Thankyou Professor Thorsby! I found your channel almost a week ago and you have no idea how much you have helped me since then! im currently taking philosophy and since watching your videos i have grasped each and every one of your lectures. i was struggling with this course a bit but you clarify everything for me so thankyou so much. You are great!
Proud to be like no. 117.I became so impressed with this highly important formal logic course, that I just had to subscribe. Recommended for everyone. The course is particularly important for enthusiasts of software programming and computer info storage such as myself. You will learn things like how to spot fallacies in your own arguments, and thus increase the quality of your online postings. Five stars out of five possible, which means on the scale between 1 - 10, 10. Good job Dear Mark, with a greeting from Iceland! I rate your course 10!
Fantastic channel and great videos. I decided to study Philosophy and return to university 20 year after my graduation in Law. An old desire but a great adventure with all difficulties of a new beginning. Your videos helped me to overcome many difficulties, especially in logic. Extraordinary didactic, and very clear explanations. May thank you Prof. Dr. Mark! Ernesto José Toniolo (Brazil)
Great video on fallacies. At the end you said I will have fewer friends if I point out their fallacious arguments. If that's true, then all my remaining friends will be logical. I shudder at the thought.
Thank you so much I needed this=)=) my professor is tad bit old and he struggles with helping the class understand his points, but no one say anything because we don't want to hurt his feelings. P.S I love old people I have nothing against them lol
You do a great job Professor Thorsby. This is the first video of you so far in the chapters where your hair is leaning towards punk rock, therefore it can be concluded that you go punk rock off camera. Rock on and thanks for the lessons on Logic.
12:43 the way he says or jail or something is so hilarious. I was scrolling through my shit while this was playing in the background and when he said it it caught my attention like hell
you sure these informal fallacies only really apply when the sample space is infinite ?? in CS or anything boolean related we mostly limit the sample space therefore able to say p>q p therefore q
This is a common misunderstanding of Paley's argument. He is not arguing from analogy. He doesn't say the watch looks designed and so is, and some natural things look designed, so God. Rather, he says if we examine the watch carefully, we will see that it was designed. That is an argument of the best explanation. He says also, if we carefully examine some things in nature, we see the best explanation is design. Interestingly enough, Dawkins now says life appears designed, so for some, depending on their metaphysics or epistemology, ID is the best explanation. If it appears designed, then it could be designed. As a side note, I do not believe in ID.
the visuals are working against this lecture. Your hand-written videos organized many concepts visually on the fly. If you are concerned about the the previous-lectures' structure, I attest you didn't fall into a stream of consciousness. When you switched to these slides and threw in a ton of animations the visual coherency was destroyed. You can consume visual organization in a moment, use that strength.
