I had this procedure done by Optegra and it destroyed my life. I now have to live each day with chronic pain, debilitating dry eyes and terrible vision that cannot be corrected. I can no longer work, drive or leave the house for more than 30minutes without severe pain. Optegra said I was a good candidate but several other doctors have subsequently told me I should never have been operated on. I believe Optegra have only commercial motivations and no interest in patient welfare. Jessica Star committed suicide shortly after having SMILE - I can understand why.
If anyone is considering laser eye surgery, please, please think very carefully. The fact is laser eye surgery is extremely dangerous. I've had it done myself and it has ruined my life. Years on, my vision is the worst it has ever been and I am still in pain. In fact, most people who have told me they have had it done, have also had some kinds of problems, many of them serious and life-changing. Research seems to bear this out, suggesting that problems are the norm, rather than the exception. Companies providing such surgery have little or no scruples, withhold information about the dangers and pay their staff commissions. Surgeons who carry out the procedures should also not be trusted. The fact that they act in contravention of guidelines laid down by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists should tell you enough. If you are still tempted, make sure you seek advice from an independent optometrist or ophthalmologist who has nothing to gain from you having surgery. The industry is unregulated and that is a serious problem.
