Another great test. Please do a cutoff wheel comparison. I find there is a big difference. Also the. Metal cutting diamond cutoff for 4 1/2 “ grinders. Good job. On this video excellent testing procedure.

meanwhile companies hire """"companies"""" and "certified professionals" to do these kind of test rigs, and they overbuild them to get specific numbers under specific circumstances, the test becomes too sterile and the units are an absolute clean lab test scenario that customers will never obtain half of. :(

In my opinion the metal removal rate is king !!! Tool life and tool price also factor in but removal rate is direct related to cost ! Labor cost out on a job, doing a job in extreme cold or extreme hot outdoors ... with 20+ years of welding and fabrication background my priorities are 1) metal removal rate 2) surface finish As long as the tool life is not horrible it does not really matter how good it really is. And tool cost is very easily offset with labor savings ..... Just my point of view.

Project Farm i really and truly appreciate you taking the time to read all the comments !!!! I do that too snd my channel is MUCH smaller than yours so i can just barely imagine .... ANYWAYS i think that when the disc starts to wear the engagement surface of the disc increases. Theoretically if your grinder has enough wattage the material removal rate should increase as the test goes on. So lets say minutes 4-6 and 7-9 should have higher material removal rates as 1-3.... also when you do those tests you should always let the grinder cool back down to room temperature to eliminate that variable. No matter how weak or powerful your grinder is or how fast it turns for max speed - that “should not matter” because it was the same for all disks - BUT some disc might perform better than others at higher or lower speeds and with more or less pressure depending on “how aggressive” they cut. But truthfully that would be a whole another test all by itself and more a grinder test then a disc test.

i understand your point of view, but for the typical guy tryna do some projects in the garage labour rate isnt really a thing and alot of people make close to minimum wage where a welder charges himself out at 50-100$ an hour plus costs, i typically go with what i enjoy using the best vs cost, buy milwuakee tools cause i enjoy them more then the cheapos, i only use 11/12amp grinders not 10$ 5 amp HF ones because i wanna lean on them without the smoke flying, but i like to cheap out where possible especially in consumables

I could agree except for one thing. I really hate replacing wheels. I used some old harbor freight ones when I was fabricating some suspension components. I was going through a wheel every 5 minutes. That got old really fast.

@@franskamstra2728 YEAH ! I worked in a fab shop for 5 years...lots of carbon steel plate (1/4" up to 2") and plenty of stainless...Klingspor was used most all the time, not real aggressive, but long lasting and good price. also the belts and discs for sanding..!

Should've included a "value" calculation. For example, if a wheel is 1KG, and it lost 1g of material to remove 40g of material, that means 40000g of material it can remove total, divided by the money cost 10 dollars, equals 4000g/dollar, or 40g/cent value removal. It's more fun to grade consummables by amount of work they do per cent.

@@ProjectFarm Roderick brings up another good point that reminds me of an issue my brother-in-law ran into at 3M with Chinese contractors unimpressed with the performance of 3M flap wheels compared to their cheaper domestics. After all the testing they did between the 3M and cheap Chinese wheels to show the superior properties and costs of 3M's products while the contractors watched, it turned out the ultimate reason they were unhappy was because the disks would eventually explode on people all because the contractors would attempt to use the *entire* wheel beyond the recommended replacement diameter simply because there was still abrasive let where the cheaper domestics no longer did. It may not make a huge difference per wheel, but to someone who's buying 1000's of such consumables in a year, pennies add up to dollars pretty quick.

The test rigs you come up with are incredible… Theres no chance for any type of bias or data error which makes for incredible results. I have been watching your videos routinely for the last year now and always am impressed by every single one. I am still very curious as to how these results would compare if the wheels were very worn down. Cheaper cutting wheels tend to break off bits of the wheel as they wear down which can cause the grinder to throw itself which can be very dangerous. I would say even though it seems as though the $6 blade's performance was better in the competition, it would more be about safety of the blade. My assumption would be the $6 blade would be much stronger and safer to use than a cheap blade. Maybe next you could try doing a demo like this with cutoff wheels since they tend to be a bit more dangerous and quality seems to be a lot more important with those. Thanks for the great content!!

Well one could say testing a wheel for 3 minutes is not even close to the same as testing it for an hour or more like you are going to in the real world, the nortons dull very fast making them the worst out of all of them. But this is the only test he's done that I had any issues with!

These discs are meant to be worn out and replaced, and they're meant to grind. As far as I'm concerned, whatever has the best grind-to-dollar ratio is the best. None of them seemed to really wear out excessively fast. So from what I can tell, the Warrior or Avanti discs were the best in this test.

