I am a snowcat operator, this design is awesome! As an operator thinking about the snow as water and the cat as boat helps a lot and I think it could possibly help in your design, thinking about the skid plate as the haul of the boat and the tracks like paddles. Snowcat tracks are designed with the grousers or "treads" strait with no bends in them to help with spin turns so the grousers slice through the snow instead of getting caught. and for sidehill grip they use ice picks which are the bumpy sharp things on the grousers and offsetting each grouser can help with sidehill grip while still allowing easier spin turns
@justinklenk
@justinklenk 3 года назад
Dude, always wondered about those features on the snowcat's treads, thanks for explaining! Also the 'paddling a boat keel on water' is a great analogy.

If this is scale model of real vehicle you are planning or it actually has important job... then one kinda must care. Its not like modifying this design a bit would chance it that much visually, just needs bit more surface area to lower the ground pressure.

This is really cool. I have operated snowcats for about 10 years. You mentioned the one big thing I would change, make the tracks wider on each side to float higher in the snow. The only other thing I would change that I don't think you mentioned, the weight distribution is too far back on your model. Cats need the weight evenly distributed for the best climbing.

On our tanks we use cross shaped ice cleats on the tracks to fight the lack of sideways traction on snow and ice, maybe something similar could work on this design?

I think part of how actual snowcat treads are so effective is down to the fact that they've usually got a plow on the front aswell, that way they're not dealing with lightly packed snow they're cutting into the denser snow below the fresh layer.

You know the design is good when it start to look so good too! One thing I noticed was the rear idlers had all the snow in them. By driving from the rear, all that energy can go directly into crushing/spitting the snow out rather than having to pull the torque thru the track. It would put the bottom of the track in tension rather than the top. From a length in tension perspective: to climb a wall/cliff, only the bottom would be in tension rather than the entire track. Dozers and tanks drive from the rear, it makes sence.

To make your tank have less ground pressure and wider tracks, you could always make duckbills. Basically duck bills are flat plates that were attached to the side of tank tracks in WW2 to make them be able to handle snow more easily, and I think if you made duck bills for your own tank it would have a lot less ground pressure, therefore floating on the snow much easier. Also I love the ski on tracks design, never would have thought about that, great video!

When you mentioned the really loose powder snow being a worst case scenario, I (living in Finland and having really seen many different kinds of snow) wondered to myself: what about just slightly wetter snow that gets stuck everywhere and gets packed hard-as-concrete (and is the perfect kind of snow to build snowmen and snow fortresses)... And five minutes later :D And near the end, "I don't think I've ever had this happen before" - you ski like someone who knows what they're doing, I'm actually surprised you haven't seen that kind of snow before. It isn't that uncommon, at least in here. But anyway: awesome video, awesome project, and wonderful mountain scenery, thanks a lot!
