These are the best way's I've found to secure a portable outboard motor to your boat and stop thieves from stealing. Obviously if someone is determined enough, they will steal anything no matter what security devices are put in place. However, not having any security could easily allow someone to steal your engine who otherwise could have been deterred if security was in place. Hopefully this helps and can provide a little extra peace of mind knowing your outboard is a little safer.

hey buddy, at 5:19 if you look under where you are pointing there is two holes. use those holes and put a bolt through. I wouldnt recommend cutting those tabs off. I just purchased a new murc a few days ago and it came with a pair of nuts bolts and washers for that exact reason. I just bought one of those nuts and bolts where is has a locking nut which you need a key for to take the nut on and off. I also plan to put that bar on as well! Last thing i want is to come out and my motor is gone. sweet vids dude.

I have a 15hp and have had it stolen at least twice. The only thing that saved it from theft is that I bolted it to the transum cause they came at late night and turned the latches back and tried to lift it with no-avail, when I noticed it days later when they didnt turn them even back to the transum, then I added a bar lock thinking they would come back with a socket set to get bolts off and then later I chained the motor with a pad lock to one of the rear lift handles on the jon boat cause the outboard had a metel ring attached built to the side of it. Oh yeah and make sure you have a lock on the trailer hitch and chain a cinder block around the trailer as well so they dont drive it all off away and take pictures of the motor, boat, trailer and right down all serial #'s as well.

Good points. Like you said, it won't stop a determined thief, but it might make them consider stealing an easier one from someone else. I noticed you don't have the transom drilled for bolting thorough the transom. Would be good to do that to keep it from ever accidentally falling off & then you could also add the security lock nuts on the bolts. It would basically force them to steal the whole boat or cut the back of the boat off to steal the motor if they were that determined.

These outboards are really expensive and they hold there value a new 15hp motor goes for $2500 - $3500 new depending on brand and stats so the ones who steals knows the value and wants one but cant afford one.

What I did with my Honda 15hp years ago was to drill out the pins that hold the clamp handles, remove handles and then align the two flats horizontally. Order some stainless steel flat bar and bolt the flat bar from one clamp to the other using 1/4 inch nut and bolt with lock tight. I hope I explained that properly for the readers. Not perfect but still a deterrent. As well bolt the motor to the transom.

Late reply, but I use those tab lock bars AND rhe chain/cable through the grab handles when not in use. Only thing I don't like about the lock bar, it rattles/vibrates while under power.

thanks... I have a Carolina Skiff with no lip or ledge left on the transom. I got the lock, but I worry I can't clamp the tabbed bolts tight enough to prevent scraping it vertically off the no-lip transum. But The thru-bolts worry me, too, lol. Unless, as you say, special lock nuts or bolts. Do you think the stock clamps can clamp hard enough, squishing into the fiberglass, to prevent being shimmy-scraped vertically, still tight?

I live in Baton Rouge, La. My wife and I went to Saline Larto Complex this past weekend caught 5 bass and leaned a few things about the area and my Lil tracker. -Larto lake and the whole complex from, shad lake, saline lake, and lake Larto is 12 feet higher than it normal 30feet. It was our first time fishing there we traveled the entire arena without telling my wife, I was sporting fishing ground. I found some place without turbulent water we basically finished submerged campgrounds that creating a flat or homes. We used power bait black crawfish w/red specks, dang bass kept ripping off the artificial crawfish’s arms total of 10 artificial crawfish, we caught 5 with and our weight was 25pounds at the end of the day. -I also learned that my little boat motor(15feet tracker topper w/8hp Mercury motor ; 15-20hp is all i would have put on 190pound tracker15. No point in dropping more money into my bayou boat) is going to burn out if I keep using it the way I did this weekend, 56 miles, in one day. We’re getting a pro team 195/TXW w/150hp Mercury motor. I have a Carolina skiff with a 150hp Yamaha and it does 60mph with a experience boater. The tracker 195/TXW is a V-Hull with almost a flat back profile, so I’ll be able to get that boat up to 40mph3500rpm-60mph5800rpm. Or a 175/TF /w 75hp and it’ll do 25mph3500rpm-48mph 5800rps. We caught 5 and missed 10 fish couldn’t get all of them to bite, finicky bass! Sunday we went Sac-ua-lait fishing at 2 o’clock bayou and caught 30 only kept 10, it was so enjoyable. The freaking war-mouths kept hitting my plastic Zoom jerk bait white/shade gray top. Enjoyed the vide brother!

