3DR Solo with DJI Race Goggles and the GoPro 7 Black at 4K 60fps - Stabilization Test

This was a simple test to see if the stabilization on the GoPro 7 Black was able to compensate for flight and environmental characteristics (wind, recovery turbulence) when the GoPro was shooting in 4K at 60fps. The HyperSmooth option is not allowed when using 4K 60fps. Further stability can be had at FHD or lower resolution using GoPro’s HyperSmooth option. The wind ranged from 5-10mph throughout the day. The color is poor because I did not use Protune and subsequently color correct the footage, and it was a gloomy day.
The transmitter connects to the DJI race goggles just fine, but sadly the footage was too blury/fuzzy to provide the clarity I was looking for. When the GoPro was using stabilization the signal in the DJI goggles had ~1 second delay; there was no delay when stabilization was off.
For Flips and roles button A was set to Stabilize (for quick drone recovery) and button B was set to Acro. Sometimes the drone would flip when landing in GPS mode; use Stabilize mode to avoid this. Solex was used to upgrade the drone to Open Solo and program the buttons.

Wording from the slides in the video:
-------------------------------------------------------------
Purpose:
-Test GoPro 7 4K stabilization on the 3DR Solo
-Determine if the GoPro 7 will work for FPV
-Test out the DJI Race Goggles with the Solo
Results:
-GoPro 7 Black works with the 3DR Solo
-GoPro 7 4K 60fps stabilization works great
-GoPro stabilization causes a ~1 second delay
-DJI Race Goggles work with the Solo Tx
-Solo live stream is blurry on the DJI Goggles
Configuration:
-3DR Solo running Open Solo
-3DR Solo propellers, battery and fixed mount
-2x GoPro 7 Black running the latest firmware
4K 60fps, Wide, Auto Stabilization, Protune off
-Solex Android application
-DJI Race Goggles
3DR Solo using Open Solo:
-Significantly better than the stock software
-Transmitter still active after powering off
-Significant time required to connect TX & Solo
-GPS mode still flips on landing
-Loss of GPS lock causing flight mode change
GoPro 7 Black:
-Battery life is still short
-Camera still gets hot
-Issues with HDMI output
-Software & buttons completely lock up
-Android App flakes out and fails to connect
-Only basic stabilization at 4K 60fps
I am done using the 3DR Solo for aerial footage outside of tricks and tight shots where I may destroy a drone. Moving forward I will continue to use the 3DR Solo for flight training, demonstrations and R&D. I continually have to exercise patience with the 3DR Solo platform as I almost always want to smash it on the ground due to constant glitches and issues. Whoever is patient has great understanding, but one who is quick-tempered displays folly. Proverbs 14:29

waooo finally someone has done that of using the black gopro 7 for fpv, friend what transmitter did you use to send the signal to the monitor and if you did any configuration to the camera. I am interested since I have an F450 drone (armed drone) and I have an sj4000 for it

Hello, The GoPro was connected to the vehicle's original HDMI input and the video was steamed back to the original 3DR controller like it normally would. I was then able to see the video stream in the fpv goggles by connecting an HDMI cable to the 3DR solo controller HDMI output to the fpv goggle HDMI input. All of the streaming was done by the original 3dr solo, so in your situation you will need to find an HDMI transmitter/receiver pair to stream GoPro footage to your goggles.

Hey can u help..... I m not getting live stream on my phone with gopro hero 7 black in 3dr solo drone
@Duddyfunguy
@Duddyfunguy 4 года назад
Hello, try to pinpoint the issue through the following steps: 1- turn on your TV, plug the GoPro 4 in and then turn on the GoPro 4, you should see a live stream, if not then check the gopro settings. Repeat step 1 by plugging in the GoPro into the TV, turn on the GoPro and then turn on the TV... one of these combinations should stream video and depicts how to apply it to your 3DR. Step 2 - try another GoPro or generic camera on your 3DR to ensure video is streaming. Apply the methods of step 1 to your 3DR to see which combo allows the video to stream. If video is not streaming on the 3DR then there is an issue with the 3DR and or app/phone. Depending on steps 1 or 2 you may end up at step 3 - Introduce change - where you check and try the following: try another or different type of HDMI adapter cable, update GoPro 7 firmware, ensure the 3DR is updated using the 3DR Solo app, try using the app called Solex, switch phones to an android device, use Solex to install Open Solo. Something has to give within steps 1-3, I know it's not fun and takes forever but you should be able to find the issue using these methods. Let me know if you get it, and happy flying.

