It sucks that capturing on the 3DS is so tough because I'm sure there are a lot out there that just want to play a game on a big TV, even if it is a lower resolution blown up.
nintendo could make so much money if they release those models, if it works on regular systems, and streamers using them would give free publicity for games, but we know nintendo likes to be anti consumer on the business side of things so that will never happen

Maybe in the future someone will make a simple 3DS video output board thingy mod with digital sound and 720p over USB C hdmi cable so you can just hook that to your hd tv or 4k tv with zero lag or maybe some lag that you won't notice and some overclocking so tv or hdmi refresh rate will match
In theory, you can mod the 3ds, use snickerstream, then connect that from your PC to a TV. But that only works for 3ds games, not virtual console which is why I wish capture cards were cheaper :(

[Try4ce] I love it myself, but just acknowledge that most people seem to not care. I have to admit, it felt WEIRD playing Super Mario 3D Land without it while recording footage. Kirby Triple Deluxe uses it a lot too to play with enemies that are in or out of your plane, and it's tough to tell without 3D on.
I friggin love 3D. I'm starting to Stream my New 3DS (using Snickerstream and NTR firmware) and I have to look at the 3DS screen because looking at the viewer makes it feel strange.

Those hiccups on Citra are a thing found on all the newfangled emulators that have to deal with video chips that use pixel/vertex shaders, it's the so called "shader recompilation". The solution is generally to either play the game whole until the shader cache builds up completely or download a shader cache from someone that did it already.
It generally is for older systems, but the more kludges you do to emulate things more little annoying details sprout out. Let's just not talk about nintendo 64 emulation.
Yeah, Citra is going to have a great future Imo. It's already a great emulator, and a lot of games look amazing on it compared to the 3DS console it self. Hell, it's already a lot better than N64 and Saturn emulators, lol.
Oh holy shit... I had no idea Katsukity went out of business.... Now I'm pretty miffed. I bought a 3DS Capture in 2013 for X&Y. Finished my playthrough of Y - capture card lasted an entire year total before the USB stopped being detected. It was super expensive to ship back and have repaired and have shipped to me (though not as expensive as the $500 I paid for it originally) and I hadn't gotten around to it yet, and now it may never work again. Cool beans. And I really wanted to get in on their PSP/Vita/Switch mods, etc. Frustrating. I don't like the idea of my consoles not being capture-able. (If anyone knows how to fix it HMU.) A little ground loop isolator (or a Behringer HD400 hum destroyer on your 1/4 inch inputs to your mixer) cleans up the audio static. Great episode as always, I really hope a better option comes along. This experience had me salty enough to never even bother with the "new" 3DS since I, too, hate playing on the tiny screens.
I own two 3DS capture cards for my channel's content and let me tell you, they're expensive. Nintendo have always seemed to want to counter act footage recording of their handhelds. I'd have killed for a simple USB to HDMI/USB plug of sorts. To my knowledge, outside of custom firmware and installed capture boards by third party means, there is no way to record footage from the 3DS or DS. The GBA and GB however can be recorded via Elgato/Capture Card on the Gamecube Player. At Pokémon VGC events, there are devices that are USB to HDMI for the stream so it is possible however I don't think anyone has been able to replicate that. Sad. It certainly would have made content creation less expensive.
@@rat9625 every time I've seen just a headphone jack used for audio video it has always been pushed out via composite (the PSP is technically its own thing because of the extra little slot on it (non go models) next to the aux port) the best example of this I can think of would be the Xbox 360 E as it's analog output was via a aux port and only supported composite (no component and no VGA)
Don't fret. I'm currently reverse engineering the New3DS video output signals and am as this moment able to pull the digital signal with an arduino with some horizontal lines issues that I'm trying to work out. Once I figure that out I'll be working on a pcb that will be connected via a usb-c cable that will need a small hardware mod to tap the control and display signal. The custom board and microcontroller will be doing all of the leg work and then convert that signal to HDMI 1 and HDMI 2 (for 2 displays) if it only detects HDMI 1 then it will output both 3DS screens on a single display. I will post some links in week or so once I get the project on my website with an edit to this post since there is apparently enough interest for My Life in Gaming to make a video about it. ☺️
Figured out the line issues but working through trouble with scaling but will try to have that kink worked out this weekend. Currently working with some individuals regarding a micro controller. Will post a video sometime showing proof of concept and probably will need some community help at some point but great progress has been made. This project will most likely become open source after completion. My plan is to make DIY kits and pre-built systems for a little bit extra.
