you've mounted the wheel reversely, it turns in the wrong direction. diamond blades, however it matters, should be installed the way they turn in the direction of the arrows on them.
@DereksWorkshopAndProjects
@DereksWorkshopAndProjects 3 года назад
I didn’t realize that. Thanks for point it out. With that being said, I have used it right side out, it made very little difference in the speed. Its very slow to cut thick material. I imagine it has more to do with blade life than cutting speed. Even if I’m wrong thanks for point it out.
@sajjadhemmati7779
@sajjadhemmati7779 3 года назад
@@DereksWorkshopAndProjects actually, far as related to science, the right side is less aggressive and should even decrease the cutting speed a bit! overall, though the idea is brilliant, thanks to such videos we know these diamond wheels are still slow. i'm not going to use them as of yet! sharing is caring. keep up sharing your experiences with the world! big thumbs up!

@@sajjadhemmati7779 if youre cutting thick steel, and only steel, use the abrasive discs. they work faster. try to cut concrete with the abrasive disc. anything else will destroy the disc. those diamond cut off wheels can cut just about anything you need with the same blade. it will even cut wood but thats not the right tool for that job lol. may start a fire and its slow. but if you had no choice you could use it and it would get the job done.

For anyone curious these work amazing on sheet metal. I used one on my jeep to cut rocker panels and 2x6 3/16 wall tubing. I did both sides with one disk and it was about 14 hours worth of cutting and welding.
@DereksWorkshopAndProjects
@DereksWorkshopAndProjects Год назад
It’s better for sheet metal than anything 1/8 inch and bigger.

Other than 100x+ more longevity, the other advantage of the diamond wheel is that there's almost zero chance it's going to explode and send shrapnel into your face and body when you eventually accidentally side-load it or encounter a manufacturer defect with the bonded abrasive disc. I have no problem investing 20 more seconds on a cut in exchange for that risk reduction.
@DereksWorkshopAndProjects
@DereksWorkshopAndProjects Год назад
I can definitely see that aspect of it. I’m sure I mentioned safety being an advantage of the diamond disc somewhere in the video. The thicker the steel, the more time it takes. I still like the abrasive discs better but to each his own.

At under $30 for a 50 pack of abrasive disks vs. $10 and more for a much slower single diamond disk I'll stay with the old school abrasives. Great comparison of the speeds. Thanks for posting.
@DereksWorkshopAndProjects

They work OK for some tasks, and decent on thinner material, but they are not worth switching to full time. Thanks for watching!
@DeuceGenius

ya if youre ONLY cutting steel with it use abrasive discs. they are worthless for cutting stone or concrete or ceramic or anything else. the diamond wheel will cut absolutely anything including steel.
@unionse7en
@unionse7en Год назад
a huge advantage for remote goes to the metal disc impregnated with diamond, if you drop your tool or accidently lever the disc in the cut it won't catastrophically break. Leaving you "stranded"

I scraped a 30 foot trailer from a mobile home using abrasive cut off wheels and figured I had plenty of time to kill. The opposite happened, saving me time. I used four 4 1/2 inch cut off wheels to do the job, cutting to ruffly 4 foot peaces. And not only that, I used the cheap harbor freight brand.

Man I was in the store today and had a Diamond blade in my hand, but I put it back on the shelf.... this was a timely video for me. I may just save for a plasma cutter and be done! Thanks . . .

There is still a place for any cut off wheel but in my personal opinion, you made a good choice putting it back! Plasma cutter is a good choice!

If you get in to serious metal work you are going to want/need all. I have a oxy-acet torch, plasma cutter, band saw, jig saw, chop saw, sawzall, grinder with diamond blades and abrasive blades, and if SHTF a classic hack saw. They all shine in their abilities. Hands down though, if I could only choose one, it would be an angle grinder with a hand full of abrasive blades. You can do 99% of everything with that. I actually have 3 angle grinders at the ready at all times just so I don't have to change the disks, one with a cut off disk, one with a sanding disk, and one with a grinding disk. The grinder with the sanding disk I alternate with the wire wheel.

