This is a video showing the location of the antifreeze drain plugs on the engine block of a 4.3L Chevy engine. This is on a 1998 Chevy Astro Van rear wheel drive.
If you drain all the coolant from the radiator and the lower radiator hose, how much coolant, if any, is left in the engine block? I ask because I drained all the old coolant from the rad and lower hose and then added new coolant to the radiator. But I am afraid to run the vehicle too long as I do t know if the block still has any coolant after I drained it from the lower radiator hose. Then filled up the radiator. Thanks. Any help would be great!
I know it's been 2 years since you did this video but I am training my 5.71 wondering if you know the torque spec on the engine block drain plugs ?? Please
A quick look online for 5.7l drain plugs on a Chevy showed 20 ft-lbs or 240 in-lbs. Though of course it would be good to double check that, I don’t know if all years are the same. Also, just because a torque spec is given, dry threads, dirty threads, lubed threads, Teflon covered threads all can affect how much you can torque a bolt/nut. So I always pay attention to my hands proprioception and if it feels like the bolt or nut might strip before I get to the proper torque reading, I stop and reevaluate.
Jake, that big hole right above the drain bolt plug is where the freeze plug should be. Notice that round silver dished metal on my engine in the video. that is one of the freeze plugs. It's a press fit, not threaded in. Thus they can pop out. If the coolant is old/weak or has been diluted to an incorrect ratio the coolant can freeze. The result is the freeze plug pops out and you lose coolant. Higher milage on an engine can cause freeze plugs to loosen up and leak or pop out. This is because the engine has gone through thousands of heat/cool cycles just from regular driving. IN either case, replace ALL of the freeze plugs. Hope this helps!
Lol< somehow my wife got her video subscriptions tied in with my channel, so when I replied it posted as her. Anyway, those are my comments in reply above, Walter.
And I also just found out somehow or other, there are now ads on my videos. I DO NOT DO ADS! I HATE them! And I will NOT subject my viewers to them if I can help it. SO I will try to shut down the ads on my videos, just need to figure out what happened, lol.
