Discussion about the virtues of the 3.4 V6 found in 4runners, T100, Tacomas and Tundras.
Here are some mods I had done to the 4runner that were worth while:
Tokico Trekmaster Shocks, good for basic ride if the 4runner is not lifted. 1999 tall springs will work with these shocks. Will ride poorly with 906 springs unless heavily loaded down:
Rears: amzn.to/1B2Zcch
Front: amzn.to/1E4Fhfr
Old Man Emu ARB rear 906 springs, would probably be best with OME shocks, but I have no experience:
amzn.to/1BpnDWn
Front Bilsteins designed for 2000 Tundra, on lowest setting. You would need a Tundra spring isolator and 4runner top plate to run this shock with Tundra TRD springs:
amzn.to/1FJ4TAU
Tundra spring isolator if you are using tundra TRD springs:
amzn.to/1EUY5BH
Rear Bilsteins, which need ¾ inch shock bushing and taller bump stops (from Sonoran Steel, for example) to run correctly. Not running bump stops can destroy the shocks:
amzn.to/1wXakg6
This should be the right bushing, but check before you install and please report back if this is incorrect so that I can make the change here:
amzn.to/1BprZg3
That’s if you want to piece together a system. You would still want a track bar from Sonoran, as well as bumpstops if you want to run bilsteins, which rode like a dream. Then the brake lines too.
Honestly, the best option, in my opinion, is to get the Sonoran Steel 7.2:
www.sonoranstee...
By far, the best tires to go under these 4runners (great MPG, traction, very light, great handling):
amzn.to/1D3nSbD
My first review of the tires:
• Hankook Dynapro ATM: B...
1st follow up:
• Hankook Dynapro ATM Be...
Long term follow up at 38k miles:
• Hankook Dynapro ATM lo...
I miss the 4runner!

I have almost the exact same one with 330k miles on it and its not letting up at all. It is really important though that when you go find a used one, make sure it has a ton of service history. The problem with these things is theyre so reliable that they get neglected. When you finally get your hands on it you're going to have to do all the maintenance they previous owner ignored.

so crazy how the early v6 the 3.0 that Toyota had in the early 90s trucks were terrible. Then they totally redeemed themselves with the 3.4! Excellent motor.

My uncle has a 1999 Toyota 4Runner 3.4l SR5. I have a 2000 Ford Explorer 5.0l XLT AWD. They are really close in size, features, ride, and durability. We both have tons of miles. I have over 310,000 miles on my Explorer. I think these are the two best SUV’s ever made. I wouldn’t say one is better than the other because each have positives and negatives compared to each other. Keeping fluids maintained, these SUV’s will run forever.

its a phenomenal motor, i have a built/ supercharged 2002 4runner pushing 8psi+ and it runs flawlessly at 223k miles. ive managed to get 20 mpg even with 33in tires and steel bumpers on the last road trip i went on. its truly a masterpiece of an engine

I got surprisingly good mileage as well. Didn't supercharge though. Very nice! I run the Hankook Dynapro ATM, except it's the house brand for discount tire. It's the Pathfinder AT, and you can get a passenger rated 285 70 17 that only weighs 43 lb. Usually you can't get a 33 under 50 lb. Several sets, never had a failure. That's what I run on my Sequoia now. Great tires! They didn't kill my mileage.

@@ThunderTravels oh cool that's good to know! I never really know what tires to run so I go with whatever the shop has to offer. Right now I'm running general grabber atx's for summer and studded/ siped cooper discoverer st maxx's in the winter. Both have served me pretty well

Thank you. I just bought a 2004 Tacoma with this engine. 142,000 miles. It had the belt, seals ans bearings done. The car runs from a cold start like a brand new engine should. I removed the oil cap and reached in with my finger to scrape the top of the head. Clean as new and oil looked new but had not been changed yet. It is a 4 wheel drive with a manual 5 speed. She shifts well and stays in gear but 1st, 2nd and 3rd sound a tiny bit whiny. I got a great deal and although 142,000 is a big number, with this engine I am learning that this motor may just be getting started in its life. What a fine running motor. Thanks for the great commentary and great information.
@jonsmith919

It’s a clearance motor. So if timing belt snapped on you. It will not cause damage to valve train . I still change every 100k

Best engine ever made as far as I'm concerned. Not the most powerful, but dead reliable, quiet and smooth. I only have 171k on my 04 Tacoma 4 door, and don't even worry about adding up miles driving because I know it'll last for YEARS to come!
@Justin562lbc
@Justin562lbc 7 лет назад
BTW people... if the timing belt let's go there will be no major damage as these engines are non interference engines.. meaning if a piston is top dead center, you can rotate the camshaft 360 degrees without it making contact to the piston. However you'll be stranded and need a tow. Cheers!