Great vid! How did you get your Hero 4 settings to display on your monitor! LOVE THAT. Seems so much easier to change settings etc.. Thanks!

Thank you. To be honest I can't remember how I displayed the GoPro 4 menu on a monitor. After plugging into the Monitor and going into the settings it just displayed for me. I'm not sure if there's hdmi-out changes that need to be made in order to do that. On the GoPro 7 I played with there are options for the HDMI out.

How did ya remove the side cover to allow the cable !? Did ya break it !? Or it can be remove and put it back !? Thanks
@Duddyfunguy
@Duddyfunguy 5 лет назад
The GoPro side cap snaps off if you apply pressure at an angle. It will not break, and it can be reattached.

For aerial footage, have you replaced the 3DR with another? Thank you for posting this video, I wrestle with a Solo as well and you taught me how to deal with some of its quirks.
@Duddyfunguy
@Duddyfunguy 5 лет назад
Thank you for the feedback. Yes, I have been using a Mavic Pro, which by itself is fine. I recently acquired the DJI race goggles and I think that's going to open up a whole new world of flight. The goggles allow for a more clear picture (sun block) when compared to my phone, and I've already noticed that I can fly closer to things with comfort. Although almost guaranteed the Drone will go up in the air and land without any issues, the platform isn't without some quirks... but more manageable than the 3DR Solo. My biggest complaint with the DJI platform is that there is always a software update unless you have a dedicated display screen that is not connected to any form of Internet; and these software updates keep you from flying in areas that you normally could with the 3DR Solo... if you catch my drift.

Just a question... Could a Gopro 3+ 4 work with the goggles?
@Duddyfunguy
@Duddyfunguy 4 года назад
Yes, a GoPro 3 or 4 will work. The 3DR Solo works best with a GoPro 3+ Black or GoPro 4 Black. You will use a HDMI cable to connect the 3DR Solo Transmitter to the DJI Goggles. The 3DR Solo transmitter provides the HDMI out video stream from the drone/GoPro and feeds it into the HDMI in port of the DJI Goggles.

Thanks so much for this. so if i simply connect a gopro 7 to a fixed cam mount i can still have fpv through my normal solo 3DR app and record like normal without the gimbal.?
@Duddyfunguy
@Duddyfunguy 5 лет назад
Yes, the GoPro 7 black provides a video stream that works with the stock 3dr solo app. The GoPro 7 black will need to be mounted upside down so the video on the 3dr solo application is right side up (looks correct). The 3dr solo app cannot control the GoPro 7 black; all recording functions will be performed manually by starting the camera while on the ground before take off, and stopping after it lands. The 3dr solo application does not have the ability to perform start/stop recording functions or modify resolution and capture settings of the GoPro 7 black. Thanks and have fun flying.

What video editor did you use? I've tried several and the 4k 60fps video from GoPro won't work
@Duddyfunguy
@Duddyfunguy 5 лет назад
Most, if not all, of my videos were spliced with CyberLink PowerDirector. I started with 13 Ultra and now I'm up to 16 Ultra. This video was put together with 16 Ultra. You can typically find the Ultra version around $50 or less on their website or through Slickdeals and Newegg around the holidays. I suggest staying away from the hacked versions... hope this helps.

@@Duddyfunguy ya I'm more of trying to figure out how your video came out so clear. Premiere pro keeps making my footage really grainy and then RU-vid compresses it more. Looks terrible
@Duddyfunguy
@Duddyfunguy 5 лет назад
Sorry to hear that. Approximately 8 years ago I demoed the different commercial off-the-shelf video rendering programs that were about $500 or less. At that time the winner for fastest rendering and clearest video on my i7 Windows box was CyberLink PowerDirector. Of course results may vary given the camcorder and hardware different users have, but I have yet to deviate from PowerDirector.
