The insulation comes in 48 inch strips which fit in-between the beams. I suggested they just put up every other board, but they just wanted to get it done. It wasn't too hard to get the insulation in, and the boards hold it in place.

2x4 on edge is stronger than laying flat: The bending strength (what engineers call the section modulus=S) of a 2x4 (or any other rectangular shape) is width X height squared / 6 (for orientation - that's for vertical loading). For a 2x4 oriented edgewise S=1.5x3.5x3.5/6=3.0625 inches cubed; oriented flat, S=3.5x1.5x1.5/6=1.31 inches cubed. Shear strength is about the same in either orientation. Stiffness is similar, but it's width x height cubed /12. That's why a 2x6 is nearly 4 times stiffer than a 2x4, spanning the same distance. Also, torque is force x distance, both in applied loading and resistance, so quatsch is correct for the 26 lbs at 27". To finish the loading calc, the tension on the fastener is the torque / the distance from the fastener to the edge of the base plate.

Those steel beams are an overkill, they are 20 times stronger than necessary. These guys use no common sense. They are used for a second floor. Also that Dry dirt filling the red sacks will never gain any strength, they will always be dry, unstable, held only by the plastic mesh, they are by NO MEANS adobes.

We already had the metal purlins, and they were cheaper than wood. As mentioned in previous videos, the dirt is damp. If it's too wet, it squishes out of the bags, if it's too dry, it sifts out. The clay, caliche, sand soil is packed and dries very hard much like rammed earth. Adobe means earth.
