Honestly, the truest thing on this video is save the white. I'm still learning to save the white and I'm starting to learn that the white is crucial. It's so difficult so I'm glad you mentioned trying to paint in a monochromatic style!

"fill the whole page up with colour" this is exactley what one of my art teachers told me back in school to do when we where trying out watercolours, and this is exactley the reson why I have not touched this medium since. He wasn't a good teacher I know thst now, I have been thinking about giving it a chance again. Thank you for a very informative and great video😁

All wise advice. I like how you stick to "artist" language...like value and hue. That's how artists talk and communicate specifics to each other. It's important to learn the language. Great video.

just purchased my first porcelain flower palette ;) thank you for sharing your knowledge and your lovely illustrations. I used to do just paintings but have been interested in illustration for a while now, and thinking about switching my works a bit, incorporating more of illustrative pieces so you sharing your opinions and experience in the field is very appreciated. Your chameleon illustrations is my favourite btw but they are all very sweet and beautifully rendered. Thank you once again and have a lovely day. Greetings from England :)

Taking a slightly different perspective, “Transparency in 2D design is simply the quality of being able to see through (or partially see through) one or more layers in an artwork. Like texture, transparency can be real or it can be implied or suggested. Opacity is a similar term but refers to the inability to see through a layer.” When I listened to the beginning of your presentation it seemed that you might be equating the value of light and dark colors with transparency. My thought is that you can have dark colors that are transparent or opaque and light colors that are transparent or opaque, unrelated to value. A light color such as say, Hansa Yellow, can be as opaque or transparent as say, Ultramarine Blue, and the transparency of a color may be impacted by the properties of the minerals that make up the color. Some colors simply are more transparent than others regardless of the water added, just as other colors are more granular. It is true that when you add water to a color, you can achieve a lighter value of that color. I just think it is good to remember that transparency is about the ability to see through a color, regardless of whether it is light or dark. Value does not, in my mind, equal transparency. Thanks for the opportunity to comment and happy painting!
@elcidbob
@elcidbob 4 года назад
In a way, you're being just as reductive. With watercolor, most everyone will be painting on a white substrate and the only time that thinning will result in a darker value is if you're painting over something that's already got a darker value, which quite often in this medium is a rare case. In a vacuum, yes, thinning only affects opacity and saturation. In practice, it affects saturation, value, and possibly hue because of how it interacts with other layers.

I too have been wanting to start a journal for quite some time and I had it all ready to go , yesterday was going to be THE DAY everything laid out to start and I was really looking forward to it BUT my husband became quite ill during Monday night and ended up in hospital . We were there all day yesterday , we came home in the evening so as you can imagine my journal is again on hold until he gets much better. I am his carer but sometimes things get worse for him and this was one of those times. He too is my everything and we have been together for 35 years and still feel the same. Hope you get enough LIKES you certainly deserve to and I would love to do this one, never too old to learn anything is my motto.

As someone who's currently switching from the student set I got when I first started back in April to Artist grade, I've learned that last step is especially true. I recently got a pack of Qors just for fun, and wow, the claims are at worst slightly overstated. They spread easily. I much prefer the brand I'm using now, though the Qors are also fun to use now and then. Step 1 also cannot be overstated. I work on that one a lot and only occasionally use the white paint I have (Generally just for tiny highlights). Still working on steps 2 and 3.

Watercolor Misfit you can clearly see your video making skills are on par with your watercolours, that's for sure! But seriously, thank YOU! your videos, along with other youtubers, are the main reason i just started studying art professionally now (i started a bachelor's last week). Im also trying watercolor more nowadays, im colourblind so normally stick to black and white sketches as i cant trust what colours i see, but your vids have given me the confidence to branch out and try watercolour, with all its colour and tonal nuances. I think practicing monochrome is an excellent tip from this vid that im gonna take away and work on! But just know that you do inspire a future generation of artists, and im basically proof of that, so you should be very proud :)

I'm not sure about the white paper. Preserving it. Doesn't that depend on what's being made? I love the dog, but a painting of nature or a landscape, wouldn't that be more of question about using less saturated tones than keeping a lot white? BTW. Looks amazing, and you've got many as a new subscriber, and I've smashed that bell so bad it'll never recover 😄😉
@venusbiggestfanx606

Line B she mean you have to learn the skill of using white. u dont have to do it always
@persona3444
@persona3444 6 лет назад
With landscapes/backgrounds, the "Preserving the White" tip doesn't apply. Unless the thing naturally has white- fill it in. It won't look "flat" if you shade correctly- in fact it will often look better with a faint wash colour then just flat plain white. However, to ensure the subject still "pops" out, use lighter/muted tones on the background and stronger tones on the characters. With portraits- keep the white. The negative space will really make the subject stand out and it's also less work ;)
@SandiLansing
@SandiLansing 4 года назад
Even landscapes, or maybe even especially, landscapes are better with lights and darks. Contrast is one of the most fundamental elements in art and white paper is half of the game in watercolor. Even a foggy day at the beach will be improved by leaving some white paper.

Landscapes especially need it. When I first started watercolor, my landscapes looked flat. But then I started to preserve the white of snow on trees (or ground), the lining atop the clouds, the light reflected on water, the foam of the sea, or the center of the sun, etc. so that it has its brightest part in the middle with a halo of yellows & oranges. I can't tell you how often I tried using yellow to make my sun bright & it still looked artificial. But even if you're concerned it would be too bright, I sometimes would go in and mute it just a bit with a thin wash of color. Like for instance, sea foam isn't all completely white, it has partial reflections of color from the sand and sky. So after removing the masking fluid, I would add in a bit of my mixtures from my palette that I used to color the beach & ocean into some parts of the sea foam, while leaving other parts white. This helped it look more 3-dimensional. Clouds only need part of their shape left white to really pop. The same goes for snow and the sun. Lightning also looks more striking (ha! I did a pun) as white, but I would etch the paint off the paper to get that effect rather than try to preserve it. Oh and even if you plan on painting everything without white, it's still easier to preserve them. For ex. when using masking fluid to cover shapes like a boat in the water, white birds in the sky, trees basking in rays of a sunlit forest, mountains in your background, etc. The reason being is that it'll allow you the ease of laying an entire wash all over your paper without the hassle of trying to paint around each shape. After preserving those whites, you can then remove the mask & color in your reserved shapes with your consecutive layers. Preserving those whites can make painting subjects (or irregular mid/foreground) alot less of a hassle.