I'm interested in following this project as the "product key" inside the Katsukity circuit (it was embedded but clearly able to become overwritten) has for whatever reason disappeared, so I have a quite an expensive capture card I can't use and the NTR performance is unreliable despite having a good wireless setup.
Ohem1 There will need to be some hardware modifications for mine to operate. The charging circuit and display circuit is tapped into to provide digital out as well as charging via USB-C. From here a "dock" with SBC is used for display output and treats it as a displayport connection. I'm actually only able to output to two external screens at this time and working on programming the board for a single output and that's turning out to be challenging but not impossible. I also want to stress that this might sound expensive right now but this is just development phase and I'm hoping for the diy kit for it to be under ¥5500 or $50ish USD.
Never say never. Digital Foundry had someone make them a hardware modded Switch so they can capture portabler mode footage. So something similar for 3DS? I think it's a matter of when, not if as I think one day it will happen.
It's a real shame the Wii U didn't give us a docking ability for the 3ds, similar to previous consoles having like super gameboy or the gameboy player on the gamecube.

I was so hyped for the wii u some years ago, because i thought it was the perfet oportunity to finally get a super-gameboy type device again. Something to insert 3DS games on the wii u and play them that way. It was a match made in heaven, in my wildest dreams i even envisioned 3D tv compatibility. I didn't care if they pulled a similar move with the super game boy, and essentially put half the guts of the 3DS inside the device, forcing me to pay for a second 3DS just as an accesory to the wii u. And for a time i could swear that was their plan since the beginning, for what else do they forced a second screen into a home console. Is not like they got innovative ideas for games at the time lol. But nope... the wii u was a failure and any possibility for such a device disappeared. At least we got decent DS emulation... And yeah its probably the best way to experience DS games on the big screen.
I'm a little sad you didn't look at the CFW WiFi streaming in more depth. It's not terrible. It works best if your PC is connected via Ethernet cable to your router and not also over Wifi. With some tweaking you can get it working without any frame drops and the lag is manageable. For RPGs it's obviously a non-issue, and I've been able to play Ocarina of Time 3D without problems. As you said later in the video, playing with a couple frames of lag isn't as bad as some stuff we've experienced (like that crappy SCART to HDMI box, or some TVs with terrible internal scaling). But yeah, the image quality can look a little compressed. After you've setup the kitkat software (which recieves the video), you can capture that window with OBS, then set OBS to do a "fullscreen projector." That way you can play in fullscreen, with whichever sort of scaling options you'd like (done in OBS). It doesn't appear to add any more lag. Maybe it adds an additional millisecond or so, who knows? I can't measure it precisely, but I've recorded 60fps video of it with my phone and gone through the footage frame by frame, comparing the Kitkat window beside the OBS preview and they stay 100% synced up. This is also a way that ANYONE with ANY of the capture kits you talked about in this video can play their games in fullscreen. Actually, this goes for any capture card or any window in general. For instance, I stream a lot of old PC games this way. I play them in a tiny window in their native resolution, and do a fullscreen projector in OBS. The fun thing about this, is I see exactly what the viewers see. My webcam, my onscreen chat and notifications, etc. Another downside to this CFW capture method is that it doesn't work for DS games and most (all?) Virtual Console games. And getting it working with certain games (such as OoT 3D) requires going into the CFW's Rosalina Menu and toggling an option. Every time you boot the system. So, not ideal. Also, I don't have the capture CFW set as my main CFW, so every time I boot I have to enable the capture firmware first, then if I'm playing something like OoT 3D I have to go toggle that one setting as well. Kind of a headache. So I guess I can see why you didn't cover it in depth. Can't blame you. Still kind of wish you had, though. Great video anyhow!
[Try4ce] We just didn't want to go too crazy in depth on that stuff, the idea behind this video was more to take a quick overview of what exists/has been, and then focus in on what is the solution that I own/the one I think is most interesting. I don't have custom firmware on my New 3DS and am not interested in doing so at the moment, so that's why we got help from Duke!