Yeah the abrasive disk might be faster but the diamond rim disk won’t explode randomly and send shrapnel everywhere. I’ve seen what a cut off disk does to someone when it explodes and that person has to spend 3 hours in the ER getting fragments taken out of his thumb.
@CameronDC-Grimes
@CameronDC-Grimes 2 года назад
I'm betting it's worth buying both Diamond and Abrasive cutoff disks. So you have a very long life cutoff disk for emergencies and abrasives for times you need to work quickly. I can see myself not wanting to buy several disks before every job/task and liking having a disk that lasts 50+ uses.
@garygogo9048
@garygogo9048 Год назад
Buy both, if you do enough metal work then you have been to the point where you haven't been paying attention and you realize you are out of the abrasive disks at the wrong time. If you have the diamond blade around, then you don't have to stop in the middle of your project and drive to the store to get more to do a couple more cuts.

I keep the diamond blade for when I'm out of abrasives or basically for anything thin. It works great for sheet metal or if you just wanna cut one thing.

As you use an abrasive disc, it gets the abrasive grit everywhere! BIG MESS when compared to the diamond disc. That is a plus for the diamond disc. Factor in the amount of waste (headed to the landfill) of abrasive discs compared to the diamond disc. If a diamond disc lasts 100 times as long as the abrasive discs, you have a bucket of used abrasive discs to throw away and only one diamond disc. Can the abrasive discs be recycled in any way? Can the steel disc (with its diamond rim) be recycled?
@DereksWorkshopAndProjects
@DereksWorkshopAndProjects 3 года назад
Lots of good points. The diamond blades still throw metal around and has to be cleaned up, the same as if abrasive bits were mixed in too, so that one is definitely true and you make a good point, but I personally don't know that its that big of an issue. With that being said, it still is a bigger mess. Absolutely true on the landfill part. Diamond rimmed discs can be recycled I'm sure. It's... 98% steel? Probably I still personally prefer the abrasive discs but it definitely just comes down to personal preference. To each his own!

Another channel timed the cuts between the lenox diamond and an abrasive disk. And they were comparable in some aspects and then the abrasive disk did much better on thicker gauge material and tubing, and aluminum.

I think on really thin material I found the difference to be marginal but are the more thick material gets the worse the diamond blade did. Thanks for watching!

On the saftey front if someone is really concerned about fiber discs, I'd tell them to go buy a Bauer Poraband for $100. It doesn't shoot sparks off, it's way more tame and safe than an angle grinder and so far in using mine it cuts steel like butter.
@DereksWorkshopAndProjects
@DereksWorkshopAndProjects 3 года назад
I have one, I just rarely use it because I cannot cut straight with it for the life of me! And you’re right about the Portaband probably being the safest option for cutting steel. I’d really like to get a stationary band saw but no room / can’t justify the cost right now.
@Zombiereaper1
@Zombiereaper1 3 года назад
@@DereksWorkshopAndProjects there is a company that makes a frame for Portabands in general, it allows you to use it as both a horizontal bandsaw and a vertical bandsaw. However as I recall it costs around $300, my original plan when I got it was to build my own version of that stand, but haven't gotten around to it!

Yea the diamond disc is better for tile and rock. The Diablo reciprocating carbide blades cut metal like butter though. I don’t use cut off wheels much anymore. Less sparks and less mess in the shop with blades. Less heat being dispersed into the part being cut too. They need to add carbide chainsaw chain to their lineup lol

ah those abrasive discs are about the fastest and most efficient way to cut through thick steel. they work great. i use diamond cut off wheel for almost everything else. ceramic tile or drain pipe, masonry brick concrete etc. the diamond blades cut just about anything you need. love the versatility. have to have some good diamond cut off wheels. and i always keep some abrasive ones for steel only.

What i really use a angle grinder cut disc is cutting out rust, if i need to cut steel bar or tubing i will use a plasma cutter, the abrasive disc turnes into dust that is very bad for your lungs. The fact that it cuts a little slover does not really matter, because abrasive disc are much slover than a plasma cutter. So i say that diamond discs are the choice to make.
