This video is about 3M 2091 P100 vs 3M 2297 P100 filters. The filters are tested using a custom setup. We took a mannequin head and drilled three holes and placed plastic tubes through the head to measure air from different areas. One tube goes to the forehead. One hole goes to the mouth. One hole goes to the nose. The forehead and nose holes are used to sample air in different compartments. With this mask we only used the nose sampling tube. This air goes to a four part manifold which allows the air to be measured by the PCE particle counter. The mouth hole is connected to a tube which will allow us to eventually simulate breathing. We are still working on this part of the set up. The four sections manifold allows sampling of the ambient air and also to flush the manifold with filtered air using a ventilator filter for filtration. The PCE particle counter measures particles as small as 0.3 microns. A micron is 1/1000 of a millimeter.
The one downside to this mask is that the exhalation port is not filtered. If you are an asymptomatic carrier of COVID-19 you can spread the virus with this mask. There is also no voice diaphragm which makes talking somewhat difficult. The mask itself is quite comfortable and the seal is made of nice soft rubber like material.
Based on the measurements we made, this mask should work against COVID-19. Nonetheless, this mask was not designed for biologic particles and caution should be used when using this device for this purpose. Both filters worked well at 99.96% (2297) and 99.97% (2091) filtration.
One warning I wrote to 3M and they recommended against buying any filter that is branded or intended for foreign markets because they will not be able to authenticate the filter. They also only recommended buying directly from authorized distributors in US.
I quote: "3M recommends that customers in the United States avoid and refrain from purchasing 3M personal protective equipment from sources outside the United States, particularly from sources advertising on online marketplace platforms. We recommend purchasing through your normal 3M Authorized Distributor in the US."
They do have an email for COVID-19 fraud: covidfraud@mmm.com.

Great video, exactly what I was looking for. For someone that is exposed to both silica and welding fumes, I'll choose the 2091 for the former and 2297 for the latter. Thanks.

Thank you so much for your wonderful testing! This truly confirms that the easier breathing 2297 is just as effective as the 2091! God bless you! BTW, there are many fake 2091 on eBay and even Amazon. Those fake ones used to be less than $1 per pair before Covid. Surprisingly, when worn, subjectively, they seem to filter out smell. If one day you could compare fake 2091 (or 2097) with genuine one, that would be most enlightening.

Thank you for your videos. Do you suggest trying to cover a 3M half-mask elastomeric respirator exhalation valve port with a N95 or similar mask? How confident are you that the exhalation valve will not allow SARS-COV2 virions to be inhaled?
@RobertoMikiMD
@RobertoMikiMD 3 года назад
I think the exhalation valve should be covered by a mask if possible. The manufacturers do not recommend this but I have not experienced a problem doing so. I do not think you need to put a N95. A simple surgical mask should suffice. The exhalation should not allow the user of the mask to be exposed to the virus if the valve is working properly.

First please allow me to say THANK YOU! for the informative video. I had been wondering about the difference between the two filters, and 3M doesn't seem to say any difference. 3M's info made me wonder why there are two difference models/numbers. Your video really helped answer those questions. OK, based on the video and last comment there is no "real" difference between the pink (2091) AND the grey (2297) mask? You mention the 2297 is thinner, does it breath enough easier than other to really notice in use? You did say the 2297 (grey) has more order reduction.
@RobertoMikiMD
@RobertoMikiMD Год назад
I could not really feel and sense any difference when I have used them as far as ease of breathing. The odor decrease seems to be the only real difference.

Thanks in at work now demoing a 100year old home and I'm trying out the 2297 filters for the first time and they seem to be working just as good as the pinkys. With significantly better breathing. This is just my opinion I am not a professional on these filters.