To my surprise she started up and ran like nothing had ever happened. I have since done a major service on it and continues to run like new, it has just turned over to 230000 miles.

I have a 2002 Tundra with this motor that I bought new at the end of '01. Only 108k miles on it. It just lost the alternator belt, so it's time to do some maintenance on it I reckon. Great motor, Great truck.
@ThunderTravels
@ThunderTravels 6 лет назад
Time for a timing belt change? They are due every 90,000-100,000 miles. If it hasn't been done, that belt is original, and could break, which would be bad news. These kits are what Toyota uses, so OEM. Not an easy install for non mechanic types, but I would take this kit to a mechanic: amzn.to/2tCO3Gl (Affiliate link) Keep the timing belt changed every 100,000 and the motor should last quite a while. At 108,000 it's barely broke in!

Just got a 1999 Toyota 4runner SR5 with 219000 miles, well a little over that. It runs so good with no issues so far, by the sounds of it few to come and just minor ones if they do. I know it was well taken care of. The dealer I bought it off is family owned and operated. It was the dealers daughters before I bought it, so I know he took care of it for her. Just got a oil change day before we switched title and tags. Before his daughter it had one other owner since new, that guy was a mechanic so I know again he took care of it. Just by looking at it and driving it you can tell. It does have a dent in the driver side fender, if I remember right someone backed into test driving another vehicle. Nothing major though, dealer offered to get the fender replaced but talked him into knocking more money off the sticker price. Yeah anyway I love my 4runner, great solid engine and truck in all. From a great trustworthy dealer owned and run by a nice family.

Two of the injectors started failing pretty close to each other, at around 150k. Injector cleaner didn't help but at that point they were already shot. I'll run it as preventative-maintenance in the future though, thanks for another tip!

Thanks for the great review on the 5VZ-FE motor. Have have owned my '97 4Runner with 169k miles since new and has pretty much always been my second vehicle, and outlasted a Honda, Porsche, BMW and now VW TDi. The motor has been rock solid and have it maintained either at the dealer when newer, mechanic, or myself. The only repairs I have done are replaced one fuel injector that was bad, clutch master cylinder, a O2 sensor on the passenger side, and the radiator cap. Original brakes and clutch until 164k miles when I installed new rotors and pads on the front while the original shoes on the rear still have over 30% left. I did the timing belt, water pump and camshaft seals at 93k miles, but that was more than 10 years ago so should probably consider replacing again due to age. Good point about the pully tensioners, mine are making a faint occasional squeak so it's probably time.

Just hit 200K today in my 02 4Runner, this thing is a best. i added a K&N cold air intake about 2K back, more high end torque but lost a lot in the low range. The intake also changed the sound profile when you hit 2500 RPM, i'm satisfied with the purchase; however, i would not buy it if i could do it again.
@ThunderTravels
@ThunderTravels 7 лет назад
My 2000 Tundra lost a lot of torque adding an aftermarket filter. Going back to stock helped a LOT. The "Deck Plate Mod" is pretty good for 4runners, using the stock box. Google it. Toyotas can be funny about performance upgrades, seems like forced induction is the only reliable power adder. Basic things like intake and exhaust aren't as good as they are on other brands. Of course there are always exceptions.

Should also change out the water pump when doing the timing belt. Not as pleased with my 3.4 liter engine as some folks. I had a big end bolt back off which led to my number one cylinders connecting rod blowing though the side of the block. Looked at used engines but they all had at least as many miles on them as the one I had. Ended up getting a short block from toyota, surfacing the heads and rebuilding the motor. Did the labor myself but would never do it again! Not much working room on the 4 wheel drive Tacoma's. Ended up costing about $6,000.00 in parts! Runs great now but kind of took some of the shine off the engine for me!

Even the best of the best have horror stories. Still sucks when it happens to you. Not that I mean to reflect on you in any way, but I just picked up a 2003 Sequoia and I had to sift through some very poorly maintained rigs that would probably let the next buyer down. One had 179k on a 2002, never had the timing belt done!! Said he was more of an "exterior guy". Couldn't get away fast enough.

