and most people who race around here professionally swear by them. I'll warn you they aren't cheap. I don't need any parts made, but appreciate it. I actually work at an Aerospace, Military Defense based machine and weld fab shop. The biggest thing is coming up with a plan. Have everything purchased waiting to go in, unless you have another reliable way of transportation. I'll answer any questions I can, or point you in the right direction.
Forgive me for not responding sooner. From my understanding 01' and up PCM will work using SCT. I personally used most of my old harness and only spliced in the engine sensors..
Great post. I was thinking of doing the same thing but I'm willing to chop cut saw whatever to squeeze in the bigger hemi but planning on power adders to will be a hard. Hmmm. Hell cat dakota
I'm not sure what you mean by a bigger Hemi. A 5.7, 6.1, and 6.4 are basically the same size externally. Internally is where the difference is. Either way good luck with your build. It's definitely worth it.
If you mean GVWR then yeah it's around 4,500 pounds. I was referring to curb weight which is around 3,400 pounds. All depending on which engine the truck came with from the factory of course. And these are specs based on the Regular Cab Short Bed (111.9 in. WB).
Awesome truck man! Im thinking of doing a 5.7 hemi swap in my 05 ram 1500 that came with the 4.7 4x4. So my question to you is what all did you have to fab or replace to make it fit? Any little bit of help would be much appreciated
Since you have a Ram already, you'll need a 04-05 Hemi. The best thing is to find a donor truck that has been totaled. You'll need the PCM, wiring harness, and apps box located under the battery try to control the electronic throttle body, unless you choose to buy a rheostat gas pedal. Also change out the torque converter, since they 4.7 and 5.7 have different factory stalls. If also recommend having a shop perform a quick learn on the transmission so it can get an accurate reading of the CVI numbers. Hope this helps, and thanks for the comment.
I am planning a 5.7 hemi swap in my 2001 4.7 dakota. Hemifever told me that the jtec pcm from my 01' can be used on 03' to 06' hemis. Did you use your old pcm or do a wiring harness swap? I have a lot to learn and would like to get the chance to chat with you at some point.
It was built. The motor can out of an 04 Ram. After cylinder 3 went out, I bored and stoked it. Full build top and bottom. When the video was taken, the tune wasn’t set right, therefore you don’t hear the cam lope. The cam is a custom grind from LPM, for boost. The motor is built to safely hold 24psi... but I’ll never push it there. The plastic intake won’t hold on my motor. My buddy’s 04 Ram has dyno’d 870 rwhp with basically the same motor build, on 18psi build. That over a 1000 crank hp. Not bad for a daily street truck.
james wagner Yes it is. The thread I used as a guide, he did his in a 4x4. YellowDAK I believe was his name. You’ll have to buy or modify the oil pan, as where I notched the front cross member, and re welded it back solid.
I worked at an electrical engineering company at the time, so I had two friend help with it all. Hotwire makes a complete harness for this swap, if I'm not mistaken.
There was indeed a 318ci, but they also had a 360ci (5.9L) which is the same size block. I used a 345ci (5.7L) block, with a stroker kit to achieve the 392ci. Granted there isn't much room left, but enough to make it work.
+Stroke392Dakota I have a 2002 Dak (Sport) 3.9 V6. Any chance of fitting something in so massive if I'm willing to cut open and/or modify the hood? In all actuality, I don't want my truck to look pretty at all, and there are a few reasons for that.
I have an 02 ram 1500 4.7L that needs a new motor, I’m just worried about fitting a hemi with the 45RFE and motor mounts. Which hemi would work, and would I have to fabricate motor mounts?
I would recommend buying a 04-05 Hemi, and using a 05 Ram PCM/TCM to control it as they have the best tuning capability. You will need the APPS(Petal Position Sensor) to operate the Hemi’s drive by wire throttle body. If you locate a totaled truck, make sure you get the box. In 06 they went to MSD which cuts the amount of running cylinders which will become a pain in my eyes. Do not buy an 03 Hemi, as those are wired differently, and yes you’ll need to make motor mounts.
I wish I either had the money to do this, or the time to learn how, but unfortunately, I'm right in the middle so I have to browse RU-vid and live vicariously through other bad-ass Dakota owners. Awesome truck, that's all I have to say.
I had friends help me here and there, but the majority of it I did myself. The overall amount of money invested I prefer not to say publicly. I've made some references in other posts.
Francisco Hernandez A 6.4 and 5.7 are identical masses. The Bore and Stroke are the only things different between them. In other words if one fits the other one will too.
Daniel Diaz About $15,000.00 to build the motor and do the swap. Granted these was completed over a couple year period, so it wasn't all at once. First was just the motor swap, and then a year later was the motor build. Once you get this far, be prepared to buy a tranny, with is another 4-6,000.00.
Stroke392Dakota how much would it be just for the swap (stock hemi engine) and getting everything running properly with the accessories like AC and power steering ? Can the stock 5 speed transmission even handle the hemi? I'm just curious cus I'm interested in building a nice fast truck. I'm stuck between this and a Chevy S10 with an LS
Daniel Diaz If money isn't an issue and you want to be different, then go with the Hemi, but the LS S10 would be easier to complete, as they make complete swap kits now. There are several Hemi swaps using the car LX platform and their PCM. Hotwire will make you a complete plug and play wiring harness, Schumacher sells the motor mounts, oil pan and pickup tube. There's a lot out now I wish was out when I originally built mine.
Just the original hemi swap was right around $5,000.00, with $3,200.00 being just the the motor, harness and PCM. Find a good deal on those items and it would be considerably cheaper.
