• Carved with Love: The ... Carved with Love: The Genius of British Woodwork (2013) Episode 1/3 The Extraordinary Thomas Chippendale. How Chippendale was ruined by the aristocrats he created such wonderful furniture for.
I first became acquainted with Chippendale courtesy of World Book Encyclopedia when I was a little girl. However, my passion for his furniture really began after visiting Williamsburg, Virginia USA and in other pre-Revolutionary War homes along the Eastern Seaboard of the US. They are THE MOST BEAUTIFUL pieces of furniture period.
An exceptional documentary, the speaker at the end sums up Thomas Chippendale, the greatest that was, and that he will be known in 1,000 years, extraordinary designer and craftsman.
Noble pommies robed the master blind, then proceeded to (sic) "stroke" fruits of his labour enthusiastically. Even the statue is a lickspittle, another one is sad. Perfidious Albion. Charming.
I really appreciated what you've done with the BBC series - esp in the first episode - which I've used on the Wikipedia page entitled "The Chippendale Society". Thanks for uploading :)
I am so angry that wealthy men stiffed Chippendale and that he died in penury! I’m also upset that the powers that were didn’t bother to reinter his grave somewhere special. The toffs probably thought of him as “a hired hand unworthy of mention and serious consideration” just like many great composers (Bach and Mozart to name two examples) whose incredible vision, artistry and craftsmanship have lived long after the snobby toffs died and were forgotten. How unutterably sad.😞
Could the music for the American segment be any more obnoxious? Maybe that's why we hate American styles so much, and see them as hideously ugly. As children, we were conditioned to hate all those things, because we heard that HORRIBLE MUSIC, whenever the Colonial Period was discussed.
In the end for Chippendale he would not care about all this fuzz and praise 250 years later, when he struggled in his 60s being poor and penniless , to him this praise and tribute is meaningless, and MEAN because people made huge money of it while he died poor , Imagine that you were him, would this praise worth it when you have died poor and on credit! it seems that the guy did not pay the 3000 pounds left other wise the upper class will rush to say it...... it is smart to chose average clients, or little piece for big client.. no major work for such trashy class monger
