3D Printer Suppression System Using a CO2 Fire Extinguisher

3D prints can take a long time to print. Not wanting to be chained to the printer I wanted to rig up a basic suppression system that would extinguish a fire should I be away from the printer.
The IFTTT app notifies you that the extinguisher has been trigger and I've got another wifi socket that turns off the power to the printer if the extinguisher socket is turned on.
Switch - amzn.to/3nqiSXG
Linear Actuator - amzn.to/39mGSWR
Power Supply - 12v DC 3A
Wyze Cam V2 - You'll be able to get this from Ebay, the ones on Amazon I think are a Chinese copy.

Man, that was super fun to watch! Thanks! Always awesome to see a person actually experimenting with fire extinguishers

Awesome video, love seeing the demo. Thanks for the idea, using yours and others to come up with a system for my 130w co2 enclosed laser.

Sounds great! Good luck.

I'm looking at something similar for my Laser, my idea is a IR detector wired to a pnuematic solenoid with the co2 extinguisher connected to the solenoid. the outlet from the solenoid to be piped into the Laser and the IR sensor also looking into the Laser. The co2 handle valve can be permanantly open and the pressure stopped at the solenoid, when activated by a fire the valve will open and fills the laser with co2, should also be wired to the Laser emergency stop. Maybe give it ago.

Sound interesting. Post me a link if you have a go. Just be careful what pipe you use to run from the extinguisher to the solenoid. The pressure in a CO2 extinguisher is upwards of 800psi at room temperature and increases greatly with temperature.

A bit of a Rube Goldberg machine, but nicely done! 😁

Had to Google that name. We have W. Heath Robinson as the UK equivalent. Thanks for watching and commenting. 😁 🥳

@@GeeWhizRS Well I am from Czechia so it is not like Goldberg is "my" equivalent 😁... almost seems like there is a theme of overly complex machines with almost "fictional / traditional" characters who were coming up with them

What happens if the internet is down? There is a reason that automatic fire suppression systems rely on simple glass vials and mechanical mechanisms.

This setup was more of a proof of concept rather than something I actually use now.

Hi this looks awesome! Could you do a full tutorial to show the IFTTT app and the linear actuator setup? Also, how much is that CO2 fire extinguisher? Is there a good place to get it cheap?

You should be able to find a local fire extinguisher maintenance company that will let you have an old CO2 extinguisher for cheap if not free. In the UK they have a 10 year life before they need to be removed from commercial premises so companies may let you have one rather than paying to dispose of. This setup was more of a proof of concept rather than something I actually use now. Setting it up via IFTTT was a bit of a faff but quite logical with a bit of Googling. All you are doing really is adding power to the actuator with a smart socket. The trick here is using the Wyze camera as that can recognise the sound of a smoke alarm. From there you can use that signal to do what you want.

@@GeeWhizRS Or you can use smoke detector with output pins, to get rid of camera.
@GeeWhizRS

@@kasparsbogdanovs7684 yes you could. Of course with a camera you have the benefit of watching your printer go up in flames. 😂

Would co2 hurt the printer if it was on?
