4 Days of Shooting for Comcast 

So a couple of suggestions from a 40 year veteran shooter, if you want them. Early is on time - on time is late. That is the one constant that I have had since I started in the 80's. When I get on location 30 minutes early, I am not stressed, I have time to mentally prep for the day's event. If I run into traffic, I will still be on time. You have a family, stress will kill you just as fast. Enough on that. B-roll is not always just nice gimbal or shoulder work. B-roll is a sequence, it's a story onto itself. Wide - establishing shot, medium, tight and extreme close ups. I do not see that as much in some of the corporate videos that I view or direct. What is the story? What shots do I need to tell that story. Wallpapering for an editor is a pain in the butt. Shoot me a bunch of sequences and I am a happy person. I can b-roll a poorly lit interview if I have the corresponding video. Twenty years ago, i worked for NBC as a news photog. I am now a DP/Editor at a large corporation. Better work/life balance than in network news.

Always back up the day of the shoot, on set. QC a clip or two that way if there’s an issue it can be discussed with those other team members or brought to the attention of the producer. It can save you uncomfortable calls if you bring this up late at night or next morning. My two cents.

These days, I’m practicing being content by not trying to get everything done. Sometimes we have an unhealthy perspective on time. As a fellow Christian, I have a book/audiobook recommendation - “Redeem Your Time” by Jordan Raynor.

Family first. Paying clients second. Anything else way later third. Pay your help before you pay yourself.

You should get a viewfinder. Easier to get exposure and balance.

It’s cool learning from others on the job and getting their perspective. I feel like when you understand multiple ways of approaching something, you can take what you like from each method and truly craft your own.

Really appreciate you being so real and talking about the struggles in the car. You are such a hard worker and someone I really look up to! I bet its so hard to deal with managing all those things and I appreciate you going through these things and documenting them allowing me (and others) to learn with you! Awesome vlog!