Well, here's what happened. The car was in 9/10 condition at a decent price - $6400. These 3rd gen 4Runners are slow. Even with a V6, it felt very lethargic. I know you're gonna say ( in jest lol) "Well, it's not a BMW M3!" but I owned a 2002 Honda Passport ( Isuzu Rodeo ) and it had MUCH more balls than this thing had. Oh well. I'm looking at a 2005 Nissan Pathfinder tomorrow. A much more refined vehicle with more power. I like 3rd gen 4runners, but they are definitely showing their age and lack of sophistication at this point.

I don't care much for the 4th Gen 4runners, mainly because they are very cheap inside and the steering is WAY over-boosted and numb - even for a Toyota product.

Keep good clean and proper fluid in them. And shift properly. They can go a long haul. Mine is a bit whiny in 1st, 2nd and 3rd. I have read this is not a unique issue. But once I hit 4th and then 5th she runs like a clock. Go change your fluids asap if it has not been done in awhile. Frankly I wish AISIN made the manual trannys used in these.

I have TWO 4Runners SR5. I would much rather spend the money to completely rebuild and restore a third generation 4Runner that buy anything new. If you maintain these 4Runners they are good for 300,000 miles or more.

I drove trying to get decent mileage (not heavy on the throttle), and rarely got less than 16 MPG, usually 17-19, sometimes as high as 22 on long trips. That was with 265-75-16 Passenger rated Hankook Dynapro ATM (LT's will kill MPGs) Not amazing, not terrible.

Mine made it to 260k. Just ordered a jdm 3.4 5vzfe engine. Got it delivered to the mechanic shop. He calls. Says the oil pan is different and he's not sure if it'll work? Asked if there was a difference between the 2x4 and 4x4. What the heck does that have to do with the engine? Said the oil dipstick is in a different place so wouldn't they just be able to swap my engine's oil pan with the JDM 3.4 5VZFE I just bought? Then something about the exhaust would need changed!?!?! Like I'm freaking out. I dropped 2k on this JDM Engine from FLORIDA and live in OKLAHOMA. I am supposed to meet the mechanic at his shop at 8am in the morning and he's going to show me what he's talking about. I'm again freaking out. Does anyone know if all is good and he's just going to need to use my old engines oil pan and sump pump and he's over reacting.... or even clueless? What the ever loving shit have I gotten myself into. Help my fellow 3.4 yota people!!!!!!!!!

I highly recommend 5vzfe owners to change the radiator every 150000...They're are cheap enough. I bought a new denso for like $120 shipped to my house from amazon. Mine OEM burst at 188000 miles from a corrosion crack behind the fan shroud where it could'nt be seen and fried my engine. Once overheating: Pistons expanded enough to take up the Piston to bore clearance resulting in the rings lands of the pistons to deform and lock the rings flush with the diameter of the piston which caused no compression in two cylinders instantly.. p.i.t.a. This happened in less than 5 miles/8 minutes after getting gas to give you a idea on how quick the 5vzfe melts down. I let it cool down for a hour and attempted to refill the water and noticed the radiator leaking bad suggesting it had a huge crack. Oh once you loose compression in a cylinder. The engine rarely starts up(Toyota safe mode) leaving you stranded... In my case 150miles from home on a lone highway in the desert;with beer luckly and had get towed. Mine you my 4runner has been to Germany when the last owner was in the air force, then shipped it back to Washington where it stayed for a few years and now it's in California so some salting places up to recent and I do beat on my 4runner off roading whch may of been part of the reason it cracked in a unusual spot. Fix it myself though... Honed the block for stock replacement pistons,rings,bearings, serviced heads and now running as good as before. Durable like Ryan says and I totally agree it's super important to maintain the coolant system. I'm running a code scanner to view live data to keep tabs on the temp.. Like ryan mentioned the factory temp gauge I almost useless.. It never really moves from just slightly under half way though can be running at 192f or can be running at 214f. I heard there's a 175f thermostat for the 5vzfe which I'm considering upgrading to along with after market temp gauge possible a electric fan setup. James Palmer-These are engines not motors.

My radiator cracked at 320,000 miles, but it never overheated because it was small when I caught it. Not a bad suggestion.

deffinitly stout little engines. I actually had the engine on mine overheat on me going up a mountain road and the gauge went almost all the way to the red before I noticed it and pulled over. turned out to be an issue with the fan clutch but there was no engine damage due to the overheat it started right back up after letting it cool off and drove the rest of the way up the mountain and then the 130 mi back home without issue
