tiny 16T gears are far from being optimal. Better go for at least 20T so slipping is much less likely. For the first stage 16T might be OK since it introduces much lower torque
Compared to your strain wave solution it looks bulky but is is probably back drivable. Can you make a video with the pros and cons of the different solutions you tried so far.

Hi wow, not at all, the pulleys that are concentric are using the same axis. What needs to be carefully adjusted is the two tensioners. They have to keep both axis parallel.
