4 and 5 Axis CNC Controllers for CNC Foam Cutting

I quite often get asked if I use a particular controller board for CNC foam cutting So I thought it would be useful to make a video showing what you can use.
For CNC foam cutting you will need a minimum of 4 axes. 5 axes foam cutting is also possible with a rotary table
There are several to choose from and I have used most during my foam-cutting journey. A few will only work with specific software
So in this video, I’ll explain the different types of controllers which IMO are suitable for hobbyists.
Check the website for full details on CNC foam cutting plans and a free e-book.

really great video. I have another information from what you said in this video that might you miss. 1. arduino mega based (including mks board) can do 5 axis too. 27:43 2. the cheapest 32bit controller is ESP32 with NCFluid firmware, and it has wifi or bluetooth. 29:33 3. jedicut (skin property) and grblugru (wing creator on extras menu) has kerf setting (skin thickness) 33:25 hope it helps. cheers

Yes, I was aware of these points you make thanks. ESP32 does look good and a few guys have started using it with FluidNC which I may try soon. Although I have covered Jedicut I don't mention it anymore because it's not very intuitive and it's the software I've had the most questions about. Grblguru does look interesting but I haven't used it. Mainly because I have too many other projects. I like to give the watcher my own experience with hardware and software so that they can make the best decision. Many thanks for watching

Thanks for the detailed tutorial Can we use the mega and ramps with dev foam cnc for 5 axis work? And can dev foam cnc upload firmware to mega/ramps combo
@rckeith
@rckeith Год назад
Yes you can to both questions, have a look here at the list of supported controllers www.foamcuttingsoftware.com/eng/devcncfoam_f1.asp

Thanks Keith for your explanation, again very usefull and well done. You mention in the end of the video a guy in South Africa who made a automatic wire tensioning system, do you have any more info on this? I'd rather not use the "bow style" tensioner as it takes lots of space and I want to be able to dismount and compactly store the foamcutter when not in use.

I've contacted they guy in South Africa and asked for his permission to release the files he sent me. As soon as I get a reply I'll let you know.

Here's a link to the files he sent me. Which includes the hex file, Gerber files and some pictures. I don't know too much about it yet but will build one later this year.

Hello. Could you build 5 axes CNC foam cutting, pls?
@rckeith
@rckeith 5 месяцев назад
I don't need 5 axis machine or have the software to generate 5 axis g-code.

Hello Keith, for Arduino UNO with shield v3, what script should be used to control the 4 stepper motors? greetings
@rckeith
@rckeith 9 месяцев назад
You need to use DevCNC Foam from DevCad www.devcad.com/eng/devcncfoam.asp

@@rckeith OK thanks. But I mean, is it necessary to compile some modified RGBL on the Arduino Uno or is that already taken care of by the devcnc foam software?

@@rckeith great, all is included with DevCnc. Thanks a lot for your knowledges.

Are you going to do a 5 axis version?
@rckeith
@rckeith Год назад
I don't have a need for 5 axes. It's mainly for complex shapes. I can do all I need with 4.

@@rckeith Ahh, ok. I thought about cutting fuselages with a rotary 5 axis.