YoMonkeyness I wasn't apart of a forum when I did the original hemi swap. However the motor build is on Hemitruckclub.com under the Florida Chapter. Look for James' Motor Build. Good luck with your build.
It's not a factory 6.4L. It a 5.7 (345ci.) bored and stroked to a 392ci. The stoker kit will set you back around 3,000.00, not including anything else. With the LX version hemi's, I'm pretty sure they're all front sump motors, where the trucks are rear. Which that could interfere with the front crossmember, and steering. If you're gonna commit to doing the swap, then fabrication is one of the things you're going to need to be sufficient at.( or just know someone who is) Then figuring out how to fit a stock 6.4 in there shouldn't be to difficult. I knew a guy who was putting a 440ci. in a 2001 r/t. I said, "is that thing gonna fit?" He's response was "learn to use a torch, a welder, and a grinder, and you can make it fit." So I went to school for just that. My only advice to anyone considering doing any motor swap is don't commit until you have all of your parts in hand, and all of the wiring figured out. Parts are not cheap, to find out they won't work, and you're stuck until new ones arrive. It took 4 wks to get some of my parts in I needed. Another, don't forget with adding horsepower, you will need more fuel!!! On the money end of the spectrum, what ever you think you'll need, you'll probably spend double that when it's all done. Good luck on your swap!
I think people don't realize how heavy these trucks really are, I have a 1997 2wd Dakota Club Cab and with the 3.9 engine stock, it weighed 3800lbs, with the 5.7 Hemi engine swap, it weighed 3960lbs, after the 9.25 axle with rear disc swap and 20x8.5 Cragar Torque thrust wheels with Toyo proxes ST2 275 40 20" tires, it now weighs 4160lbs!
Arthur Cisnero, All it takes is a little time, and a lot of money. I've answered a lot of questions below in the comment boxes. If you have a specific question, I'll do my best to answer it.
Nice swap since the alternator, A/C compressor, and power steering pump are pretty much in the same location as the 5.2 and 5.9magnums. I'm looking into this for my 2000 Durango but I have some questions. This is an old video but hit me back if you can, thanks
stunnasam21 What’s your question? There’s a lot I’ve answered over the years in the comments of this video. Let me know and I’ll do my best to answer it.
@@Stroke392Dakota yeah I've been reading through them, I guess my question was more related to engine mounts, A/C and power steering lines, etc. BUT after staying up most the night doing research, I think I'm just gonna 408 and supercharger my 5.9 Magnum. I already have a built trans and it's 4x4. I just don't have the time or resources to get all the little stuff done in the time I want it done. Appreciate the willingness to help tho, gotta dig deep to get info on these swaps lol.
stunnasam21 Being you’re on a JTEC PCM and not on a NGC, I would highly recommend you do what you’ve said. 408 stroker is by far the best option for your current setup. Also... being you’re 4x4, stick with the supercharger setup. I’d recommend turbos for top end, but you’re looking for the instant torque curve, so stick with the supercharger. Good luck on your build. Send me a link if you decide to put the build online. I’d like to see your progress.
boone Honeycutt We don't have vehicle inspections in my state. Other people have completed the basic 5.7L swap using the donor vehicles PCM, and have passed smog inspection. It can be done.
you say the 4.7 is a joke but i keep up with the 5.7's and 5.9's around where i live and have out ran some 5.0's. granted i have a superchip and had my heads redone.
+Alex Lyles, My 2002 4.7 Crew Cab Dakota is really starting to impress me, I have a superchips tune, 70mm throttle body, NGK iridium plugs, shift kit, 180* thermostat, axle/disc brake swap w/ Richmond 3.91 years and eaton true trak locker. I also did the Durango dual piston front brake swap w/ powerstop pads and rotors, American racing 20" torque thrusts w/ Hellcat sized Toyo Proxes 275 40 r20's, Belltech 2/4 drop w/ Durango 36mm front sway and 22mm RT rear sway bar. The truck was originally bought for a Hemi swap but I'm starting to really rethink it because the truck is pretty quick now and I think if HP tuners releases the JTEC PCM credit/tune a turbo would be easy and it would be a beast!
+Ryan Prettyman i loce the 4.7 they are quick and like i said i have my heads done a super chip and coldair intake . i wanna stroke and bore it out and put a cam kit in it and regear my rear-end. and how good is the shift kit?
+Alex Lyles, shifts really hard, especially if you use the full kits but you have to remove trans for that, I did it on my 5.7 Hemi powered 1997 Club Cab Dakota, it's a beast! but due to my Divorce I will need to sell it, asking $5700
Oh I see. All the cool stuff is not in California... I imagine my idea might be legal. It's not going to a crate engine but a stock off the line 6.4L 392. Maybe a modified exhaust but that's about it. Just the thought of a little truck that roughly weighs in at 3,400 lbs. With a HEMI just sounds suicidal. XD
Same with me. I want to mount a factory 6.4L in a 97 Dakota I'm looking to buy. Also a regular cab with short bed. It's just a matter of saving up for the engine and making the the truck smog legal for California.
LOL. Sorry Ryan. I wanted to go fast, and beat R/T’s with a quad cab. The look on the owners faces when a stock junkyard Hemi beats them... priceless. Of course that was stock for stock. Obviously there’s plenty of built 408ci putting out massive numbers. I enjoy being different and dreaming big. Godspeed!
Nice. Considering running a Hemi in my 95 Dakota. Reading the comments has answered what to do about trans and wiring. Is there a good place to start for more information?
