4-cylinder BOXER motorcycles! 

In the 80s, in Brazil, a motorcycle company called Amazonas built and sold for the public a motorcycle with the engine and gearbox of the Volkwagem beetle boxer 4 cylinders 1600cc, denominated Amazonas 1600, and today still several of them in excellent state and running

Honda Gold Wing water cooled four cylinder boxer from about 1973-74 to about 1989-90 when 6 cylinder appeared. Wish a good light flat four would return.

Forgot the Amazonas 1600, the first Brazilian big bike.

In the mid 1970s as a kid I lived in an obscure Lancastrian village between Rochdale & Bacup that had old quarry & railway workings nearby. An unofficial, classic motorcycle meet had developed around the off-road scrambler bikes that raced the hill courses each summer. Among the BSAs, Nortons, Triumphs & Vincents there were JAP powered Brough Superiors & one guy rode up on a Brough Superior Golden Dream, parked it & walked away. There was also a seriously old one, British, with a 4 cylinder, in line engine that MAY have been the Brough Superior Austin Four, judging from the pictures I've seen of the Fish Tail exhaust (which I remember clearly). There was also at least one Ariel Square Four "Squariel" & truly ancient stuff that had carbide front lamps, that had to be pedaled to start & blew clouds of strange smelling oil (cooking oil?) when they ran. When I think back to how many extremely rare machines all in one place (I was too young to know HOW rare) I'm still amazed.

My Uncle had the doubtful honour to ride a KS 800 through the War and I remember him telling my Dad and me about it.

Manay years ago, at a motorcycle meeting in Val d'Isère, I remember seeing a motorcycle fitted with a flat four engine from a VW Beetle car...

In Brazil they have the Amazonas a bike whithe the a VW cox engine.

Great video JAWA TINO, I noticed the pistons had 4 rings, I had a BMW from 1955 which after 40 years and maybe 500,000 K miles replaced the piston rings and it had 5 rings, two of them oil scrapers, the new pistons they sent me only had the 3 regular rings. I still keep the old rings, although the motorcycle had to go.

Though the Honda is a nice bike for sure, I do love the sound of the Zündapp. Similar to a BMW, but much, much smoother! BTW in the old days the Zündapp was regarded the better one in comparison with the BMW. But the 1960‘s axed nearly all German motorcycle production, BMW only survived because of their car production. Other great companies ceased to exist.

In 1973-76 BMW were planning on developing the whole lineup of modern 4-6 cyl boxers to counter an invasion of Japanese superbikes. But then Honda suddenly blew all their plans off by offering their first GL and BMW boxer plans went the same drain Harley-Davidson Project Nova disappeared into. Eventually BMW achieved their goals in turning Peugeot car engine on its side and put it in their K series bikes.

I saw one of these on display not sure if it's for sale but it had a side car and I think it also had driveshaft to the third wheel.

Good think that there is a heat shield keeping the heat away from the riders feet from the rear cylinders! A rainy day would soak his boots and the heat would boil the water, cooking his toes! Bad news if your touring and away from home!

Those are the only side valve flat four engines I have ever seen . Could not find the carb on the zundapp. on the rear?

Hmmmm...and what about König?Twin stroke ,four cylinder,water -cooled racing engine in the end of sixties and begin of seventies capable to beat Yamahas and MV Agusta with Kim Newcombe mounted??

You can't trust Wikipedia for this one ;). You are missing (in no particular order) the Wooler 500, the Brough Superior Dream, the Brazilian-made Amazonas which was a production motorcycle that used the VW Beetle engine, and the French-made BFG which used a Citroen engine (in the 1990s I used to regularly see one that someone had imported into Canada).
