Final moments of Melbourne radio station 3XY. It's transmitter was turned off at 1pm on September 23, 1991... ending 56 years of broadcasting.
It was the first time a capital city radio station had been removed from the airwaves.
Its new owners AWA Media Pty Ltd made the decision to close 3XY down so it could relocate studios from Geelong back to Melbourne and relaunch the station under a new name and call sign 3EE The Breeze 693. (later Magic 1278 which is now Talking Lifestyle).
After the final song played from the studio at Midday, a pre-recorded tape prepared by the Department of Communication went to air hosted by rock historian Glenn A. Baker.
