Next time don’t use an aluminum pan without some kind of a saran wrap layer. The acid in the lime will dissolve some of the aluminum into the food and that’s really bad for you
@Dragantraces
@Dragantraces 4 года назад
This is what I just scrolled through all of these comments for. Aluminum and cast iron are those "reactive" metals recipes that call for "non-reactive" pans are trying to steer you away from. Lemons, limes, tomatoes, anything acidic can cause the reaction. It doesn't always happen. It depends on the strength of the acid and how long the food is in contact with the metal. But it can happen pretty darned quickly. And that reaction, while unlikely to cause you health issues, will make your delightful food taste worse than you can imagine. Using a barrier can be a solution, but barriers can be breached. Just use glass, stainless steel, or, if the dish is cold, like this one, plastic.
@HelloKittysFriend418
@HelloKittysFriend418 4 года назад
good to know!
@drflash36

Also, such reactive metals may give the resulting dish a sort of unpleasant metallic or 'tinny' flavor as well!

But I have heard about Mr. Rodgers and his lovely neighbourhood from originally comedy skits of it, then clips here and there from Americans mentioning it, and that Tom Hanks staring movie about it too. Over here in Ireland in the 90's, we had Bosco. I just got done watching your zebra cake demo. I loved it, by the way. I immediately subscribed to your channel now. Then I was scrolling down for something non political and low, and behold, this recipe came up from you. I do believe in hooked now. Especially with Vaentines day and Easter dinner coming up. These will be perfect for a quick and easy dessert. Thank you again. I also have the same name brand orange sqeezer. It was my mom's and given as a gift for her wedding shower gift in 1948. I will never replace this. It works much better than any of the new ones on the market. Mine is a different style. No metal cup is attached to it. It didn't come with one. Which is fine by us. We have plenty to use around our kitchen. We try to go naturally as much as possible in our home. Even make our own laundry soap, too. Lemons are great to use instead of bleach. I wipe out the stains in the kitchen sink. It also works on WHITES in your laundry. Blood stains, red sauce. So save the skin to reuse. They hold a couple of days in the frig. Also good for cleaning out garbage disposal by grinding it up. It makes smell fresh again. I'm not sure about the limes. I do believe they should work as well. Since the only difference is the flavor.

I’ve been wanting to try making this! I make a very similar Portuguese desert for my family all the time called bolo de bolacha (we call they bolacha Maria in Portuguese). It’s more tiramisu like, and uses homemade buttercream frosting. Dip the cookies in look warm espresso, then layer with the buttercream. I recommend adding cinnamon and ground dark chocolate between the layers as well (ground oreo is another great one to switch it up with). Go around 5 to 6 layers. After that, it’s just an icebox no bake cake! Excited to try this version!!

That was a very interesting lime burn story Emmy. Reminds me of when I was a teenager, renovating a house over the summer holidays with my carpenter dad. I got this weird rash, like large sections of my skin bloated out a few millimeters from the rest of my skin, as if there was a large pink rubber pad on my skin. I think it was the dusty environment that we where working and sleeping in, but Dad was unaffected. I have a lung condition that I think I was born with, and my Dad doesn't, despite his adult lifetime of construction work. My Dad's a tank. I'm guessing that maybe your husband's hands might have been rugged enough to have a protective layer of skin to help him withstand any juice that got on him. Gardeners, farmers and outdoor metal workers will know what I mean by a thicker protective layer of skin on your hands in dry weather. I'm guessing skin softening creams stop those thick layers of skin from forming, unless your working all day in hand skin thickening conditions.

I'm allergic to all citrus so I have a similar outcome if I've touched citrus, I also have it around my mouth if I accidentally eat it, and of course, breathing trouble quickly follows. Me and citrus are NOT friends. I have learned to substitute in vinegar and add flavorings to get the desired effect.

Growing up, my mom would make this for our family. Both my parents are from Mexico and I grew up predominantly in Southern California. It brings great memories for me and I am happy that you shared this dessert!

My mom always made a similar thing growing up. Graham crackers and sweetened condensed milk mixed with lemon juice. Layered and chilled. So yummy and quick to make. I made a dessert using Maria cookies crushed and mixed with melted butter and pressed into a pan. The filling was sweetened condensed milk mixed with white chocolate pudding mix, dream whip (the powder kind mixed up with milk and vanilla) and a splash extra milk to make enough for the pudding mix and mixed in drained crushed pineapple. Was like a mock pineapple cheesecake.

My mother taught me to make “Snow Ice Cream” when I was a child. It was simply fresh fallen CLEAN snow and sweetened condensed milk. (She would often take a bowl out and set it on our patio table as it was snowing to catch snow as it was falling.) I now make it every time it snows with my daughter. She LOVES it, and as soon as we’re finished making it, she calls my mother to tell her. It’s darling!

You grab a cup and take a couple of Maria’s and place them inside the cup, with a spoon you crush them Maria’s to bite size pieces try to make sure you don’t crush them to where they become crumbs you’re essentially just trying to break them up in small pieces. Once you’ve done that you add some milk and enjoy it like cereal. I know it may sound strange but it tastes really great it’s not too sweet and makes a great little snack