Really helpful video. May I know how often should I change the filters?
@RobertoMikiMD
@RobertoMikiMD 3 года назад
Depending on what you are using it for. Potentially, they could last upto 6 months. Remembr, these filters are not protected against splashing with fluids like water or oil. If you are using in healthcare the outside will become contaminated and cannot be cleaned.
@snnisty
@snnisty 3 года назад
Thanks a lot for the info👍. I will be using these in hospital,so how often should I change the filters?
@RobertoMikiMD
@RobertoMikiMD 3 года назад
@@snnisty I would probably not use these filters in a hospital because the outside is not protected. When you take off the filters your hands will be contaminated. 3M also does not recommend use in a hospital because they have not been tested or approved for that use. That being said they should theoretically work. As far as contamination, you could try to protect them but it might make it harder to breath. One problem is that a stream of fluid like bleeding artery may go through the filter. For example the nonmedical N95s which were approved in the US for hospitals have to be protected with a surgical mask if you are going to use in the operating room becuase they will not stop a stream of blood. If you are going to use them, there will be an absolute expiration date on the package which is usually 5 years from the manufacture date. Interestingly, the packaging has the expiration and manufacture date but the filters only have the manufacture date. 3M states you can use them until the work of breathing becomes difficult. I would say with biologics in a hospital I would set a time limit although it would be relatively arbirtrary. I would say 6 months max for me and may be as short as 1 month. I would say if you are going onto a COVID floor or patient I would not use these because the outside cannot be decontaminated and you risk contracting the disease during donning and doffing. Obviously, if there is any gross contamination with blood or other fluids, or visible damage I would change it. The filter I would use is the 3M 7093: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pnVhIrNmpI4.html This filer can be decontaminated with wipes and is protected from the outside from gross contamination and fluids.

What is the difference between the 2296 and 2297?
@RobertoMikiMD
@RobertoMikiMD 2 года назад
Sorry it took me a while to get back to you but somehow I missed this comment. It looks like the main advantage of 2297 over 2296 is you can have exposure to nuisance level organic vapors but neither is good enough for true exposure to organic vapors. These details are from the 3M website. 2296 www.3m.com/3M/en_US/p/d/v000153255/ Protection Type Asbestos, Mold, Silica Purpose www.3m.com/3M/en_US/p/d/v000153255/ & Filters Recommended Application Arsenic, Asbestos, Brazing, Cadmium, Chemical Manufacturing, Manufacturing, MDA, Metal Pouring Including Exposure to Lead, Painting, Pesticide Application, Petrochemical, Powder Charging, Powder Coating, Pulp and Paper, Remediation, Sanding, Soil Preparation, Spray Coating, Torch Cutting, Welding, Wood Processing Recommended Industry Construction, Design & Construction, Facility Sanitation, Food Processing, Food Safety, General Manufacturing, Heavy Infrastructure, Industrial Maintenance, Marine, Metal Production & Fabrication, Mining, Oil & Gas, Transportation 2297 www.3m.com/3M/en_US/p/d/v000153256/ Product Type Filter Protection Type Asbestos, Mold, Organic Vapor, Silica Purpose Cartridges & Filters Recommended Application Arsenic, Asbestos, Assembly and Mechanical, Brazing, Cadmium, Chemical Manufacturing, Cleaning, Composite Finishing, Final Finish, Manufacturing, MDA, Metal Pouring Including Exposure to Lead, Paint Preparation, Painting, Pesticide Application, Petrochemical, Powder Charging, Powder Coating, Pulp and Paper, Remediation, Sanding, Soil Preparation, Spray Coating, Torch Cutting, Welding, Wood Processing Recommended Industry Construction, Design & Construction, Facility Sanitation, Food Processing, Food Safety, General Manufacturing, Heavy Industrial, Industrial Maintenance, Marine, Metal Production & Fabrication, Mining, Oil & Gas, Pharmaceutical, Transportation

Nuisance level refers to concentrations not exceeding OSHA PEL or other applicable government exposure limits, whichever is lower. Do not use for respiratory protection against organic vapours or in environments that are Immediately Dangerous to Life or Health (IDLH).
