I Love my Sega Saturn so much. It's my favorite and most underrated console ever made but I cannot believe the extremely bad advertising for it. It's no wonder it flopped. :(
+Charlie Ward that same day at E3 they announced it for $399 then Sony came out and announced their PS1 at $299 lol (and Nintendo announced they'd delay their console by a year)
@@manuccu whit you im not even mad, i just feel sad that you missed out on some of the greatest games of that generation, Hope you change your mind and give It a try you wont be dissapointed if you dig into its amazing library 😊
I don't even dislike these ads, they're strange and quirky and nothing like video game marketing of today. That said, I'm not sure they would have convinced me to buy a Saturn over a Playstation.
***** what are you talking about "young sony pony". I was there when the Saturn was relevant, but we never got any Saturn TV ads in Australia, just print in magazines. I know damn well what happened. I would agree with your point that it was mostly Nintendo fans who didn't want to wait, but I'd also raise the fact that Sony was far better at getting their product out there and in the publics mind, Sega did go mental around the launch of Saturn and botched it pretty badly, in the west anyway.
+star SNES did not have a dominant control over the game market at that time. In the U.S. and Europe the Genesis outsold the SNES. Overall worldwide the SNES sold approximately 10million more units but Nintendo also supported the SNES for two years longer than the Genesis. During the years they directly competed against each other as the manufacturer's primarily supported console (1991-1994) the Genesis outsold the SNES.
not quite. The Mega Drive was strong in Europe, especially in England and France,. But Spain, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Italy were all Nintendo-Country after mid 1994, when Donkey Kong Country made its introduction, so it's not true that it was only due to Japan. All in all it was pretty much a draw in Europe.
Well, Sega officially dropped the support for the Mega Drive and Master System in late 1996. Vector Man 2 was one of the last big Sega titles released on the Mega Drive (release: November 1996), and the Master System actually still had a late Sonic release in the same year. Third parties supported the system until 1997. Still, it is true that Sega reduced efforts to support their 16 bit System once the Saturn got a grip in the western market, so I know what you mean.
If only Sega knew that those 8 processors would end up having developers not being able to process anything worth a damn outside of Japan. The Saturn was a cool console, and very much undermined in terms of power, as seen from Shenmue it could potentially outperform the N64 and PS1, it's just a shame that nobody knew how to utilize it, makes you wonder what would've panned out at this point in the industry if Sony hadn't bothered with the PS1.
I'd like to see the part where the speaker announces that Saturns are being sold at select retailers as he speaks, and the rebuttal during the PS1 announcement there the announcer says "$299".
Yessir. I've been pumped for it since it was first announced, I'm just baffled as to why it's taking so long. Maybe because it got cancelled for XBLA recently (oh I wonder why.. *rolls eyes*) but I was gonna get the PSN version anyway for nostalgia's sake. And thanks, I'm surprised you recognized it, in fact, someone pointed out my avatar on another video's comments just now lol. Hopefully Trilogy itself gets a remake someday.
By the time VF2 came out, Sega had finally figured out how to tap into those eight processors' full potential, lol. Seriously. It looked arcade perfect, miles ahead of VF1, and nothing on Playstation even came close to its fidelity which ran at 60fps to boot.
It was Sega's fault for limiting the amount of 2D games on the system (which it did very well) and pushing for more 3D games which, as you said, were extremely difficult to make because of the architecture.
I loved my saturn, Virtua Fighter Series, Virtua On, Virtual Racing, Shellshock, Shining Force, Guardian Heroes, House of the Dead, Nights, Virtua Cop, Sonic, Panzer Dragoon, DAY frickin' TONA! It was amazing that the images looked like that in my home! Thanks for the memories SEGA!!
the games were sooo bad compared to the ps1 versions I feel sorry for you having memories of such a bad console. By far the worst Sega ever did(not counting 32X and CD)
@@TheMattyPlant Dude, I love Sega. Owned a Genesis, GameGear, even Master System and the Dreamcast but honestly the Saturn was just a mess...they didn't even manage to release a real Sonic Game for it. I agree it had some amazing Arcade titles but it was just not enough to convince me and a lot of folks back in the days. Had to get a PSX and N64 instead and if I could travel back in time I'd buy these 2 systems again and leave the Saturn on the shelve.
