@@bettersax and @Chad LB I'd like to get the Chad LB but thinking the 8* tip opening might require too much air. How does it work with the 7* or 7 (or smaller) tip opening? I know that some step baffles have problems with the smaller tip openings. Thanks for your feedback!

Definitely the Chad LB 7* sounds really good I admit. But most 3D printer plastics are pretty soft. I wonder how durable they'd be over time compared to a cast resin Ottolink. I'd still order black, I'm oldschool. I do my tables on a double sided japanese whetstone. 240/1000 like glass.

In 2022, my Syos Smoky alto mouthpiece is showing significant bite marks after only about 200 hours of playing. I don't like to use mouthpiece cushions. But I do get the dark sound that I like, over the full range of my Selmer Paris Series ii. Setup: a Rovner 1RL ligature and Rigotti Gold 3 Medium reed. Don't like the Syos ligature or cap. The ligature can't be adjusted up or down on the reed; the cap falls off frequently and is hard to find.

The problem is...a good or great player or just an experienced player can adjust his/her approach and make any even poorly made and faced mouthpiece sound good or at least play with their signature sound. I've tried these pieces and in the first 30 minutes, I adjust, and they work. But, it dosen't last and I would never gig on one. They do not measure properly, they are very roughly made and don't work in the way that a professional musician would require. The pros who use them , well, many of them don't use them any more(see Chad L-B). And... as I noted, anyone with good chops can make nearly anything work. The material of thses pieces is the cheapest crap anyone could use and they are not "finished" at all. They just prove that "anything" can work ...for awhile...

I purchased a 3d printer lately, and remembered this video. I went to thingiverse and searched for an alto mouthpiece. After printing and sanding the table flat, i was really gladly surprised. It actually worked, and was better compared to my cheap plastic one that came with the horn. That was a cheap upgrade :)

You could pay me a $1000 dollars, and I still would not play these candy jellybean mouthpieces. I only will use hard rubber and they refuse to make a mouthpiece out of hard rubber. The 3 D printing is their little gimmick, and they refuse to publish tip openings and chamber info, instead they say, fill out this chart, and we'll make you a custom piece, yet they can't even speak common sax mouthpiece terminology. Real Hard Rubber mouthpieces are made by Meyer, Selmer, Vandoren, and Otto Link however, there have been great plastic mouthpieces made in the past by Brilhart, Runyon, Claude Lakey, and Beechler. Tables should be perfectly flat, for suction test, so a textured table is definitely a no go.The table must be flat for the reed to seal, and to have a really accurate facing curve.

@vladimirlopez7840
@vladimirlopez7840 4 года назад
The only thing that is a lie is the fact that people are charging 5 and 600 dollars for a mouthpiece. In the end a mouthpiece is a tube with a beak and some or no baffling etc. not much involved there that CNC machines or 3D printing can’t easily replicate.

I own Lorenzo's mouthpiece that I play on my P. Muriat tenor sax. I love it, as it absolutley gives, gives me the sound I have always wanted! Prior to this, My favorie was the Meyer 5* with an H frame ligature, recommended by Scott Paddock himself! I enjoy playing that mouthipiece too but the SYOS mouthpiece is a clear winner. Everyone who is accustomed to my playing has remarked how much fuller, rounder and richer I now sound. I definitely would love to have one for my alto sax as well. Whereas I was leaning towards Lorenzo's signature mouthpiece again, I think, like the sound of Godwin's too and would be happy to give it a try. I did not have a hang up about getting my mouthpiece in a bag. it was a cool difference to a box and it is very durable so, I'm confident it was pacakged suitably. I did have an issue, like you, with the table. it was not smooth enough and so I took the chance and lighlty polished it with some very fine emery paper and that fixed that issue instanty! Nice video Jay! I always appreciate the content you put out.

Awesome vid as usual Jay, you sound great on all of them. Appreciate the depth and clarity of your videos in general. I was rather annoyed by all the attention I received when I started playing one from their first batch in 2017, but the ability to personalize the feel and sound made it well worth it. I hear you on the give and take of rubber/metal vs plastic, I tend to see it as another option vs better or worse. I tend to switch a lot and like the freshness of revisiting all of my pieces for a few gigs/recordings and the SYOS are always in the rotation for all four horns. Has anyone else found that newer reeds play a bigger part in the quality of the sound with SYOS than it does on rubber and metal pieces?

In any case, the listener should make up their own minds about any mouthpiece or product, I'm just offering my honest opinion. If I really want to review something I'll just buy it anyway. I don't say nice things to get free stuff. The last thing I need is another mouthpiece.