Another downside to the NTR method is that NTR allows you to cheat in games, which means that a lot of speedrun leaderboards ban runs recorded with it.
You guys have such an amazing channel. You should have at least 10X the number of subscribers that you do. The quality of your videos is on point and you can hang with the “big boys” and quite frankly you can “leave them in the dust”. I’m pretty sure that anyone that takes the time to read this will agree with me too!

SQUEEZED JUCHE MH4U is the best MH game in my opinion. So much stuff to do. Put 500 hours into it. Unfortunately I really dislike Generations, if only they would port 4U or World to Switch
MH4U was for sure the peak of the old style MH, but I think we have a bright future ahead of us in the post-world era. Before world, mh had basically stayed the same game since mh1 on ps2

As a kid, it was always the highlight of my day getting a StreetPass tag with some random passerby. I really hope that if Nintendo keeps going with the solely handheld systems, I hope they bring back StreetPass or something similar to it.
[Try4ce] Heh, I actually love the Vita too, to be honest I've played it more than the 3DS in the past two years. It just happened to be dusty at the time I was setting up that shot, so I left it that way cause I thought it was funny. Plus it's a callback to an episode I did last year with an even dustier PSP.
The Vita was a mishandled mess. Sony really had no idea what they wanted with the handheld. The Vita is not a bad handheld but Sony just stopped caring the moment they released the handheld and went onto focusing solely on the PS3 of the time or shifted onto the PS4 early years. Basically started pulling support of the handheld really soon after the PS4 was launched. Even if they attempted to add "Features". They took away a lot more.
Spent a few months researching this stuff and really hoped you guys had some new development to share with the video. Obviously that’s not the case, but thanks for making the excellent video and sort of ‘spreading awareness’ of the current state of 3ds capture options. Really appreciate you guys’ work. @Eyecat15 The GameCube had expansion ports on the bottom, Wii U doesn't. I assume your idea would be to have an alternate dock for the Switch that includes a DS Player? I was only saying it would be better on Wii U since that console has two screens.
I was hoping for a '3DS Player' for Wii U, similar to the Gameboy Player on Gamecube. But that'll never happen unfortunately, at least not as a first-party solution.
@@DENPTrains The objective being portability? No, the 3DS would still exist for that function. Or if you mean stereoscopic content, the Wii U could technically support 3D TVs as well, but all 3DS games also play in 2D mode and would therefore still work with regular televisions. It would just be nice to play these games on a TV, potentially at higher resolutions than what the 3DS is capable of. The 3DS is a great handheld, but if I'm at home I'd like to be able to use my TV/surround sound setup since that would be more comfortable than using small screens. That transition between portable and home console is the whole appeal of the Switch, for instance.
@@catherineholmes8423 It's possible, a usb/usb-c 3ds card reader, although I highly doubt they'd let you copy the roms off of the card - I've never seen an instance where Nintendo has done this. Also the lack of a stylus would make many of 3DS/original DS games difficult to play.
Have you tried clip on ferrite rings/chokes for the audio hiss? Amazon has some for $10 and usually they fix my audio problems. I'd recommend one ring on every cable being used. Especially power. That's what those weird hard heavy cylinders are on the cables you sometimes see. They're big magnets that reduce high frequency noise in electronic circuits. Good for providing stable power and better quality audio.
Yeah, I’ve looked into getting one of these solutions for my own livestreams and the options are honestly depressing. Hardware solutions are expensive (and, apparently, about to become extinct), the software-based wireless capture is honestly really stanky (at least for me) and my current PC absolutely _loathes_ Citra. Really makes one appreciate the PSP, huh?
That noise from plugging in the capture card and using the analog audio output is likely a ground loop. EQ is really just a workaround, to really solve the problem you'll have to attack the actual source issue. First, make sure both your mixer and all power supplies (3DS, capture card, etc.) are all plugged into the same ground (same power strip) and see if that takes care of the problem. If there's still noise, get a ground lift adapter (or just break off the ground pin on your mixer's IEC cable; if you do that make sure you have another cable with the pin for general use). Almost 100% certain that will take care of your noise issues.