It was also Sega's biggest commercial failure ever (32X and CD not counting) as it sold slightly more units than de Dreamcast but the Dc's lifespan was about 1/2 from the Saturn's. The Saturn debacle cost Sega a fortune and a lot of Fans turned their backs on Sega during that era and never came back. I believe it really laid the groundwork for Dreamcast's failure. I wish the Saturn would've been a success but it just never made it.
I remember this video, are thoughts were.....I'm buying a Playstation. At the time, I had a very close knit group of friends and we were all gamers and in high school. This video dropped (I can't remember who or even how we got it as the Internet was in its infancy) and we all hurried from wherever we were and all sat down to watch it. At that point, we knew things were not going to go over well for Sega. This video was so bad that I even questioned it's validity at the time. Did Sony release this stupid thing to confuse the masses (no...no they did not). The heads at Sega all sat around in a board room with their marketing team and said "green light, we have a massive hit on our hands." That speaks volumes as to how out of touch Sega was with its own fan base. The launch of the 32X, knowing full well that the Saturn was months away...Stupid. Not seeing the market falling in line for 3d games (go to any arcade in the west at the time and look at what everyone was playing, Virtua Fighter and Tekken)...Stupid. Waiting for the competition to showcase their hardware before revising your own...Stupid. Taking the company (US) from Tom Kalinsky and giving it to Burnie Stoller...Stupid. Releasing the console early and screwing over third party support and retailers, At a Higher Price Point...Stupid. Releasing a video of this, I don't even have words for this as you're main means of getting the games out in gamers hands...Stupid. Not allowing kiosks to show off the Saturn at major retailers like the other companies...Stupid. Allowing Bernie Stoller to speak for Sega giving him an open forum to let whatever vomit decides too fly out (like, the Saturn is not Sega's future all the while it's still financially viable)...Stupid. I can keep going, but those of us that grew up during that time saw the writing on the wall. Sony came into the market ready to fill the void that Sega apparently was preparing us for...As a Sega fan through and through, this made me very sad. I even purchased a Sega Saturn alongside my Playstation at the launch of Sony's console, hoping that we were wrong. I did the same for the Dreamcast and purchased it at launch (I loved that machine). Once the Playstation 2 was announced, I knew again that it was only a matter of time for Sega.
The entire conception of the Saturn was a disastrous 2D Hardware....I put a lot of blame on Sega Japan as they had absolutely no idea of what the hell they were doing. Trust me those ads were the least problem back then
This video is very much from the 90's; it's enjoyable for what it is and Sony made ads not so different from it. What truly did the Saturn in was the surprise launch which confused developers and retailers, and Sony provided the perfect rebuttal: "$299".
True fact Sega had the opportunity to ditch the Saturn hardware and buy the hardware that became n64. Sega of Japan declined Sega of America's request to do so. Imagine n64 with a disc drive. Then later they had the opportunity to collaborate with Sony 50/50 and declined. Again Sega of America's idea was shot down by Japan. Nintendo pissed everyone off by keeping carts (they charged a manufacturing fee to devs) thus they lost 3rd party to PS as PS was easier to developer for because Saturn's hardware, though powerful, was hard to utilize. This is why PS preformed so well. Also Microsoft decided to get into the game biz after developing Microsoft CE for dreamcast. Another true fact dreamcast broke the record for best launch in America upon its release. The potential was there just poor decision making by a company divided prevented it. Sadly majority of the brilliant minds that made Sega the success it was are long gone from the company or dead. Hope you find this information interesting.
