This is a tip for using the 3D Orbit function within Inventor, it explains how to prevent your 3D model from going crazy and shooting off screen when performing the 3D orbit.
Apologies for the Sony Vegas Logo in video, I'm currently evaluating and will purchase if it the videos become popular. #Autodesk #Inventor #Tutorial #3DCAD #Design #Engineering #CAD

You can also select any object and it will orbit around that part. It's easier because you dont need to get to the navigation wheel, you can just use the middle mouse button.

You can also get orbiting bij pressing the F4 key and the left click. With 3D mice it is also necessary to once in a while choose another orbit point. 3D Mouse uses the same orbit point.

Any way to turn on automatic orbit centering on current view like it is in Fusion 360 ?

Fantastic, this will make modeling much more enjoyable for me.

Neil... agree the navigation wheel is garbage. However, you can use it to center the orbit as well. Just move the nav wheel over the model and click the "Center" button. It in the middle area, top left. When you click here, it sets this as the orbit center. I mostly use the F4 + LMB to orbit 99% of the time.

Ha, love the commentary. The steering wheel was always in my way. ...a real pain. Pick the sector you want and drive your cursor through it. It works, It just took me half a decade to "get it".

Nice tips and tricks Neil in your videos. Could you do a video or two on top-down design inside an assembly file? I have an issue that you may explain in one of your videos that I have never quite understood. When you create a part inside an assembly based on another part, you'll be at the point of selecting a face or a work plane for the sketch. When I click on one of the origin planes that's parallel to the face, everything is fine and I create the sketch on the corresponding face. But when I click on the face of the existing part to create a sketch, an adaptive work plane is created. Why would Inventor want to create this work plane when I select the face? This is totally unlike creating a part inside a *.ipt file.I just don't understand this unless it's specifically for the sketch to be adaptive. Thanks Neil for the help and keep up the good work.

Jesus. You may save me: im used to work on so called "architectural" display cube view, with X and Y on the ground and Z ax perpendicular to it. Being on assembly, after i set manually the default Inventor's cube orientation to what im used with, and starting a part, than a 2d sketch, my cube orientation is freaking out back to inventor's default. Returning to assembly, all good. Why the hell?

@Neil3D
@Neil3D 10 лет назад
Vytautas Ivanauskas Sorry I just realised what you meant there, you're using shift+mmb to activate the orbit? Yea it doesn't work with that method, this only applies when you use orbit and see the on-screen circular crosshair/cursor. Hold F4 or use the orbit button.

I find myself more and more using F4+LMB to orbit and this tip works just fine. Small tip but very useful.

Could you do a video tutorial on engraving a scale around the surface of a truncated cone? I have a rotary motion device which has a fixed part with a scale marked in 2 and 10 degree intervals (10 degree intervals marked with longer lines). The scale is labelled every 20 degrees around an angled face (0 20 40 60 80 100 120 140 160 180 160 140 120 100 80 60 40 20). The angle face tapers to a sharp edge where it meets the rotating central post. The post is marked with a single line to indicate position relative to the fixed part. Google goniometer head for an idea of what I'm working on.
