In todays video I'm working on my sisters driveway with the RK 55 Compact Tractor and RK by King Kutter 7' Box Blade, I prefer the box blade over land plane when you have bigger rock and really rough surface.

I love the sound of the box blade over the driveway and gravel. It looks so much better after the grading process....

The box blade and the grader both have their uses. The box blade is great for what is being done here. If he were putting down new material after then the grader is the tool for that once you start getting it all down. They are both great tools and have their own uses.

Glad you talked about the Clevis style 3 point attachment pins versus the stud type. That fully welded clevis hitch on the box blade is so much stronger & the difference in a great built boxblade & a "value" one. Many people don't realize why one 6' BB might be several hundred $ more than another. Quality of steel, thickness of steel, fully welded (not pieces bolted together just to make shipping cheaper), strengthening gussets, not just some cheap Chinese ripper shanks, etc. I love Everything Attachments implements out of North Carolina, but glad to see that RK (& King Kutter) build/source quality. If there was an RK store closer to me I would definitely be a customer!

Great video Mike. I’ve got a 60” Land Pride grading scraper that has the rippers of a box blade but the open end and angled blades of a land plane. Only had it for about 6 months but seems to do the job! It’s all an experiment! :)

Good job: right tool for the job. As you mentioned with materials going sky high recently,a little(or a lot) of maintenance throughout the year could be by far the most cost effective solution.

Hi Mike, love all your video's and have seen the one with the RK Landplane. I might suggest that a set of serrated blades on the Landplane. Although they are "spendy" you might become a bigger fan of the Landplane vs., the box blade even on that bigger rock road. There are some clips on YT that show those blades in action...

You mentioned in the other video that you were concerned that they were running too long. Actually I wish they were longer. I enjoy watching them and look forward to whatever you have planned. I'm anxious to see how your "hunting stand/ great escape" tower will turn out. Sounds like a good spot to sit in the woods, watch deer and have a cold one. Keep up the good work and its ok to go longer. We'll all watch.

i was wondering what you preferred in those situations. i think a box blade is more versatile..but a land plane is best for a particular situation. Thanks Mike

Rear blade would clean rock out of ditch and deposit it onto crown. Box blade takes off crown and deposits it in ditch.

I could only afford a box blade, and it’s the bomb! It can do everything a land plane can do, and much more! A land plane excels at at finish grading, but a box blade excels at everything else, and can do a pretty damn good job at finish grading. For anyone who’s looking for their first, perhaps only three point grading implement, the box blade is far and away the go to implement. And personally, I’ve found the rippers are great for breaking up deeply packed gravel and dirt, but for most grading operations, using the just the blade (more or less aggressively, according to the situation) will do a fantastic job. Learn to use top link AND side link to your advantage. Box blades are the very best value for your buck.

Nice video Mike . Your mom and sister are lucky to have you next door . Can't imagine what it would cost having to pay someone to maintain that driveway . That gravel driveway would drive me nuts getting my truck dirty almost every time I drove on it . LOL That tip about the hook up is good to know in buying a box blade .
@TrehanCreekOutdoors
@TrehanCreekOutdoors 5 лет назад
When the time comes around to do this job again, I expect to see you have bought a good dump truck and are hauling in loads of rock for your sister's drive. Waiting for that video! If you buy the rock straight from the supply pit or yard and haul and spread it yourself, you can cut the cost down a lot. Doing a little each time you have to grade and it will spread out the work load and the cost over time plus make a great drive in the end.
@tlm3574
@tlm3574 Год назад
Ditch the dump truck. I did and bought 14' dump trailers. Haul more and the license and insurance is nothing compared to dump truck. Plus they are easier (by far) to load .

I will soon buy my first tractor and will be needing a box blade to maintain a 1/4 mile driveway. The driveway goes over a small hill then down to the main section of my land. My plan is to have a dozer do the first cut at an angle where the whole road leans towards one side (the low side), then I will maintain with the tractor. I'm thinking a 35HP Kioti, but I'm not sure if that is powerful enough since my land is at 7,300 ft of elevation. The cabin build will start very soon. I will start my own channel on YT with the progress and trials and errors since this will be my first attempt at this. Hopefully withing a couple of years I will build a 1/4 acre pond to stock with trout, etc.

Seems like everyone with diesel in their veins is getting the "itch". I know I am.Last 4 weekend I've been at my farm either making progress or sticking tractors in mud holes which isn't all that bad: means I get to crank up the dozer to recover tractors too:) Yesterday I got the ford 2910 out and sprayed some fence row and around barns etc with herbicide,used tireject(love that stuff) to fix a thorn hole on the front tire of my JD 5320,rode fence line in my ford ranger farm truck and fixed some fence. Had some good video too: on a bad memory card :( Major bummer.

Bring on part 3...☺ On another thought, have you ever contacted the State, County or Local City and asked if they had extra torn up/ground up old pavement they needed discarded and have it dropped off on that driveway instead of the local landfill? Whenever they might do local projects, of course. Just a thought.👍

The problem is you don't have the right Land Plane for this particular job. The EA brand is heavier duty and has the scarifier shanks like your box blade does. That driveway could use a few inches of #57 on top of the solid base you already have.

How much does that box blade weigh? I have an old one there that’s 5’6” long is that considered a 6ftr or 5’? Never used it. It looks like it was made with 1/2” thick metal. I’m worried it’s a little too heavy for my tractor.

@comlbbeau
@comlbbeau 5 лет назад
I think conventional wisdom is that if you need scarifiers you should probably be using a box blade.
@paybax
@paybax 5 лет назад
andrew dykstra Yes that’s a great attachment. I repair and maintain gravel driveways for a living. The rippers are great for shallow potholes. The key from this video was how big of rock you have. A land plane will skip and jump over big rocks and therefore not do a great job but the box blade will. On 95% of the driveways I do a land plane/grader scraper is the best tool. I dig out the pot holes first with my toothbar.

It depends on material I think? I have roadways that are filled with similar material as what is in this video except my material also has much bigger stones as well as they are filled straight from a quarry without the material having been screened. Land plane is useless on them. I'm wondering would a box grader also be useless on that type of material with large stones? You can't get box graders in Ireland but I'm thinking of importing one.