I still have no idea of how SEGA could have been so stupid and hit their customers and dealers with a surprise release. Seriously? How could they have not known that they would alienate (A) Their customers who hadn't saved up the money yet? (B) Their dealers who weren't prepared to stock the new system? (C) Their programmers who weren't ready to make games yet? Need I go on?
Unfortunate marketing campaign/ads that didn't go over as Sega anticipated back in '95. They resumed the Sega scream the following year. What's more annoying is how they chose gameplay footage from the Model 1/Arcade version of VF, not the Saturn port that had been out since November 1994 in Japan. Sega was guilty of doing this early in the Genesis' life as well, for shame!
WE ARE NOW 24 YEARS INTO THE 21ST CENTURY WHAT WAS OLD IS NEW AGAIN AS HUMANITY CONTINUES FURTHER INTO THE INTERACTIVE AGE YOU'RE IN SO FAR THAT YOU DON'T EVEN REMEMBER WHERE YOU BEGAN! ...BUT ARE YOU STILL READY... FOR THE FUTURE?
This is why SEGA is now a 3rd party publisher. Not because of the SEGA Dreamcast, which is an awesome underrated system, not because of Nintendo, not because of SONY, not because of Atari & not because of the time period itself. SEGA Saturn basically killed SEGA as a 1st party publisher. SEGA Saturn is also the reason the SEGA Dreamcast only sold 12 million units. SEGA Saturn wasn't backwards compatible with SEGA Genesis, it had only one canonical Sonic game known as Sonic 3D Blast until SEGA's retcon in 1998/1999 with Sonic Adventure, The system made them look foolish and pushed away a majority of fans away from SEGA. If SEGA didn't release the SEGA Saturn or at least put more care and thought into the SEGA Saturn, then they wouldn't be a 3rd party publisher.
That's a bit of a stretch to speculate though. We similarly can't say if Microsoft would have even bothered entering the home console industry had it not been for Sony of all people having the unprecedented success they did at the time. Hell, even the Dreamcast itself was modeled upon the PS1's success and their desire to distance themselves from the Saturn's PR outside of Japan.
I know hindsight is 20/20, but how did this video ever seem like a good idea. "Lets get a genie and a slacker to dance around while we only show brief snippets of our games! Brilliant"
What are some of your fist day purchased games? When I purchased my Saturn, I also got Panzer Dragoon and Daytona. I wasn't planning on Panzer Dragoon ... All I wanted to do was play Dayton at home on my little bitch 14" tube tv hehe. But when I saw the game sitting right next to Daytona, I had to get it. It became my most fav. franchise ever.
You're incredibly naive if you think the lack of a competitor in the console industry would've had everyone flocking to PCs. Back then the console market thrived on marketing parlour tricks and proprietary hardware compared to widely available PC-esque architecture and internet access today. Why do you think it took this long for online to become commonplace in current generation consoles?
Agreed, as seen from games like Oddworld on the PS1, 2D games still had a very viable market. That said, it could've been more to do with the fact that there was nothing like the game than being 2D. Either way, it was ignorant on SOA's behalf.
Man, if I could buy you a drink... I'd be a pretty crafty logistics manager because transporting liquids isn't easy. But seriously man, my bro destroyed with noob saibot. Cyrex and Sheeva were my forte lol You seen the film? (yes most likely) Well here's some nostalgia for ya, recognise this from the ending from when Tsung gets owned? /watch?v=wy7VBtxzkAw
Hahah yeah they were really bad. Who knows, Sega might have had more success if they'd advertised it traditionally (ie just showed gameplay and promoted its great arcade ports)
This was one of two cds came with first saturn pack (vf1 and this cd). This video sucked so much un 1995.... the video shows a vf1 arcade nothing to do with domestic versión.
Atleast Sega's games were better than that shit marketing campaign. Baby Jesus what a train wreck. I had a Saturn back then and enjoyed the Sega goods, but yep their marketing was pissed away at stupid humor like this.
