3F silnylon rain kilt (rain skirt) review. The 3F UL Rain Kilt (or rain skirt) is a cheap, budget ultralight piece of waterproof rain gear that'll help to keep you dry.
The 3F UL rain skirt is a cheaper alternative to more expensive options such as the ZPacks Cuben Fiber Rain Kilt and it’s just 1/3 the price of the ULA Rain Kilt which is made from silnylon just like the 3F UL Rain Kilt.
The 3F UL Gear Rain Kilt is made from a 15D silnylon just like the flysheet of the 3F UL Lanshan tent and claims to have a hydrostatic head rating of 5000mm. The 3F Rain Kilt comes factory seam sealed which ensures it is waterproof throughout. The rain skirt weighs in at just 68g (2.4oz), making it very lightweight and suitable for ultralight backpackers.
At just ~$9 for the 3F rain kilt (& ~$3 for delivery), it offers great value for money compared to its competitors as mentioned (ULA, ZPacks etc) and also compared to waterproof trousers (waterproof pants) which can cost much more than the 3F UL Rain Kilt.

I have one of these and really like it. I plan to take a sharpie and draw on areas where might show through so I can wear it while washing clothes on next through hike or just to go down a trail enjoying the fresh air. It really is light weight and I dont think the close to $50.00 cuban fiber one I have is much lighter or better.

Nice! I hike in a kilt so naturally I need a rain kilt! Breathablity is the biggest benefit I see here. People don't realize that fabrics like GoreTex only breath once the inside layer is wet with sweat!

Great review! I usually wear a skirt when hiking, so rain pants don't exactly work for me lol. This rain kilt looks like just what I need! 👍

Thank you! I don’t like rain trousers either, I end up wet from my sweat if I wear them, and rain kilts are the perfect solution for me

Thanks. Turn the opening of the skirt to you back and sit on it while biking. It's a skirt it blows or use som heavy stuff on it.
@RichardCheng
@RichardCheng 2 года назад
That sounds like a good idea, although I imagine the crossbar and movement of legs may expose your legs to the rain much more than while hiking

Wow you're really thorough! I love it, not many RU-vidrs are, and I think all my questions before the video have been tide over with all you've shown/said. Thanks sm for sharing!! I had wondered for a moment if it sticks much but my trousers do a little when wet so it's no loss there if at all lol... question though: when you bent over to immigrate movement in the rain, a gap was present in the split. So if one is hiking or climbing up somewhere steep, might this be bad for water ingress or too minor to matter much? :) Thanks bro

Hello, thank you so much for the kind feedback. I’ve learnt to rotate the kilt so the ‘opening slit’ is away from the direction of the prevailing rain. This means that even when going up steep terrain I’m kept pretty dry. Since the direction of the rain is also normally the direction of the wind it also stops the kilt being ‘pushed open’.
@clevelandexplorer2221

No problem, I subbed you because you're so thorough and unlike other so called lightweight folk on here. Nothing against them but the fact many RU-vidrs say they're light because they don't bring rubbish they'll never use if that makes sense. I'm not a grammoholic (lol) but I am gram conscious-im not ott so I'm not in a little tent hardly able to move but small and as light as comfortablu possible without too much compromises is great for me. Ah! So in theory there's no need in button snap things down the opening, it's all just so piss easy! :D I'm really not a waterproof trouser person but there are those odd occasions I think maybe I'd be better off. For 8 quid and whatever you said it weighs, I may as well! I'm sure the waist would also be tight enough so it won't pull down.

I’ve never had mine pull down either as long as I’ve fastened the waist up!

Have you used this in the rain yet? How long was the trek and how long was it raining for? Any feedback from real world use (compared to trousers)?
@RichardCheng
@RichardCheng 4 года назад
Hi Sang, I’ve been using it on all my trips for the past 3 years. It works great, although when it’s windy it’s a bit annoying flapping in the wind
@RichardCheng
@RichardCheng 4 года назад
Hi Shawn I think if anything the wind helps with the saturation. It does become slightly saturated, but not significant enough to bother me

I saw they are offering the Tyvek option, have you tried it? do you think it would have any better characteristic? thanks

I’ve not tried the Tyvek option, but I’m still using my silnylon one 2 years later

Nice review. Do you think it would be Ok for cycling?
@RichardCheng
@RichardCheng 6 лет назад
For bikes with the straight bar I would imagine it will be very annoying. I trust that the velcro will stick and there is enough room to move your legs up and down, but I think for cycling trousers are the better option

Many thanks for your prompt reply. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts about the rain kilt. It was very informative. All the best.

It is advertised for cycling, and for 10 buck I think it would be excellent for cycling.... And the ventilation would be ideal for many conditions as compared to the heat build up in trousers... Even with a straight bar it can be very advantageous at times.

Hello there, I asume by now you found a way, but for those that are interested. Now there is a updated version which also has a clip/buckle instead of velcro(i think) and there is a cord to keep it together which looks pretty nice. I will test it my self later. and do a review on my channel when I recieve it.

I had seen this sellers ads and knew they had a good price. Upon seeing this good review, I ordered it from AliExpress. They still had the best price. Their customer service is awful. It's looking like it's going to take 6 weeks to get it delivered. Don't be a cheapskate like me. Spend $5 more and order from someone reliable.
@grover173
@grover173 5 лет назад
It takes several weeks because it's coming directly from China via the slow route, and has to go through customs as well. If you want to pay more for instant delivery, use Amazon. If you want to save 10-12 bucks and aren't in a hurry, order from AliExpress.
@RichardCheng
@RichardCheng 5 лет назад
Be careful when ordering from Amazon as I've seen sellers ship from China anyway with a long estimated delivery date

A poncho already covers that area of the legs, so what possible use does this piece of crap have
@RichardCheng
@RichardCheng 6 лет назад
+Bernard Spielburg there are lots of non-poncho users, people that prefer a rain jacket to a poncho for many reasons
@doranselwyn8608

How about that I don't want that much coverage? How about that I want something easier to shed than a poncho? How about I don't find ponchos comfortable? How about I don't want my upper body sweating? Just because you can't think of a reason why someone would use a rain skirt doesn't mean the reasons don't exist. The people who pay much more than $10 for rain kilts from ULA and Zpacks obviously find them useful. Troll elsewhere.
@yakitoriPB
@yakitoriPB 6 лет назад
I don't like ponchos for several reasons. Size. Most don't cover entire arm. Flaps in the wind. I already have a rain jacket to begin with. Vs a poncho it has other uses. Mainly worn as a wind barrier or additional layer for warmth. When it's not really raining that hard, the jacket is better than a poncho as no real need to keep my synthetic bottoms super dry. I have the option of wearing one or the other...it's not a single piece of gear. That being said... finding multiple uses for one piece of gear help to reduce pack weight. I just use my polycryo groundsheet for a kilt

I like to hike along the coastline of the Baltic Sea. Try this with a poncho and you will blown away....
