15 years ago ( May 2, 1995 ). 3DO was planning to make a huge comeback
with an upgrade / standalone console to their existing Panasonic 3DO REAL Player.
Panasonic held a 3DO/M2 Press event the day before the first annual E3 Expo at Downtown L.A.'s famous Westin Bonaventure Hotel. Former Chairman Trip Hawkins was the host that evening of the event.
For more info on 3DO / M2. Here's the Press Release:

Pics of the M2 hardware:

*The Press conference was filled to capacity - there was no place to sit and I didn't have a tripod for my camera. So I apologize for the jerkiness of the clip.

For people criticizing the camera guy saying that he is the typical troll, all of his reactions were totally legitimate. The bs this press conference tried to pull continues today with companies trying to sell games and consoles with only prerendered videos. Kingdom Hearts 3 at 2014 e3 was the same crap where they put a life bar at the bottom of a prerender and everyone assumed it was gameplay. This guy boasting that his prerendered segments look better than the gameplay of finished games was a joke. It would be like comparing final fantasy 7's cut scenes to final fantasy 9's gameplay and claiming that ff7 was graphically superior. Funny thing was that aside from the shooter, most of his samples looked inferior.
@hotd34me1991

Correct. The dude that everyone thinks is trolling in the video said at 2:54, "too bad it won't look like that", was legitimately correct. A couple of the games for the m2 that actually did make it to arcade, 5 to be exact, didn't look as good as that. I own the arcade game "Evil Night", I have a complete playthrough in my profile if anyone is interested.They looked good for their time, but not as good as what was shown. But most definitely, any e3 or press conference for a video game, they show a bunch of prettied up footage on high-end pc's, then they deliver a shittier version of the product. Watchdogs was the best example to date that I can possibly think of. The footage shown in e3 2012 made the graphics look unbelievably amazing running at 1080p and 60 frames per second, perfect shaders and all! and then in 2013, they showed another trailer where the graphics looked slightly crappier for some reason? THEN in 2014 the final product looked even worse then what was shown in 2013 running at 1080p upscaled and 30fps. Basically they had an awesome video 2 years prior and they slowly lowered the graphics month by month til they could make it play on a console, and that is what they released. They had to lower the graphical quality on the pc version to match the console versions. That was such a ripoff.

These are incredibly obvious pre-rendered graphics and the 3DO itself was hit or miss. His skepticism made perfect sense and in the end it was correct.

I have to disagree. All he did was compare the oncoming systems to the current 3do basically stating we're all the same just a different graphics cpu on each but we have been here first we have the largest library thus far and are a car in motion on the highway at 60 not just getting on from the entrance ramp. He then compared current systems (including 3do doom, the worst port) so show the improvements the m2 would have. As far as the M2 games he distinctly says the system is a work in progress but while the competitors are at his specs now upon release when the M2 does release (he gives no time frame) it would immediately topple these new systems and they would perpetually stay years behind. Obviously the 2 games he showed were beta short game play. There was a not console there and somebody playing it displaying mis truths. These were captured videos of early gameplay to show the basic idea and how it's an improvement over current unreleased console or those on the market already like his own. Nothing he said here was misleading in any way. He didn't announce a date for the M2, he specifically states in the 3 bullet points "doing it right" which means no rush, proper software, best mass production practices. So not only is the camera man (who I appreciate shooting this video) a troll. But now you are too . Stay under the bridge matee

axelfoley20 What makes you say that? Sega Saturn had 2 CPUs in it, N64 had a Z-buffer and texture mapping (and a UMA, similar to the M2 ), they both have a similar polygon count. So what exactly do you see that I dont? To me the M2 seems like a souped-up, more expensive N64. It is basically an N64 with more dedicated chips, seems like it would be easier to program for but also way more expensive for consumers

To all of those people saying the camera guy was right...No the Hell he was not. The Panasonic M2 was a 6th generation console. Every single feature talked about by the speaker was well represented in gameplay on all 6th generation hardware that released. The only thing he was right about was the player movement but these were all tech demos from the 1990's so that gets a pass from me. For reference- There were arcade cabinets with M2 hardware running commercially released games from Konami. Further, there are almost complete unreleased games for the M2 that show quite clearly he's full of it. @lightdark28 - Yes, the price of the REAL Player was certainly a major factor in the demise of 3DO. Even the $200 price drop in late 1994 wasn't enough to compete with Saturn and Playstation in 1995. So you can tell by my snickering in the clips I wanted something more concrete than superficial tech demos. All we knew at the time M2 was gonna be offered to consumers in two ways.1) 3DO physical upgrade to keep cost down 2) A full fledged M2 console. Fact of the matter - M2 was behind schedule

