"GridScape" is a free After Effects preset that will let you quickly arrange a large number of layers into a 2D or 3D grid. To download, go to www.CreationEffects.com and head to the Freebies page. If you download the GridScape, please like or comment below.
This tutorial shows how to install the preset and how to apply the effects to your layers to create your grid. Place the .ffx files into your Presets folder and you'll always be able to access the effect in Adobe After Effects. GridScape can space multiple layers out evenly or randomly (or a combination of both), on all three axes. Customize the grid spacing, and control the Position, Scale, and Rotation of all the layers together using easy controls on separate Control Layer. Set the number of layers you want in each row (X axis), column (Y axis), or layer (Z axis). GridScape can be used on Solid layers, Shape layers, Precomp layers, Footage, or Images.

I mentioned in the video I would put the expressions for the CC Sphere effect in the description, so you can make grids with 3D spheres. You can find the two expressions, which go on the "Light Height" and "Light Direction" properties, at the link below (scroll down to Rick Gerard's post).
