I live here in the philippines and i constatly use bamboos for chicken coups, dog houses, and other livestock housing and cages. I can agree with your knots and lashing technique even it's different with the materials i used. But i noticed you used green or undried bamboo poles. No matter how tight you tied them, when those pole dries up and shrink, your knots and lashings will loosen for sure. When you opted to lash or tie bamboos, better use dry poles.....

You are definitely right. I’m was busy tightening a few today. I’m so impatient though and wanted to shoot that video without waiting for the bamboo to dry. I know dry all my bamboo before I have projects to do

Very good illustration if the knots. The only thing I would do different wound ne to finish off with a round-turn & 2 half-hitches. They are simple, reliable, addt attitudinal tension to the standing part while being ties, and can easily be untied while under strain.
@HomesteadinHawaii
@HomesteadinHawaii 2 года назад
Thanks for that, I’ll give it a try on my next lashing project and see how it works out.

Thank you for making this video. I am literally sitting here with two pieces of bamboo in my lap and it would REALLY help if you didn't change angles in the middle of the tutorial. Its super confusing.

Hey Sean thanks for taking the time to make the video. I've done a number of buildings using square lashings here in Panama and I've found it difficult to finish them using either a clove hitch or constrictor knot since the cord can slip on the shiny surface of the bamboo. To get past this I start with a timber hitch and leave about an eight inch tail. Make the lashing as you do (we call the cinch turns frapping turns) then finish by looping back to the timber hitch and knotting the ends together with a square (or reef) knot. Difficult to describe in words but give it a go, I think you'll like it.

Mahalo for sharing. I think I get what you are trying to say and I’m definitely going to give it a go. The Clive hitch does have its issues.

These are very useful lashings and ties, thank you for sharing! I've been using a hemp twine just because it's biodegradable, I'd be curious what your opinion on appropriate twine, cord, rope would be. Maybe a potential video topic? Pros and cons of the different options? Take care!
@HomesteadinHawaii
@HomesteadinHawaii 2 года назад
That could be a good idea. I'll have to start collecting different materials.
@72marshflower15
@72marshflower15 2 года назад
@Lindsay Haven ~ using hemp/coconut rope is good, but you should seal it with linseed oil or some other nontoxic oil sealant to secure longevity in the line you use. ✨ 🍻 ✨

The tie off with less than an inch from the bamboo end ...that would drive me nuts. I could never trust that it won't work it's way off then end with the constant movement of a typical tree.

Hopefully you are working with bamboo that is dry already so it won’t shrink. But once in a while you have to tighten. That’s why I like using bolts mostly