You are getting a ground loop due to adding wall power to the setup. For most people ‘Mpow Ground Loop Noise Isolator for Car Audio/Home Stereo System with 3.5mm Audio Cable’ type of 10 buck device will clean that enough for them.
I never understood the outcry from armchair analysts that Nintendo needs to kill the 3DS to "focus solely on the Switch", as if the reason we haven't gotten F-Zero or Star Fox on the Switch is because they chose to port Epic Yarn to the 3DS. Please.
[Try4ce] Right, that's more the point. It's more like, most people would prefer to play a 3DS game on the Switch instead of the 3DS at this point. But the 3DS is still important because of the games that are only on it.
I think it's mainly because of the age of the hardware. The 3ds uses 240p screens and very slow processors. 200mhz on old 3ds and 400 on new. Games can and have suffered because of these limitations. Take the recent port of the original Luigi's Mansion. It runs at a lower resolution than the original and can barely manage 30 fps. Even less with the new multiplayer mode. It would have been far better to bring it to the Switch where it would have been in HD and had more power to work with.
I think it was a poor idea to make ports that dont run too good on the 3DS instead of the Switch, but there is still plenty that you could do with the 3DS that the Switch cant for games and I would prefer both consoles to coexist as long as possible.
[Try4ce] Well, I'm still playing my NES, so it's retired, not dead. I always use present-tense terms when referring to vintage hardware, because it still exists.
I'm honestly sad the 3DS is leaving us, as it's one of my favorite systems Nintendo has made, and my DS/3DS library along with my News 2DS XL will stay with me till the day I die. I honestly believe I was the only person at my local GameStop to preorder a NEW 2DS XL for Launch day lol!
One note about Citra that I think is worth pointing out: Unless something has changed recently, Citra's high-resolution textures and models are not its own doing but actually something the 3DS does support and process. The reason it looks worse on the 3DS screen is not because Citra has more power, it's because the 3DS needs to downscale its images to display them on its tiny little screens.
- ꧁꧂ - tons of games either perform horribly or are unplayable on Citra. It’s disappointing how many videos are out there showing our favorite “DS games 60fps 4K!” But fail to mention that it reliably crashes after 3 minutes.

Are you sure you had JIT and hardware rendering enabled in Citra settings?? a stable 30fps should be achievable for most games on much less powerful hardware (I know, because I have played all the games you showed on Citra)
There's also the fact that they're using a Ryzen Threadripper. Most emulators only utilize one or two cores and perform much better with CPUs with fewer fast cores rather than one with tons of slower ones like the Threadrippers have.
@@ZombiesAteMyChannel On the 1600 AF (essentially a Ryzen 2600) with a 1050ti, the only game I have for it is running at a constant 30fps with no issue. That said, this is more than a year's worth of updates later, but I don't think it would have been an issue with a Ryzen 2600 and even just a 1660 a year ago.
Watching this video makes me feel a bit old. I was a child when I got my first Ds, went through it like everyone else, but now I wish I had the opportunity to have played more variety of ds/3ds games. I went through all Mario, Pokémon, Monster hunter, Kirby, SSmash and not much else. I've kept up with it but I can't really afford every big game from back then, but I'm catching up slowly but surely. Wish I had born like... Just 2 years earlier and I would have played more of this games and would have been totally different for me 😭❤️
I REALLY wish Nintendo made a 2DS player for Wii U. The Game Pad would be the bottom screen and the TV would be the top. Now they can't do this with Switch.
@@noobz4212 Well I'm pretty sure most did. It could also say on the box for the 2DS player that it's only compatible when using TV and GamePad mode. That would still be totally fine because at least we would have away to play 3DS and DS games on the TV without having to put both screens on the TV.

They should create an official 3DS emulator for Switch and add titles for purchase online. Or add it to one of the consoles (along with all their others) as the monthly subscription. They have such a huge library just waiting to be used and profited off.
I wonder if Original DS is within the limits of complexity that we could expect someone to make a MiSTer FPGA core for it? That would be one way to play on the TV.
