There is a lot more to a quality bowl than it's shape. The best work starts with understanding a tree, how to process it with a chainsaw, how to balance the grain, harness warpage and control drying. In this nonlinear video we discuss 4 key topics of making quality bowl blanks.

My favorite parts of your videos is to say, "Can I make a profit from turning this item?" "Is my investment of time going to give me the desired result to charge what I need to make this sale?" If not, don't waste my time, toss that item and spend your time on one which will give you the desired result!!!! LOVE IT.

You might probe those cracks with those thin metal spark plug gap “feeler gauges” (?). - they are thin, flexible and long enough to measure crack depth Also woodcraft makes “green wood end sealer”, I coat the entire blank with it and never get any cracks Thanks again I’ll be donating! Great great teaching as always Patrick

I contacted the guy with the black walnut I told you about yesterday. I plan to meet up with him tomorrow, after work and load it on my trailer and bring it home sir. Oh and my oneway chuck came in the mail today, it looks pretty awesome, can't wait to try it out, Again, Thank you so much for your advice and I hope you have a blessed week. Dale

Another Great video ! Thank you ! I'm a long time lover of your video's. I have found using a spent coffee can (with plastic lid) is great way to use and store anchorseal. I have a cheapy brush that fits in the can, and I leave it in the can. Only put enough anchor seal in the can so that the brush isn't submerged much (about 1.5 inches deep). Then I have easy access to the brush and product. Works great. Of course, your system works too, only you wouldn't have to contend with the (plastic top) attached to your brushes.

Do you ever use glue in bowl cracks? I'm thinking not if your selling them due to the food safe issue. For personal use I have had some success, and some failure, using different types of glue in the cracks. Thanks again.

Glad I found your videos. I noticed on the one log you mentioned centering your circle to avoid the cracks coming in from end of log. Is it typically a good idea to cut logs longer than you plan to use and then use only the center section for making a bowl?
@wortheffort
@wortheffort Год назад
Leave logs as long as possible. Then cut and turn many blanks at once to reduce spoilage from cracks.
@jamieemes4292
@jamieemes4292 Год назад
@@wortheffort you're saying not just each individual piece as long as possible. But even leaving say a 6 ft piece of log intact and then cutting and turning them all at once. Is that correct?

came across your channel tonight, and been addicted to it... love the work you do, and how you really show it all in great detail... im fairly new to wood working and plan on getting a lathe soon :) taught me quite alot already. I will be honest on one thing though... You paint wood! should be illegal haha. its all about seeing the natural grains on what nature provides.. not covering it up with paint :P

You spent some time on cracks but did not mention filling them as you go with CA. Is there a problem using CA on cracks or is it always better to cut them out. I seem to use it a good bit. Great video. Very informative.

I don't fill cracks at this stage. It's a waste of time as the wood will move and separate from the plastic.

Aww man if you had just spent a few more seconds untying that knot on the plastic bag that was on the lathe then you could have used it again. Instead you ripped it off and now its just going to add to the plastic in the landfill. I love your videos and Im a long time subscriber but with all the plastic pollution I see in the world that really gets me :(

Rocket Creations there is such thing as recycling, you don't need to harp on him when you don't know where that bag ended up. That being said, I do agree too much (of everything) ends up in landfills unnecessarily.

DOES ANYONE KNOW IF THERE CAN BE TOO MUCH HEAT WHILE DRYING BOWLS? AND THANK YOU MUCH FOR SHARING YOUR TALENT AND TIME WITH US!!! TAKE CARE!!!
@wortheffort
@wortheffort 6 лет назад
Yes, you can dry bowls too fast which will cause cracking, You can make them too dry which changes cell structure. You can set them on fire (spontaneous combustion is not uncommon in overheated wood). You are just aiming for a high enough temp to evenly evaporate the wood, kill bugs and eggs and not cause too much warpage. Also... cap lock dude, cap lock.
