I think one of the best ways to predict the next shot from your opponent is to know them and know their style e.g. my friends can’t hit a deep backhand full court so I would move my base further up the court

Yes it's about working out these patterns a lot of the time!!

Great set of tips! I have been trying to analyze the badminton game, using the logic of parabola. One seem to have an upper hand, when you could hit-back the birdie during its upward slope, and forced to stay defensive, when you could touch the birdie, only during its downward slope. For eg. when you hit the smash not at its peak, but during its downward slope, it is less effective and stays flat. Also ensuring the opponent only hits the birdie in its downward slope seems to give you an upper-hand. Is that a no-brainer? or anything interesting you could suggest?

the coin catch seems to require a more natural rhythm than the hardware/app-based stuff. it does look like you need a bigger board or tray to place the coins on and keep them farther apart. the blind ball toss is another good one. good exercises and ideas, especially the point about developing reading skills

this is something i needed right now. and it's important, when i play doubles and the receiver just lunges forward and taps the shuttle at my face, killing it. I watched your backhand serve video as well, and I'm still practicing it. But if I could just react fast enough to smash the shuttle back at him...on his face, to be precise! As always, awesome video!
@BadmintonInsight
@BadmintonInsight 2 года назад
Ah that's great to hear! Haha keep it up - thanks a lot!
@myclamish
@myclamish 2 года назад
I mean I also want to remind you in doubles its not your job to return every shot. Being able to react to a tap kill from basically at the net while you're standing at the service T is pretty hard. And putting any kind of force into your return is even harder because you need to room to swing, even if it's just using finger power. And even if you manage to get your racquet behind it, you have to control the return to not give them another kill. And if they're tapping it down towards you, you're definitely going to be hitting it back up, so good luck hitting their body. Better to get out of the way and leave it to your partner who has a bit more time to react... or better yet work on masking flick and drive serves so the receiver has to take a moment to think whether to lunge forward or not (or make sure your low serve isn't slow and floaty).
@MrinalSingh904
@MrinalSingh904 2 года назад
@@myclamish this is a very good point. I agree it's very difficult to return the shot from the opponent while I'm still standing at the service T. I will try perfecting the drive serve and also getting out of the way so that my partner can take that shot. Good reflexes are key.
@BadmintonInsight
@BadmintonInsight 2 года назад

Thanks for the video! A video suggestion I have is a follow up on the last part of the video; is there a way to anticipate properly? Are there any drills to practice reading skills? It’s a skill that I can’t seem to wrap my head around, so it would be great if you guys could make a video on it!
@BadmintonInsight
@BadmintonInsight 2 года назад
Yeah it's a complicated one and definitely one for a follow up video! You can also check out our other videos on drills which will help with learning your anticipation
@myclamish
@myclamish 2 года назад
I don't think there's a single way to anticipate "properly", since anticipating someone highly depends on the individual. Like every person has different body tells, has different play styles, and will resort to specific shots more often than others. But even then, some players will start to anticipate based on what they think your anticipation will be or just your general habits and stuff, so you'd have to start to anticipate what they will anticipate... It just comes down to being able to observe your opponent and break down everything they're doing with every shot you and they make. And I guess on the defensive side of anticipation, a basic kinematic understanding of where the bird can possibly go so you can quickly eliminate possibilities you have to defend. Or just literally train to get faster on the court. If you have faster reactions and can move faster, even if you anticipate wrong you can switch faster and not be in trouble.

Jenny and Greg, some of these drills are good for singles and some for doubles (for example in singles the Chen long /Axelsen simulation seems very good but not the boxing scenario), the other ones seem to be more suited for doubles only though. Am I correct?

Will suggest a small tip for beginners. During practice, Try to encounter a powerful smash at longer distance (near to back box). Then you feel it is easier. Gradually reduce the distance according to your improvement / reflexes until you reach the normal position. Only you need a friend who is a good smasher and willing to help you out. The above practices are pretty good to improve the reflexes, no doubt in it.

Plz make a video on the shots that should be played effortlessly but are unknowingly put a lot effort on . For eg, a normal lift should be played just by wrist power , but a lot of times we see players using their full arm and instead wasting their stamina. Basically they are overcommitting to a normal shot (Ignore my grammar)

The thing with the shuttle is that it slows down much faster then almost any ball. So when it reaches the other side’s floor the speed is like 70 km/h. While the tennis ball for example has the highest average serve speed of around 180 km/h. So it passes the receiver at 150 km/h. So actually this speed stuff is mostly for marketing and PR. It doesn’t mean that we do not need fast reactions but it is definitely not twice as tennis players.

Then go tell any top tennis player to try returning the smashes in badminton and see if they are going to make it.

You seems to forget the fact that badminton court is smaller than a tennis court.The smaller play area you have,the quicker reaction you'll need.Plus,the initial speed of 300+ or 400+ badminton smash can travel an amount of distances, then it slows down when it crosses the net.This means that the shuttlecock is like teleporting in your face all of a sudden.Bare in mind while it slows down,the shuttlecock is already about to hit the ground,and slows down doesn't mean that the shuttlecock just stop there in the air,it will keep flying fast and hits the ground. Now when you compare that with a tennis ball that travels at a speed like 180 kmh and reaches opponent's racquet at 150 kmh,which doesn't slow down much like a shuttlecock,but with a larger play area,you will still have the time to see where the ball is coming from, because the tennis ball doesn't teleport in front of you like in badminton,unless if you're receiving Andy roddick's serve.(I'm not saying that tennis doesn't require good reaction.) Badminton might not requires twice quicker reaction than tennis,but it certainly requires lesser reaction time than tennis.

Speed of the shuttle across the net by the receiver at middle court is 50 percent and at the base line is 70 percent less due to parachute effect. Pl. Check!
