Here is a version of the first drum lesson I give to most all my new students. First, I show you the basics of drum set notation for the Hi Hat, Snare Drum, and Bass Drum. Then I go over your fist 4 grooves as a drummer along with the transcriptions.
Learning to read notation is a great skill to have and will save you time in your musical education. You DO NOT have to become a prolific sight reader ( being able to perform a piece of music or part you have never heard before with only the sheet music), but having at least a basic understanding gives you a skillset the access many free resources. There are so many transcriptions out there drummers have already done and books with countless exercises and drum solos. If you don't know how to read, it will take you a lot longer to benefit from these books and resources. In this video,. I give you a great starting point to help simplify musical notation.
