I bought a Rupes LHR12E a few months ago and it's great. This comes with a 5" backing plate. If I wanted to use a smaller pad (and stay with Rupes) , then I had no other option than to buy the LH75E. But as I wouldn't be using this that often this seemed a bit extravagant so I decided to try and make a backing plate on my 3D printer that will allow me to use the pads that the LHR75E uses. This 80mm diameter backing plate has been designed to be the same weight as the standard Rupes 5" (125mm) plate so that there are no vibration issues - watch here for weight comparison • Video . As the plate has a much smaller surface area than the 5" plate (but obviously still uses the same motor) I have noticed less tendency to stall. Although, to be fair, the machine is pretty good in that regard as standard; it's just better on the smaller pad. The plate is tapered so it still covers the mechanism but I have also allowed for a small clearance between the plate and the rubber sleeve so this design basically incorporates the popular washer modification without needing the washer. This further reduces drag on the plate. (The plate also fits the Rupes LHR15ES & LHR15 Mark 2/3.) It works very well. Review here www.detailingw...
I hope you enjoy this and I look forward to reading your comments. Don't forget to like and subscribe if you aren't already. Thanks for watching.
p.s. Thanks to my friend Alan W, who offered advice and feedback in putting this backing plate together.

Well I followed through and bought one. It fits the LHR15 I have perfectly and even comes with a spare bolt and washer should you need it. It runs as smoothly as the bigger plate but the much smaller pad really does get in to tight spaces and complex curves. I would recommend it to anyone with a 12 or 15 Rupes machine because for very little outlay it gives you another polisher!

Exactly what I am looking for! Well done mate, a great idea. Watching the machine run you seem to have got the counterweight ratio correct as it seems to be behaving exactly the same as the bigger plate. Smooth and quiet. I want one!

Kamikaze collection made a backing plate for this maybe 3yrs ago. Forgot the name of it but should be able to find it online.

Thanks, I looked but couldn't find the Kamikaze Beast plate available in 3". The other thing is that the Kamikaze plate leaves the mechanism open, whereas the one I made keeps it covered. 👍

Gee Whiz RS the kamikaze plate does work very well but it’s always good and refreshing to see other people providing new and different options. Thanks for sharing.
