It's intriguing to think why bother trying to be so perfect? Because one day you want to be a master. Why did Indians bother mostly to make beautiful spear points?? Same answer! Self pride. Thanks for sharing so much of your thoughts while knapping Sir ✌️💚🍄

There are also examples of arrows that were sinewed in an offset manner so the arrow head would come off if attempting removal. I can't recall exactly, but there is a journal of an army surgeon back in the day that made ref to those issues and developing a means of extraction.
@KnapperJackCrafty
@KnapperJackCrafty 6 лет назад
Yeah, I've read about that. The methods of extraction for barbed arrowheads is what I think you're referring to. If the stem of the arrowhead is contracting, on a barbed arrowhead, it becomes loose easily when the arrow is pulled out. If the stem is expanding, the arrowhead needs to be lodged in bone or other stiff tissue in order to guarantee that it will come loose from the arrow shaft. The technique for extracting barbed arrowheads, inserting two "spoons" that surround the arrowhead before it is pulled out, is well documented dating back to at least the Roman empire. The arrowheads that the army surgeons were dealing with during the Indian wars were mostly long metal arrowheads that would penetrate deep into bone and required a different technique using a sort of pliers.

As said before I don’t think size matters🙄 as much as design. They learned from past generations how to make a arrow head and used that design no matter what size flake or spall they had. Again it was a tool not a art piece. To many get hung up on what they think is how it had to be in size and shape. If you don’t agree please explain I love learning if I’m not going down the right road.

It depends on the tribe. Sometimes every size was the same design, and sometimes each size had it own shape.

Are these arrowheads being used, or is it just the pursuit of making something in a difficult material using traditional methods?
@KnapperJackCrafty

Both. But this particular one is for display.

for my hunting points, I usually leave them thick, they will do much better than the thin.
