Depends on what program you're using. in 123D design for instance there's a text tool. You type out what you want and then it generates that text in 2D. Then you can extrude the text to thicken it. You can then draw a path that the text can wrap around. The next thing you would do is cut that text out of the 3d object you want to add it to with something called a boolean difference.