Most outboards have a spot on the bracket to tie a tether line -usually on both sides of the mounting bracket since they are mirror images You can padlock to that as well. It's a good idea to use a tether if you don't have the outboard bolted on because those clamp screws can and do sometimes back off and then that tether rope is the only thing keeping the motor from going to the bottom when if falls off into the drink. If you are taking the motor on and off a lot when the boat is on the water a longer tether to shore or your bigger boat adds security in case you fumble and drop the motor when mounting or dismounting it. Those tether holes are big enough to use one with a padlock and a cable to the boat. These can be broken but unlike the easily-replaced clamp handles breaking the transom bracket seriously devalues the resale value of the stolen motor and they are expensive to replace. Locking both the handles and the transom bracket may be enough to persuade the thieves to move on to an easier target. Usually thefts happen on land. A boat on a trailer is easier to steal if it doesn't have a hitch lock and a cable though a wheel to keep it from rolling. Theft on the water is more unlikely. We have had little theft issues as full-time boaters but sometimes when we leave our dinghy at a sketchy dock or beach for a long day exploring ashore we do worry a little. Having to swim back to our sailboat is even worse than needing to buy a new dinghy or outboard.

Great video. I'm new to outboard, just recently moved up from an MK Trolling motor to a small 2.5hp clamp on 4 stroke outboard. Do you transport your motor clamped on the boat? I've been taking mines off and on each time while trailering the boat. Too scared to leave it on.

9.9’s are thief bait in the state I live in due to not needing to tag or title them. Many on the used market will have no serial or id numbers on them. One that I got stole was bought new, had less than 100 hours on it. Was bolted, tab locked, and cable locked to the transom. Thieves jumped my back fence, unbolted, and cut my locks. Set over my back fence and walked 200 yards with it to the road, left quite a trail. My gas can was thrown on the neighbors shop roof, I’m assuming to get at a later time or date. Sadly, nothing is thief proof. I replaced the motor with a 4stroke 15 so it has to be tagged and isn’t like the 2 stroke 15’s that can be passed off as a 9.9 due to being an identical powerhead. Even still, I keep that heavy motor locked up in my house. It’s a pain.

Does the trimax product really keep the vibration down so the motor won’t come loose? I heard you mention it in the video and it’s been a year since the video. Just seeing how the products been holding up.
@FloBass
@FloBass 3 года назад
It held up fine while I used it, but now I have a different boat and an aftermarket power tilt unit on it which doesn't allow me to fit the trimax. I used it for about 9 months. It kept the thumb screws from turning due to the way they fit inside the lock. Without it, I would notice they would vibrate come about a half turn loose after a while and with the lock there's no way for them to move. Due to the boat being stored outside, I did have to service the key cylinder and lubricate it with some graphite and I sealed it with some marine grease to keep water from getting inside. But otherwise once its installed, there's little reason to remove it. I cannot stress enough that its just a deterrent for honest people. It can be defeated if someone is really out to steal your motor.

I thought you were going to show ways to secure the outboard to the transom so it doesn't fall off on the water. That trimax piece of junk only works if the thief does not have a screw driver and a brain. I had one of those lost my key. Looked at the end took a screw driver stuck it inside the end pulled up with very little force and the tab folded up and the thing fell off. Since have looked at several others differnt brands it the ends are folded over tabs and not welded ends the same thing happens. Scew driver and pop motor gone.

Three or four transoms ( I can't remember exactly ) with outboards still attached were chainsawed off from Good boats several miles from my hometown around ten or so years ago. I agree, if someone knows they're there and decides they want them, it'll be hard to stop them. A neighbour used to wrap his outboards up with lots of tarp then heavy duty chained the crap out of it, wrapped up so ugly and awkward with half a dozen locks too. Ha! we used to laugh at him doing so but in his younger days apparently he knew plenty of thieves and had been a bit of an opportunist himself so knew how they thought, he never had his outboards stolen and they sat on his boat out on the street. A Good greasy tarp is the best he said, same with locks and chain lol. His boats looked tatty so the assumption would have been the outboards were probably tatty too!

Our boat has a big transom eye on each side of the transom on the outside. I use them for my transom tie downs. I had a local hardware store cut and press clamps for an eye on each end of the cable. I run it around my 2007 Mercury Prokicker were it can't be removed. Then bring the two eyes to the transom eye and put a lock through them and the transom eye. Works good. This Mercury 9.9 does not have knobs to put one of those locks on. Just clamps to transom with a square end on each bolt. I told dealer to dig through floatation and put a bolt on each side through the transom but they didn't.

Padlock is always a good idea with metal tabs. The bracket you pointed at. Has two holes that you can drill through your transm and bolt that way. No reason to cut the bolt off the actual transm and the tabs and drill a new hole. That just defeats the damn purpose. You're doing more work. The concept is work harder not smarter.

How? Those screw looking things under the throttle bar secures the outboard to the boat. You can totallv get away with not needing to tighten those down. Until you hit a wave or two and that shit goes out the window. Because the only thing holding the outboard to the boat is the weight of the outboard itself. 😅 Tighten those screws to secure your outboard every time.