Yeah. The M2 wasn't projected to be much of a leap at 3D rendering from the N64. Probably why they nixed it. I'm sure it would have sounded better, but I doubt they could have landed the games to come back with this.
@Jabjabs
@Jabjabs 2 года назад
@@alexandernorman5337 It is funny looking at what actually came out on the M2 boards to see where it all landed. A half step between the N64 and Dreamcast. It wasn't a large enough jump to be really noticeably better over the N64 and if it lasted long enough Dreamcast/Ps2 would have absolutely slammed it.
@alexandernorman5337
@alexandernorman5337 2 года назад
@@Jabjabs I'm sure that's why they cancelled it. It was intended for a 1996 launch. And maybe its meager graphical superiority to the N64 would have won it some market share. But come mid 97, they knew that a single memory bus with only 8Mb was way too limiting to compete with Dreamcast - only a bit more than a year away. And since it was the memory that was its biggest drawback, they couldn't pump it up by just installing a pair of faster CPUs and clocking up the graphics chip. They would have to redesign the whole main board. They smartly cut their losses.

My limited knowledge of the Saturn and PSX suggest that trying to do dymanically-computed textures on them would be extraordinarily arduous. With M2, it's a snap. This lets you easily and cheaply pull tricks like "video feedback." In fact, one of our earlier demos had a TV set object which was displaying the current camera view. So when you moved the camera to point at the TV screen... It was pretty cool. _-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_ Leo L. Schwab -- D the demo tape featuring the D&D-style monster fight and the racing game were fakes... excuse me, simulations, created using Alias. The animations were based on a set of theoretical rendering speeds, which were later shown to be tremendously optimistic when actual silicon arrived. Still, the numbers we did get out of BDA were pretty damn impressive; 300K polygons/sec in a typical case (2x N64), 500K if you're dilligent... _-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_ Leo L. Schwab - THOSE* demos! You mean the ones with sailboat in the lagoon and Bossie the cow (actually a hermaphrodite; it had horns *and* an udder) behind the cyclone fence? I had completely forgotten about those. Yeah, those videos were generated using a software simulation of the BDA chip. They were extremely legit, and in fact the Bossie-behind- the-fence demo was ported to real hardware, and worked precisely as advertised. I don't think anyone ever got around to porting the sailboat program; the people who wrote it were immersed in more important things by the time real silicon showed up. You've seen the N64 controller, right? Well, the prototype M2 controller I saw looked very similar. However, it was built using prototype plastics. For those of you who have never seen the stuff before, it's this yellowish-white substance that isn't very pretty (it doesn't need to be; it's for prototypes). So here we are, looking at this yellowish-white thing with a long central component and two smaller roundish components at one end, and it was just completely impossible for us to keep a straight face when anyone grabbed hold of it... _-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_ Leo L. Schwab All public Opera demos were run on actual hardware. The original Opera machines were 13 boards of silicon, which were later compressed into 3 chips, but the "giant graphics engine" was the actual Opera hardware. Some of the very early very speculative PRIVATE Opera demos were mockups, but these were never represented as running on real hardware. They were in fact video tapes of our guesses as to what the hardware would eventually do. The approach to the M2 demos was another story altogether... -- "Stephen H. Landrum"

7:31 they say ''Let's see how gameplay looks like'' and they started to show a prerendered video for a first person shooter..It is funny how they wanted to attract people to buy that console when actually the graphics were worse than ps1......
@djlobb
@djlobb 5 лет назад
Worse? Dude, I don't know how you remember the PS1's graphics but they most certainly were not that detailed. Also the M2 was over twice as powerful as the PS1 hardware and saw a limited release as a Konami arcade board.

you are an idiot, m2 had two 64 bit processors, while ps 1 had 32 bit processor.
@idonteatcheetos
@idonteatcheetos 5 лет назад
George From Jungle The "64-bit" thing was just to build marketing hype. 64 bit vs 32 bit doesnt really mean anything by itself, what matters is the resulting performance. Even the N64, which *actually did* have a 64-bit processor, it was so costly to use at the time that most developers only utilized 32-bit application. Just saying a CPU is 64 bit doesnt mean it is always better as there are tons of other factors. The Sega Saturn also had 2 CPUs, which did nothing but make the hardware even more difficult to develop for. If youre not addressing 4GB or more of memory whats really the purpose of having 64 bits other than arbitrarilly speding up certain operations?