ABOUT SYOS 3D AND SUGAL 3D Hey Jay -Gary Sugal here. As always a great review, about the Syos mouthpieces… and some great playing .. Kindly note Syos and I are two different companies. THUS I wish to clarity a few thoughts. . I think you will agree that your sound is your voice. No one can imitate your speaking voice. There is no mouthpiece on the planet that will imitate the sound for example of Getz , Brecker, Brandford. to name a few In fact it is well known that it takes between seven and ten years to develop your own “unique” sound. If you listen to a Brecker recording-just one or two measures in and you know it’s Brecker. I’ve been making high end premium customize CNC metal mouthpieces in house for over thirty three years. Most recently I’ve introduced a complete line of 3D printed mouthpiece produced from a proprietary food safe filament that allows me to sand and polish the mouthpiece as you would a metal mouthpiece…: thus removing any layers of filament that could eventually harbor bacteria. Over the years I’ve kept my models very simple; .there has always been a model ONE and a MODEL II . i.e. a MB I & MB II , a KW I & KW II , ..a NEW YETI .. our FAMOUS SUPER GONZ I .. now available in ten colors ten sizes, five models and a CARBON FIBER material. .. plus a Super Classic Alto I and II , (soprano-baritone - in my que-coming very soon) . .. so the BIG DIFFEENCE IS : I've replicated every one of my time TESTED CNC METAL mouthpieces in to a 3D version... NOTE : The model one has no baffle and a model II has a “snow hill raised baffle.-by the way you can only alter the raised baffle (I call a snow -hill) so much. in the software. That internal curve or hill ( not the table ) will create a bright sound - and too much adjustment it all starts to sound “kazooist” .. Our NEW FIBER CARBON material is a game changer BIG TIME !. Our return policy, packaging w all mpcs. come in velvet bag inside a Lucite box, build on sliding ligature included, . and a acrylic bite plate hand set for comfort and ease of playing .. personal hand paint (signature ) free mouthpieces I've given away (about $15k) All this info will be email over to you. … As the site evolves please check in from time to time : www.sugalmouthpieces.net

Another great post from a great guy - thanks again, Jay!!! It does bring up my pet peeve though: what the heck does the “seal test” thing actually DO, except confirm that if you decide to create a suction on your reed in the middle of a solo, it’ll hold the suction. ??? Hint: nobody ever does that! Let’s all just quit with the suction thing. These mouthpieces sound pretty freaking good, and yet NONE of them pass the seal test! I love your posts, Jay - sorry about the seal-bashing. Can we still be friends?
@bettersax
@bettersax 4 года назад
The thing is with my HR and metal mouthpieces, I can feel immediately if there is a tiny imperfection in my reed alignment when doing the suction test. Also, if my reed is damaged I will notice that as well, but it's a rare occurrence these days. I think these mouthpieces seal more or less, but can't hold the reed against the facing because of the texture. One has to be even more careful when putting the reed on these...

All sounded good. I liked the first mouthpiece the best on the exercise, but Godwin more on the ballad. I don't like their ligatures. I liked the first tenor the best. One thing I found was that not being a pro, I don't pretty good on all pieces. I found the brightest one I tried to be hard to control...I think a true pro can make them all work. I switched to SYOS from Jody Jazz. Ferranzo for tenor...and it's similar but I found SYOS freer blowing than Jody Jazz and more powerful.

Great video, but I remain skeptical. I tried them several years ago. Admittedly, it was before the artist models, but the result was so far off the mark from what I requested via the online form, that I decided it wasn't worth another shot. I found it very boxy and stuffy and at least at that time, most of the examples that were provided sounded boxy and stuffy! You sounded good on all of them, Jay, but I felt like it was a crapshoot with what was supposed to be the brightest mouthpiece (Scott P) sounding significantly darker than the middle ground. Considering the shipping to and from France, I still think it would be a difficult process to nail the right mouthpiece, if indeed there is one for you, in two attempts. In my own search for the right mouthpieces, I went through dozens. That's why I value retailers like WWBW so much, which has a generous return policy and try out period. I also agree about the textured table issue, the cheap packaging, and psychologically, I just didn't feel like the material was worthy of the price point. Obviously, they can work well because as you point out, many fine players are using them today. I do feel however, that there's a phenomenon that exists with some players being very tolerant to mouthpieces, while other equally fine players need very specific characteristics from their chosen mouthpiece. I am in the latter category. I just know within seconds whether I'm going to love a sound, and within minutes if I'm going to like its play ability. Then, there's Adrien, Sirvalorsax who can play ANYthing! LOL

I need some help with my reed! I am using an "Accent" brand mouthpiece on an alto sax of the same brand, with a "Vandoren Paris" 2.5 reed. If you can send me your E-Mail, I will send you pictures of the reed, ligature, and mouthpiece if you can, my reed is a little splintered at the thin end, so that may be the problem! But I screw my ligature on very tightly, so it may be that, or it's my lungs not producing enough air (I'm asthmatic). One way or another, I want to play music with my Alto Saxophone!

