How to set up 4 channel audio recording on the Sony FX3. I show each setting on the Sony FX3 Audio Handle for using 4 channel audio recording as well as which menu settings need to be changed.
I also show how to select each channel inside Final Cut Pro X along with some additional settings for audio monitoring and HDMI recording. The shot to camera was filmed using 4 channel audio recording on the Sony FX3 with my Sony 50mm f/1.2 GM lens.
Please note that the Splitter Cable shown in the video is not the correct cable to use for splitting mics, it needs to be a stereo to 2 x mono. I have linked to the correct type of cable below.

The 3.5mm splitter cable shown in the video isn't the right type, it needs to be stereo male to dual mono female and the one shown is stereo to dual stereo! I have updated the links in the description to the correct type of cable. geni.us/vd2JIm
@Superjeanmarc
@Superjeanmarc Год назад
Paul, doesn't it need to be the opposite? Meaning Stereo FEMALE to dual mono MALE? That would allow to connect the cable coming out of the dual receiver, into a female plug and split it into to male mono jacks that then connect to the 3,5mm to XLR adapters that fits into the FX3?

Hi there, sorry I missed your last message. You only have one stereo input on the handle so if you want to connect two audio devices via that single input you need the male to be a single stereo plug and the females to be 2 x mono inputs.

Just to contribute something else ... 2 things. The wireless Go 2 mounted on the Mic Shoe of the camera without the handle ... it puts noise in recording and is also heard in the headphones (at least in my FX3) ... as soon as you separate it from there it disappears ... And another thing, the audio inputs have limiters up to a certain level. At a wedding party, I record one channel (with a condenser mic) with automatic gain and in the other the same signal from the same mic but with the gain in manual at a low level in case it distorts ... good video !!! Thanks!

I’ve never had such a problem in the past but after such a long time being sick I did not touch my equipment for a year . Now I have to learn again . Plus I sold my fx3 bought a7IV and the fx30 and kind of feeling down with the fx30 unless I learn more on how to set it up tomorrow I am going up to Lake Mead at the border of Nevada and Arizona and will give it a test drive hope it works . Thanks man. It's a bummer that they don't have an option to do stereo recording with 1/2 with the option to reduce the gain for a safety channel. I wonder if they could include this with a firmware update?
@PaulJoy
@PaulJoy Год назад
The camera can do that with inputs 1 and 2, but theres no way to do it with inputs 3 & 4 in camera. Look at the Rode VideoMic NTG as that uses the 3.5mm input and does the safety channel in mic.
@AM2PMReviews

do you think it is better to do a convert my Rode wireless Go 2 into the XLR or just keep it on the 3.5. I think you said the XLR inputs are better so maybe is should just adapt it.

Hello Paul, Thank you for these great videos. Everything on my end works fine, except that I can't use the NTG3 because after about 5 minutes of recording, I get a loud interference or feedback sound that makes it impossible to continue my recording. I tried everything in the book and still can't figure it out. I decided to replace the NTG 3 with a battery-operated Shenhizer buy; as you know, the quality is not the same.

Thank you Paul for your videos on this subject. I am confused though because, when interviewing, I am always using a shotgun XLR mic (in Channel 1) + a Lavalier mic through the Wireless Go (in Channel 3). That way, I have a back up if the Lavalier has parasite noises. But it seems I have no option to listen to CH1 in my left ear and CH3 in my right ear ? Neither do I have the choice to send CH1 and CH3 to my external recorder ? How come ? (it seems like my set up is pretty basic)
@PaulJoy
@PaulJoy Год назад
That's correct, you can't have IN1/2 and IN3 in channels 1 and 2 or 3 & 4. The best solution to your problem would be to get a 3.5mm to XLR adapter and run that in to the second XLR input. That will give you both mics on channel 1 & 2 for headphone monitoring and HDMI output.

It's a shame the FX3 doesn't give you independent audio input control for the basic mic jack. Through a Deity shotgun mic I can actually send another input source in via the jack which is great. However the input level is locked to both channel 1 and 2 together, no seperate control.

Hi Steve. Yes if using 4 channel audio you’re stuck with the single level control for the 3.5mm input. One option you do have if only using two channels though is to split the 3.5mm stereo signal and send one channel to one of the XLR inputs via an adapter. @@PaulJoy handle set to on. Yes. Input was set to 1 trying to use the features of the handle connected the wire to xlr input. I’ll try it on 3 this evening and see. I need to be able to record 2 ppl kind of simultaneously but on individual channels so I figured this was a slam dunk. No luck yet 🤣. I’ll figure it out and a lot more now that I found your page!!! Will update later this evening

@@TooMuch_TV So if you're just using the Rode with two transmitters feeding input 3 then you need that switch set to IN 3 and you don't need 4 channel recording. If you're trying to use the rode at the same time as an XLR input (1 or 2) then you need to use 4 channel recording with the switch set to IN 1. See 2:00 in the video.

@@PaulJoydid exactly as video shows. Only shotgun records. Rode just humming sound. I see all 4 channels on camera but no audio from rode. Starting to think these are defective.

@@PaulJoyok. So I figured out the problem it’s the RODE ITSELF. I just plugged in my saromonic blink. Flawless instantly works. Damn. I’ll send the roses back!!!! Smh. Well good thing is I can get the newer pro version now. Instead of the go2 🤷🏽‍♂️