If anyone has that audio desync issue as they describe at the end of the video, a "not frame perfect option but fairly close one" for the PC viewer is to take an aux cord from the headphone port of the 3ds and plug the other end into a mic or line in port on your computer. Then you open your list of playback devices on the computer, switch to the recording tab, and locate the mic device that is hearing your 3ds sound. To hear it yourself you need to right click the device, select properties, go to the listen tab, and check the "listen" checkbox. then set the name of your current default playback device in the picklist below the "listen" checkbox. This mic device can then be added into OBS individually as well as it's own volume bar This method should actually work with any device with a headphone port. However, some devices may give an annoying buzz or hum depending on how it was grounded. If you run into this you can but a Ground Loop Isolator off amazon for like fifteen bucks that will connect to the aux cord and remove that sound. (this may not work if your computer has a combined headphone and mic port, but as long as you have an aux cord it's free to at least try)
I still can't get over how they got away with releasing a 240p machine in 2011. It got the almost the same resolution as the friggin Genesis(400vs320 horizontal pixels is the difference). Which was released in 1988. (It does make for some pixel-perfect handheld emulation, though, which is what I use mine for the most anyway...)
I have to say, you seem so much more comfortable on camera now, Try. I'm glad to see you've loosened up a bit in videos. As for the noisy headphone jack, it sounds like an electrical interference issue. The Switch actually has the exact same issue. It's not noticeable when using headphones, but when I dock it and plug it into my powered speakers through a 3.5mm cable it's noisy as sin. Apparently to try and remedy it people have used Ground Loop Isolators to great effect. They can be had for pretty cheap on Amazon so I'd try that. Otherwise, it could be some sort of shielding issue causing EMI (Electro-Magnetic Interference) noise. Whether or not this is fixable I have absolutely no clue. I'd air on the negative side and say it's not fixable since it's probably a board design issue. Finally, it could just be Nintendo chooses to use shoddy DACs (Digital to Analog Converters) for their headphone jacks. The final option is entirely possible considering, to my knowledge, many consumer electronics manufacturers don't aim for enthusiast level sound and so use lower quality components. That one is almost definitely not fixable, though maybe someone knows of a work-around. My best recommendation is try the ground loop isolator and cross your fingers that it works. Best of luck. I did some digging a while back and it is apparently the case where Katsukitty was actually using a capture card called "Optimize" which is still available. I was pretty hyped to find this out since not only is Katsukitty out of business, but also because everyone I know who has had a Katsukitty installed unit has had quality control issues from poor soldering (which may also explain the audio interference as described in this video, though most of the examples I know of was from video cutting out sometimes even as little as a month of use.)
As someone who has owns all 3 of the major producers of the 3DS capture cards, and dealt with customer service from all 3, I will say that Loopy and Merki definitely have the best track record for me. Loopy's boards were well designed as I still have mine from 2014 and even got its USB port replaced recently which was great. As for Katsukitty my board only lasted about 6 months before needing repair, at which Katsukitty had gone out of business so I went to Merki who repaired it in a speedy and professional manner. Merki went as far as actually moving the board to a more stable position. I also purchased a Katsukitty board from Merki for the smaller New 3DS and it works fantastic although I have noticed some differences between Loopy's boards and Katsukitty's mainly with the USB cords being used. With Loopy I've had no issues with what type of micro-USB type B cable I've used for the system, but with Katsukitty they are very picky at which cable they use.
I remember getting head aches when the 3ds first came out. But I loved the 3d and after about 3 weeks the occasional headaches stopped. Not everybody did the 3d correctly but Nintendo and major 3rd parties did and it was great for the most part

I was definitely going to ask if your audio goes out of sync. I noticed it on mine within minutes. I contacted katsukity about the audio syncing issue and they kept pointing me toward what to do on the PC. I kept reiterating that I'm using the 3ds TV kit and not the viewer software. I even asked if a firmware update was in the works to fix it... then the silence began. But the audio syncing issue is the only downside that I have regarding the kit. If I can fix that some kinda way then I would start streaming my 3ds games. I don't want to sit in front of a pc and play my 3ds....feels kinda lame.
About the Citra emulator; it should be mentioned that various older versions might be better for specific games over the nightly build of Citra. With thousands of changes regularly happening to the code regressions for some games are bound to happen while other games might work better. So if one game does not work on the latest revision, then look around to see if an older version of Citra would work better.
