Wasn't expecting to laugh so hard when you assembled your mini-me. Great video, as always.

Glad you enjoyed it, I had great fun making the mini-me. I will hopefully have some similar projects coming along in the near future.

Could you have used the turntable that comes with the Mini when scanning the elephant? Great job showing the entire process!

Yes but it is probably a bit to heavy and may damage it.

Hi Jim, Thanks for doing this video, how do you think that the revopoint range 1 would do for scanning a full size surfboard aprox 6foot 6 inches, obviously its flat and curvy, how do you think the revopoint range would perform for it?
@JimsonMakes
@JimsonMakes 5 месяцев назад
It is certainly capable of scanning something that size but you will need to use scanning spray if it is shiny and you will need to cover it in a random pattern of the supplied marker dots. You then scan it in marker mode. Without marker dots the scanner would struggle to keep track on objects with low detail or features. Often it can take several attempts to achieve the desired result

Jim great video, So the "Range" is not the best of both worlds, large objects and precision detail? will it work for smaller objects? Curious what you would recommend. Can you also use the range for smaller objects with satisfactory results? The Range details shows it has a 0.1mm precision and the mini has a 0.02mm precision. I am new to scanners and still doing research but for finer detail the mini would be best and for larger objects the Range would be more suited, correct? I have an ender 6 printer, so I am looking for the best option to pair with that printer. Thank you. .

Many thanks for taking the time to watch and comment. The Range is definitely more suited to larger objects but as you say you do lose a bit of detail. I generally use scanning to miniaturise objects, so a bit of detail loss is really not a problem. There is some good guidance to ideal scanning size on the Revopoint website. The Range is not great at scanning very small objects but can be used to safely scan faces. If you want to scan small detailed objects then the MINI is much better, I have achieved some highly detailed scans with the Mini ( I have made a couple of videos on this) but it is best suited to objects that will easily fit on the small provided turntable. The MINI is apparently not safe to use on faces. There will obviously be a limit to the detail that can be achieved with the Ender-6. Another option to consider would be the Revopoint POP2 but I have not personally tried that scanner. As with all these consumer grade scanners they do take a lot of practice and experimentation to achieve the desired results and there will be some element of post processing involved.

3:08 Hi I wanted to ask, what program was this exactly for being able to merge the scanning data? I don't remember if it was mentioned previously, thanks.

Many thanks for watching. I used the latest version of RevoScan5 which is in Beta currently, worked brilliantly.

This was such a great review - thank you. I've been looking into 3D scanning and photogrammetry off-and-on for a good 20 years now, and it always seemed out of reach (either poor results or out of the price range for a hobbyist). Much like the current state of 3D printing, I feel that we're finally getting to the point where increasing capabilities and falling prices are converging to a point that is getting me excited again about the possibility of doing my own scanning.

Glad it was helpful, Yes it is certainly becoming much more accessible to the hobbyist. I too have been interested in this field for many years but as you say photogrammetry is generally very disappointing and previously 3D scanners have been prohibitively expensive. These Revopoint scanners give very good results if you are willing to put in the time and effort and experiment. I have achieved some great results. All of these consumer scanners will have there limtations but they are a fraction of the price of industrial scanners.

I'm having a tough time with the scan quality. Every surface is lumpy with bumps. Can someone please tell me how to get a smooth scan of a person or an object? What settings should I use for editing? I would really appreciate all the support. Thanks in advance.

I think you need to increase the brightness a bit till you see a little bit of red in the preview of the depth camera. Too much blue isn’t good. I have the mini but I would go for the Einstar. Better tracking ans pickup of dark surfaces.

I‘m using professional 3D scanners at work. It would be interesting to see how the scanning process would be using the Range in comparison.

I use Attblime AB2, it works very well but can take several hours to disappear ( or even a couple of days on some surfaces ).

I don't think I tried it on a human face, they would need to have their eyes shut because of the lights. The best scanner for faces that I have used so far is the Revopoint Miraco but it is a much more expensive scanner