I see Lucky Chops using these all the time, and they have a wild sound! I play alto and only have used Selmer C or Jody Jazz... looking for a brighter sound!

With your amazing playing skills you sound good on all these mouthpieces 😃👍, but my favorites here are the Godwin Louis, Mornington Lockett and on the Tenor definitely the Chad LB. I agree with you that a hard rubber mouthpiece of the same shapes would sound better, as I have experimented with designing and printing a mouthpiece. Pro for these commercial 3D mouthpieces is that you have almost unlimited shapes and combinations to choose from and form your tone (and some of the colors do look actually nice, like the dark blue you selected), con it looses a bit in sound because of the material (and maybe tolerances like on the table) and definitely is not cheap. And a printed legature..nono..better to use a regular one ;).

Rousseau Jazz Bari mouthpiece. Enjoyed your show on “cheap Bari mouthpieces”! Some of them were really very 👍 I recently started to play my old Buescher Bari Sax again. I must tell you I am becoming more comfortable with it; but I have some decisions to make. I play on a Hite rubber which is good ; but I think I can play on some others, ie your enjoyable videos. Have you played on antiques like mine: but more importantly, what might serve me and it better for all around playing. I just started to watch your show on Syos Pieces! Best Wishes, Richard PS Have opportunity to get Yamaha 52. What do you think?

Well, it would be nice to order a custom to my specs mouthpiece but these are just way out of my price range. However, I will be ordering a copy of Chad's etude book.

Chris Goddard. Hi Jay. My problem is I have started to play my tenor extremely sharp (quarter of a tone). Interested to hear about Syos, but don't know what to ask for. What shape of mouthpiece will help me play less sharp. Is it the baffle, size of bore, tip opening, etc. Can you help?

Hi Jay. I have just bought a Cohn Pan American tenor off ebay and was wondering what mouthpiece to use as I normally play alto. I think I will go with your advice and stick with Meyer 7M ebonite for now. I've not been in touch because of complaints from neighbours about my practising. I've bought a Sax Mute 1 which I hope will solve the problem. Hope to speak soon.

I have an alto SYOS custom 6 full bright and full power mpc. It sounds really good but nowhere as good as my Eric Marienthal Retro Revival Metal 6. My Eric Marienthal mpc plays so effortlessly and in tune and the altissimo is like butter. I use with Rico Jazz Select 3s filed. I’m never trying another mpc again. This is a perfect fit for me. Maybe I can sell my SYOS really cheap if anyone is interested

this seems so scammy, 3d printing, even with the abs they rampantly use, is really cheap. it costs cents to make and can be automated, and can cost just cents for mouthpieces like this. i dont know how they can justify selling them for $100-$200, since there doesnt appear to have any post processing.

Hmmm, I don't really understand the price tag for such mouthpieces and why would anybody be willing to pay that. The manufacturing cost of such mouthpiece would run in range 5-10Eur max. I know it because we order 3D printed plastic parts in our production runs. Colours variety adds to the cost because the need of stocking different colour materials. Colour is hype now but still not worth hundreds of Euros. The designs of the mouthpieces are pretty standard and two sliders vary just few auto-generated design parametrics and spit out automatically genreated STEP file to produce in any of 3D printing service vendors - probably would run a fun project for myself and for sharing. Still non-solid and still sounds a bit plasticky to me. Even not caring to machine smooth table top finish?... Worth 50Eur max in the best case for playing around with new toy. Great marketing though.

These all have good qualities. I just didn't like the Mornington Lockett or the Chad LB. The lower notes were okay, but the upper register was really, really twangy. That's not a criticism of your playing, Jay, at all, or of the signature players', or of SYOS. Personal taste only. I learned sax within the context of orchestral music, and that's where my training ends. I like the mellower, denser sounds. The Tivon Pennicott and Scott Paddock are my hands-down winners.

You would think these mouthpieces would be cheaper considering they are just 3D printed right? Am I wrong. Is 3D printing expensive?

Godwin the best, balanced. But why so much air and buzz on all of them? Strange. I've got over 200 pieces and rarely get that much buzz on any of them. What do you think is going on, Jay?

A couple of weeks ago I purchased a custom one on online and had it shipped from France to Asia. Shipping was quick, had to pay custom duty. I thought I was taking a risk. However, to my surprise it sounded great, exactly as I had envisioned it, even when failing the pop test. I actually send an email asking if it is supposed to be that way.