It is always a tradeoff. I used a lot of different makes of grind and cutoff wheels in the last 13 years. And there is a lot of difference between them. I had cutoff wheels that wore out so quick I only could cut 1 6inch pipe with it. And others I could do 10 with them. Also the balance on the grinding wheels is a big point for me. I don't like the 7mm wheels but the 4mm. My favorites for grinding is the pferd 4mm and for cutoff klingspor 1mm

Depends if you're tooling at home or a pro at work. Changing wheels takes time and money if your a pro. If your a home jobber it doesn't matter

@@mrturner69 Well let's compare the Warrior to the Norton then: The Warrior is 6x cheaper and removes 27% more material. If time=money, this alone is already putting the Warrior in a major lead. I'm not sure totally sure how the wheel loss percentage translates to the wheel's total lifespan, but for argument's sake, let's say the Warrior has half the lifespan of the Norton (in other words, it needs to be replaced twice as often). Now, let's say a seasoned pro takes about 1 full minute to replace a worn out wheel (assuming the new one is within reach). When ignoring time saved by the Warrior's faster cutting rate, it would take 4 Warrior wheels to become cost ineffective when compared to a Norton. But, considering how quickly it removes material, it'd be closer to 5 wheels. I don't know how many wheels the average pro would go through in a single day, but I'd be surprised if it was more than 3.

In theory a larger gap is more desirable but your ignition system has to be up to the challenge. The more pressure that present before combustion (high compression ratio and/or supercharging) tends to require a smaller gap or a more powerful ignition system to ensure the spark can jump the gap. You can also go overboard as the voltage will only build until it can jump the gap so if you spend money for a 80,000v coil but your engine only needs 20,000 volts to jump the gap you're wasting money. Also, the tighter the gap the less voltage the ignition system has to build up to jump the gap. If your ignition is marginal for the pressure and gap you're trying to arch it can lead to misfires.

Excellent job once again, might be ideal to buy 6 at 99 cents than 1 at $6 lol ... I got one for you, I was thinking about doing this, but I’m hoping you can. AA rechargeable battery test, for example, take few AA brands, big brands and Amazon brand and a cheap 1 or 2 brands. 3 tests I was thinking, a group to sit out fully charged for couple weeks and see which hold charge the best, another group into flashlights and see which last longest and a 3rd group under extreme test something that drains batteries fast like an RC car or straight connected to a motor with some resistance or a propeller etc, just few ideas, you are welcome to use my examples, I’ll do it next year if you don’t wanna haha

FixitNick, this has already been accomplished; years ago. Check out 'NLee the Engineer's' comments on Amazon, you'll find dozens upon DOZENS of his engineering, analytical breakdowns on this very specific subject. He's done such an excellent job, it likely cannot be done to the same degree as Project Farm does. Absolutely zero disrespect to Project Farm because I'm one of his most loyal RU-vid fans, I'm just saying that this test you're requesting has already been accomplished and you can see his results on Amazon. He literally is the GO TO aficionado for this subject on rechargables. Additionally, I know about this because I've been using Rechargeable batteries for years on RC Helicopters and always wanted the best rechargeable(s) per price I could get with proper recharging techniques. Check it out, it's amazing what details he's gone into already for your answers! Cheers!

It is useful to sometimes combine two tests into one numerical value to use as a metric to quantify the performance in both tests at once. For example, taking the amount of metal removed (in grams) and dividing it by the amount of material lost (in grams) will give you a unitless quantity / coefficient that describes the performance of both tests in one number. You can think of it as "the amount of metal it can remove, per unit loss in disk material." Doing this calculation gives the following coefficients. Warrior: 24 Dewalt: 38 Avanti: 17 Makita: 23.5 Diablo: 12.75 Norton: 35 Going by these numbers, the Dewalt clearly comes on top, and the Diablo is terrible in comparison. In other words, the Dewalt removed the most material with the least amount of loss, and the Diablo removed the least amount of material with the most amount of loss.

I don’t use grinding wheels or cut off’s very often. I bought the combo pack from harbor freight well over 2 years ago and have only used 2 cut off’s in that time. So for me the harbor freight work just fine.