Johnjs I have a 2ds and a new 3ds xl. I used to have the original 3ds but I made the mistake of giving it to my friend. I say mistake because I took care of that thing and they somehow broke the thumb stick. I kind of want to buy another one just like it for nostalgia reasons. Or try to convince them to get my old one back. Still works fine it just needs a new thumb stick and that won’t be hard for me lol. Also the fact that they are all like ya I don’t play it anymore and I still hardcore play my 3ds games.
I got my 3ds modded with the entire nes, snes, sega master, gb, gbc, gba, ds, and the more popular 3ds titles. Only cost around 300 for everything. It's portable and the mods allow me to save anywhere, custom button map, enable rapid fire, and even fast forward gameplay hold down button that makes the game flow 6 times faster roughly. I gotta say... It's the greatest fucking thing ever lololol. Now I will never get bored no matter where I go. Too many great games to play in great ways whenever the fuck I want.
Great video. The quality issues are certainly not ideal, but really the lack of availability right now is the true problem in my eyes. Pretty much all of the content I make is using 3DS hardware capture and if something were to happen to my system at this point, it feels like I'll be out of luck. Considering the fragility of these capture boards, that's not very farfetched either. It's a very nerve-racking time to be a 3DS content creator.
If only it could be as simple as buying a 3DS to HDMI adapter… I’d really love to just be able to connect to a TV so not only I can see the screen better, but I can share it with my family and stuff without all huddling in close together.
So that audio problem is a ground loop, Try. You can fix that with a $9 adapter on Amazon. I use the Mpow Ground Loop Noise Isolator, and it'll take care of your sound problem. As an added bonus, it also fixes the whine you get if you charge your phone while plugged into your car's aux port. :)

Excellent, educational content as always! I, too, would love to see what the future brings for DS/3DS video output solutions. As a collector with a focus on Nintendo handhelds, my stack of Game Boy and 3/DS hardware and software isn't going anywhere, so even though doors are closing now, new windows will open in the future. Modders are ravenous types, never really satisfied with what _is_ when these systems' true potential is only beginning to become apparent. Wild poke in the dark: The 3DS TV Kit's 30FPS lock in dual screen mode MIGHT be caused by the Raspberry Pi's USB performance, depending on the overhead on top of the raw image data and making many assumptions. My reasoning for this is that the Raspberry Pi effectively has one native USB 2.0 interface, combined with what's effectively a combined 4-Port USB hub and a USB Ethernet adapter on-board, so the combined maximum throughput cannot possibly exceed 420Mbps. Now, the bottom screen of the 3DS has a resolution of 320x240px, and the top screen has a resolution of 400x240px, but because of the 3DS' stereoscopic nature of the top screen (which the capture kit DOES evidently support, due to the option in the PC client) it effectively has to send the data for TWO top screens, so assuming a color depth of 24 bit (couldn't find any info on that online) you'd get just over 369Mbps [(h res * v res) * depth * fps)] , just with raw image data at a solid 60 frames per second. And that's without Audio, and without any potential overhead. Modern PCs, however, don't QUITE play up to USB2.0 spec like the Pi does, especially if your PC has USB 3.0, as they are fine with faster transfer speeds, so this would explain why it's not an issue on PC. But as I said: That's assuming that the image data gets sent to the Pi uncompressed, and always with the "full" top screen resolution of 800x240px. Otherwise it might be due to the relatively weak CPU of the Pi struggling with all that data.
[Try4ce] I didn't look close enough at the footage, but what I think is happening, is it's refreshing the screens on alternating frames. So on frame 1, the top screen gets refreshed, on frame 2, the bottom screen gets refreshed, and so on.
LOVE Citra. Currently my daily driver for 3DS. The guys at Citra do an awesome job. They're like the Dolphin emulator team but on the 3DS. But yeah, unfortunately as of right now not every game is perfect, but they'll get there eventually. When I played through Super Mario 3D Land I was able to run it at 4K @ 60fps no problem, but I'm currently playing Paper Mario Sticker Star and at native resolution it has trouble running at full speed.
