I this installment I'll let you know what the engine modifications are needed to get the Chevy 4.3 V6 to work in the back of the Corvair. Cam shaft, timing set, pistons and seals are the big things in need of change in order to run the 4.3 in the reverse rotation needed to mate it with the Corvair drive line. Follow along as we go over details on this V6 powered Corvair build.

I was honestly hoping at this point there'd be kits to swap the 4.3 into the corvair first or second gen. I'm wanting to do basically the same thing with a '67.

I keep hearing that everyone has a problem tuning multi carb setups. They are no more difficult than a single carb setup. Easier than moms apple pie

The biggest problem with tuning multi car engines is trying to tune worn out multi carbs

I think a better swap would have been a 3800 superchared buick V6.
@Raycr
@Raycr 3 месяца назад
One issue might be if the parts are available to convert a 3800 to reverse rotation. The Corvair engine turns backwards to the conventional front mounted engine

Too bad the diff isn't similar to the old VW and would let you swap the ring gear around for reverse rotating engines.
@Raycr
@Raycr Год назад
That is true also we're running the powerglide automatic it wouldn't much care to run backwards
@ephjay6t87
@ephjay6t87 Год назад
In the old VW's you could simply flip the ring gear in the swing axle style transaxle.
@Raycr
@Raycr Год назад
I have heard of that on the VWs. Not an option with Corvairs or automatic transmissions

That has to be the Best Quote I've heard in at least a year......"The Last know 4.3 reverse flat tappet camshaft in the Free World" Man.....that is one for the ages......Sad really to think Old School cams have been deleted completely. I'm restoring a 225 dauntless engine (also used in boats back in the day),......hard to find parts , can't imagine trying to locate a reverse camshaft for it.

There's more to go into that conversation about the cam but I didn't want to get into it

@@johnsayles4316 just something a little more reliable than a 60 year old engine with wore out carbs mostly, wanted something that would go down the road without having to be tinkered with start every time and all you go

There should be no reason for the dual plane to have a problem but I question the need to change the piston's orientation. Use the reverse drive gear for the distributor. Nice custom touch adding the thrid rear light.
@Raycr
@Raycr 7 месяцев назад
With the gear to gear timing set, the cam actually turns opposite the crank, So the cam and disturber turn the same as a standard rotation engine. I learned a bunch building the 4.3 for reverse rotation

technically, the engine swap is a good idea but my fear is that added weight on the back of that light weight car will further impair an already very marginal handling..
@Raycr
@Raycr 6 месяцев назад
There will some weight redistribution by the time it's done. That and play with tire pressures. So far it handles well
@johnsayles4316
@johnsayles4316 Месяц назад
Anyone that thinks an Early Corvair should be driven in a way to risk accidents due to handling idiosyncrasies, should just get a true sports car, for sport driving, or just get Late Corvair. The later Corvairs had the handling more or less perfected.
@johnsayles4316
@johnsayles4316 Месяц назад
Someone just mentioned handling issues of the early Corvair. The designers of the Corvair wanted to put a front stabilizer bar on the car, but the accountants at GM nixed it, until the news called out the car. There are after market front stabilizer bars available for the early model Corvair. If you don't have one mounted on this car I'd like to suggest that you get one. It'll be safer that way.

Just an idea. Instead of hanging all that weight out past the rear axle. Take the engine and transmission from a Dodge Intrepid and put it in as a mid engined. Use the 3.5 for 225 hp in stock form. SOHC with 4 valve heads.
@MuShinnen
@MuShinnen 4 месяца назад
At that point you could put any engine in the car. You're deleting the back seats, and now you need to do even more work while having a hot, loud engine sitting a few inches behind you. I think they're trying to avoid that.
@mpetersen6
@mpetersen6 4 месяца назад
@@MuShinnen another option would be to put the drive train from a FWD car with a transverse engine. Better engine, better transmission etc.