Yep here is what the test results show. And yes I copy/pasted from my original post. Now put that quantity over the price per wheel and you will get: Harbor Freight Warrior: 24/$.99 Dewalt: 38 /$2.68 Avanti: 17 /$2.77 Makita: 23.5/$ 2.99 Diablo: 12.75 /$4.47 Norton: 35/$6.28 So the best grams removed, per grams lost, per dollar is: 1st place: Harbor Freight Warrior: 24.24 2nd place: Dewalt: 14.18 3rd place: Makita: 7.86 4th place: Avanti: 6.14 5th place: Norton: 5.57 6th place: Diablo: 2.85 As you can see, the warrior is by far the best and Dewalt is a reasonable choice if you dont like changing out wheels. On the other hand, the Diablo is by far and away the worst wheel. Don't buy this one. The others in the middle are ok but nowheres near as good as Dewalt or Harbor Freight Warrior. Goes to show that price isn't everything, sometimes the cheaper option is better.

Well Commander, I never cease to be amazed with all the different ways you come up with to test stuff! Just fakes me totally out! So THANKS for another unbiased test! NO problem whatsoever! I just use the DeWalt wheels because I can get them right down the road and I'm leery of cutoff wheels. I just grind till it burns through or score it good and let the hammer of choice do the finish work. I guess that's what I get for running equipment and being destructive. So THANKS again and BLESSINGS to yall. Raining and raw outside. Glad to be inside!

Snowing and very cold here in Missiouri. Gave the cows and calves a little extra hay in the shelters for bedding to stay warm with winter lows dipping into the mid-teens tonight.

@@ProjectFarm Ours is coming thursday according to the weather guys but they practise just like doctors. That's why I'm skittish of the cutoffs. I' don't like things whizzing around that I haven't meant to whiz. The grinders are bad enough and I never take a guard off. I was thinning the business end of a go-devil or Collins axe or splitting maul at the boulder hole with a 6-inch Milwaukee grinder and thinking that it would be a dandy rig to eat someone UP with. A while later one of the guys got a finger cut off with one. So we feel about the same about it. So stay warm! So far the heat pump is doing the deal BUT I know where a shed full of dry wood is, just in case! Thanks, Yall and GBWYall too!

I use cutoff wheels for 13 years now. Only 1 exploded on me because I was testing its limits. The 2.5mm wheels are never a problem. The 1mm wheels let you hear when they are done. They start "singing" when the elasticity is over

I would love to see a test on flame resistant shirts and non flame resistant shirts as I'm a welder and am currently healing from a severe burn accident due to a non fr shirt. Speed04GT it is by far the best disc i have ever used and i work in the metal Industry and have tried a lot of disc. The closest competitors i have found is a ceramaxx or a rhodius ceramicon disc.

@@ProjectFarm I did see more suggestions on what can be used instead of the Fix-a-Flat, Slime or Tireject. Other suggestions included shredded newspaper and antifreeze or windshield washer fluid, one claim that used antifreeze worked better, Bars Leak liquid aluminum radiator sealer and antifreeze, and even liquid starch. I'm not sure how you would test. Maybe get some old tires from a junk yard?

How long fixaflat or slime is another question. I've heard a tire repair place could refuse your business it's such an annoyance. I have not heard this of slime. In my use of slime in bicycles, it has trouble sealing at 100 psi of skinny tires but works ok for lower pressure tires. Check out road bike tire sealants. There are more options in the bike market. Also what size of holes are repairable with sealants. I like your videos and sometimes believe your tests could be more comprehensive. Good science is all about good tests.

@@CrashTestCoder I agree. Some brands of grind wheels once you get the new edge off of them the material removal rate goes way down. The good ones will continue to remove metal about the same rate all the way down until they need replaced. The bad ones work good for a few minutes than glaze over and become almost useless.

Excellent video thanks. I would like to see another grinding wheel showdown with more industrial wheels included not just Norton. In particular 3M Cubitron wheels which are amazing particularly on stainless. You can instantly feel how effortless and cool Cubitron wheels cut. A really fussy fabricator I know said they are the best wheels he's ever used in 30 years. Heat generated would also be an interesting measurement because that can affect cutting performance and is an indicator of grinding efficiency. Instead of rotating on one spot for 3 minutes it would be easy to make a rolling back and forth shuttle with a connecting rod and crank wheel to test over a larger surface area more reflective of actual use which would dissipate heat better.

I continue to enjoy your methodology and procedures and I like the latest addition of side-by-side footage. What I will say is that as the wheels become more worn, they may actually cut faster due to the surface being more in-line with the material (instead of a corner on a flat piece, it's two flat pieces meeting). This could cause any wheel that wears quickly to also cut faster proportionally. You might consider redoing this test and pre-wearing the disks so that the cutting surfaces meet more equally between the different brands. Also, I would be curious to know where the steel came from and maybe what kind of steel it is just to get a sense of how the wheels are doing, though it doesn't affect the end result as long as all the steel pieces are the same (which they appear to be).