@@idonteatcheetos Dude, come on, you know that m2 was more powerful than Playstation, it never came out, but as a development kit it was much more powerful that anything at that time on the market.

These tech demos were awful. The stuff that looked like it was rendered on actual hardware was generic and extremely limited. I get that they were trying to highlight particular hardware effects but stuff like perspective-correct texturing or the lack thereof was easily visible in games back then. They could have shown actual gameplay and still pointed out the graphical differences to highlight those features. The dinosaur demo is pathetic. Why would you use such a generic asset when you could just program something from the ground up that would have looked so much better? And why put a dinosaur in there at all? It doesn't make any sense. Trip talks about the high framerate yet the animation is so slow, it makes the framerate FEEL low. And to compare that to Virtua Fighter? Ridiculous! All of the things mentioned so far make it seem like M2 development was practically non-existent at this point (which really brings into question whether a 1996 launch would have been realistically possible). However the biggest offender is the pre-rendered footage. Not only is it pre-rendered, but it's not even representative of a game that is actually in development! I mean it's one thing to show off recorded footage or even rendered footage of an actual game, but to show two things that aren't even planned games is just absurd! The whole thing just feels like a basic tech introduction for hardware that is nowhere near finalized and has nothing to show from a development aspect. In other words, the hardware is not ready to show if this is how little you have. I suppose that 3DO was rather desperate to hype M2 as a selling point of the existing console to try boost sales, although I don't think I'd want to have to spend another several hundred dollars so soon after spending $399+ on the original console. Having said all that, I really do wish that M2 had made it to market as planned, by 1996 at the latest and in the form of an add-on to the original console. It probably would have fared as poorly as most add-ons do, but it would have been really cool to at least have seen some games developed for it reach retail shelves and see how it could have compared to the big 3. Maybe if 3DO had been able to finalize their hardware more quickly, they could have gotten the original console out sooner, and had the M2 add-on ready in time as well. I think if their timing had worked out better, the console could have had a lot more success.

Bullshit. That's obviously pre-rendered. Real gameplay games seen like IMSA were not even as good as the best N64 games.
@Yuuretsu
@Yuuretsu 10 лет назад
True, but IMSA never even made it out of Beta. graphics on the N64 took 5 years to get as good as Conker's Bad Fur Day. On paper the M2 seemed to be the more powerfull system and it would have been interesting to see what developers could have gotten out of the M2 after 5 years of trying to push the hardware to its limits like Rare did with the N64.

Imsa definitely looks better than most everything on N64. I think it would have been more capable.

The M2 hardware was a good bit better than N64 and would have benefited from CD drives instead of cartridges. I owned a 3DO back then and it was an amazing console, I was playing games high end 32bit 3D games before PS1 or Saturn launched. It was very expensive at first because it used the same business model as PC's did which meant it was an open platform so anyone could make games for it without having to buy expensive license fees which meant games were cheaper to buy for 3DO. The other consoles were cheaper as Sony and Sega used a different business model where they sell the consoles at a loss to encourage fast adoption , then make the money back and then finally profits by charging third party developers expensive license fees before they are allowed to make a game for their consoles. That same business model still exists with consoles today. The 3DO started off really expensive but they soon got the pricing right, it's a shame that it didn't succeed but I am still very happy I was able to own one.

This video is interesting, but why does the cameraman have to talk like a douchebag the entire time? Saying that Road Rash on Genesis and 3DO are the same while the Genesis version can barely render a landscape and runs at about half the framerate with barely any frames of animation. This guy clearly had no idea what he's talking about

+RowJoe47 Nah, he was typical. Any platform has bullshit videos. hell, PlayStation lived off them for 15 years. You have to let a console get in the hands of devs. Of course the shit was prerendered, but everybody did that, including Sony. M2 would have been cool.

I think people at this point in time started to understand that companies use pre-rendered 3D to pass off wat the games "will probably might maybe" look like. even some marketing in some spaces of the gaming market trying to sell digitized pre rendered 3D as the actual thing. its deceptive and privy people know that so people are skeptical. Just as how people are not understanding "why is this guy so critical" is similar to me feeling "why are so many people blindly supporting this system that was never made". could've been a great console?? sure maybe. atleast better than the 3DO (its basically a step above cdi but a step below Saturn, with fluctuating place between it and the Jag)

Are you telling me that you believe all the footage that videogame companies sell you at e3? You're a believer in bull-shots? It's no wonder some people are still so naive and gullible. He's the smart one that can see through what is obviously marketing shots. It's the same shit all companies do at E3. I still remember the whole Motorstorm and Killzone thing when the PS3 came out.