3m cubitron ll and Norton blue fire/charger are the best in my experience we do heavy grinding at work huge back gouges with 9 inch wheels, although the better wheels are more expensive im able to save more energy and get the job done faster and have the peace of mind knowing i have the best of the best to help me! also softer wheels =more metal removal but shorter life. harder wheels are designed to last longer and will glaze fast

I second this, Norton wins in the abrasives dept. Also I rarely change wheels, instead I just have multiple grinders. 1 with a wire wheel, 1 with a cutoff, 1 with a hard disc, and one with an 80 grit sanding disc. Only time I change anything is if I'm heat shrinking sheet metal and I have to put the shrinking wheel on.

I just want to say another great video. I love how you did the testing in the video today. I love how you used a jig for the testing so you would not gamble of interfering with the results. The one thing that I would like to see done different in the video is when you did the weighting you did it in pounds as well. That is the only thing that I would of like to see done different other than that another good video and and great work, I know you put a lot of time and effort into these videos. I know you put money into the videos as well. I just wanted to let you know that I am now a patron for your channel. I am proud I am able to do that for you each month that i ma can. I just would like to give you another video idea, Lets test drill bits, what ones are better for drilling through steal. Warrior showed something that the Norton wheel was bad about... metal build up on the grit. Grinding has more aspects that material removal. Norton lasted longer, because of either a less friable grit or a harder bond, or both, than the Warrior. Ok, it lasted longer, but I’ll bet anything your work piece got considerable hotter because the grit did not fracture and expose fresh cutting edges. The Warrior probably did break down too quickly for what you ran against it, but the grit stayed clean and sharp the entire time and probably produced significantly less heat.

Showing the thickness vs the strength vs the durability vs the cost effectiveness of each grinding disc at just grinding on a particular metal is great! But for your average DIY'er (that would be me, lol) how would each of these 4.5" grinding disc do - say - on sharpening a lawn mower blade? As you'd want a grinding disc for this task that would sharpen a lawn mower blade effectively, but at the same time, not take very much material off of the lawn mower blade so that it would last getting sharpened many times before one would have to replace the blade (or 3 blades in my case, which I have on my 42" Zero-Turn Gravely) which the blades are now due for their very 1st sharpening. PS: And I wanted to THANK YOU very much, Project Farm" for you going to all the trouble to set-up this particular test! And I was thinking that the Diablo Disc might just come out on top in this instance, as did the Diablo Sawzall Blade in your other video ... but I was wrong! I might just send you a little surprise $$$$ for Christmas! Blessings!

For a blade sharpening you use a flap disc with like 80 or 120 grit.

I used to use the four and a half inch electric angle grinder quite often these days not very often at all... in the case of limited use I guess it's pretty hard to beat the Harbor Freight wheels for the cost although the do DeWalt seem to be a good value for performance versus cost

This is incredible. I have wondered so many times which brands are actually best. In my experience, a crappy wheel can make a job so much more frustrating and take way longer. I would LOVE to see this test replicated with cut off wheels and sanding flap discs. I have seen a massive difference in cutting speed between brands with those. For me, it seems like the Avanti is a great bet. Good material removal and price.

Awesome testing as always Todd, thank you. For me, as a DIY'er, it depends on what I'm doing as to which wheel I use. For knocking down a weld or cleaning rusty/dirty steel before welding, it's the Warrior wheel hands down for speed and cost effectiveness. But if I'm removing mill scale it's a DeWalt silicon carbide wheel. Aluminum oxide wheels (the most common type) just melt mill scale and move it around on the steel, where silicon carbide actually removes it. So I own 2 DeWalt silicon carbide wheels for mill scale and the others are all Warrior aluminum oxide wheels of varying grit for everything else. So far this combination has worked well for me. Thanks again for the excellent content, PF is the best. 👍

This was interesting. The problem really is that you need to use each one of these discs to completion to really determine the quality of their product. So a grinding disc starts out with a really square defined edge, and that edge digs into your work, and has a high rate of material removal, but a low control factor. Then as you develop the beveled edge you will have much more control over material removal, and you will be able to float or glide the cutting edge. This is where you can really get a feel for the quality of a grinding disc. A disc that cuts well new, but clogs and doesn't cut once you have a bevel, irrespective of how long it lasts is a crap disc. You really want a nice balanced wear that's not too fast, yet has excellent material removal capabilities throughout its life. I have personally used up a lot of those discs, and personally I would take a disc with excellent removal rates over long life. Removal rate really makes a disc desirable.

I think what I like most about your videos is that you explain what's happening before you jump right in. Then you're consistent with the testing. Maybe not good enough for a lab, but like AvE says "Good enough for the girls I go out with"
