I just got this kit and found your video and am so pleased that you removed everything I didn't want to be part of my project. I am new to this hobby and would not have been able to do this without your video so thanks for taking the time to share this with us and I look forward to watching many more of your videos.....

Dein Video ist Spitze, ich will dieses Modul auch nach bauen. Ob ich es dann auch brauche weiß ich noch nicht. Your video is top, I want to build this module also. Whether I need it then I do not know yet.

If you've already built it completely, can you just remove the IC from the DIP chip and therefore remove its current pull without negatively affecting things? Or will the other extra components mess things up?
@KristianLaholm
@KristianLaholm 8 лет назад
+Miles Aurbeck Yes removing the IC will fix the current pull and has no other negative affect on the power supply.

+kristianlaholm thanks for the info. I also heard that for 110v input you should upgrade the transformer. What would you recommend?
@KristianLaholm
@KristianLaholm 8 лет назад
+Miles Aurbeck I have only built the 230v version same problem with transformer, if you need high current output I would upgrade the transformer.

+kristianlaholm Hi there - another question if you don't mind. I'm researching transformers as you suggest and all I'm finding are 220v to 12v or 24v. Can I use 110v as input to 220v regulators?
@KristianLaholm
@KristianLaholm 8 лет назад
+Miles Aurbeck Hi, all transformers have a "ratio" so the output voltage will follow the input voltage. If you take a 220v/24v transformer and use 110V as input you will get 12v output, the only problem is the power rating that will be wrong. I would search old stuff/scrap for transformer before using the "wrong" one. I am no "expert" so be careful and don't burn down the house :)

Hi...cool video, thanks! Is it possible just to switch out the LM317 with an LM338 instead? Or does it need a lot more figuring out? I just bought myself a couple of these kits, but i hate to blow one up through my ignorance if i use LM338 instead. Thanks!
@KristianLaholm

Reading the datasheet LM317 and LM338 has the same Vref so the circuit should work. Check the pinout.

Hello, why you modify the original kit? does this modification gives some advantage? thanks.
@KristianLaholm
@KristianLaholm 7 лет назад
Hi, the first reson for the mods is that i don't need the functions that I remove. The second reson is that the functions are pulling power from the transformer, so by removing them I can pull more power (current) from the output.

Hello again I appreciate your kindly answer and you are right, in other you tube video about the same project recomends change the transformer and diodes to handle 3 amps and not just 1 amp because many people did complaint about the bad quality of this transformer; thanks.
@KristianLaholm
@KristianLaholm 7 лет назад
Hi :-) For the price of the kit we can't demand much more, but as it's a simple kit it's very easy to hack and mod to your own needs.

the voltage is there but I don't know if the amps are sufficient for a tattoo machine.

what is the point a have all same results with complete kit...thanks anyway...how buy this kit but with trafo 12 v and 1A instead 150mA...so it is not low price...the price is equal to the amount of current it gives...to low

You don't have to take the wires off the display. I shortened mine and soldered them to the board. I left them a bit long because I put my display on some taller standoff's to get it closer to the top of the case. I am also installing a larger transformer that will give me nearly an amp of power rather than the 200 ma one that comes with the kit.
@KristianLaholm
@KristianLaholm 8 лет назад
The transformer is the the weak point of this kit. If you are pulling 1 amp ... check the LM317 for overheating.

I have built two of these so far and one of them runs 80 degrees F and the other only 72. I can't figure out why one is hotter than the other, but the one that is hotter I have noticed that one capacitor is hot as well, while the one on the other side of the regulator remains cooler at 72 degrees F. I would have to guess that the hotter Cap may have problems. I have one more to build and that is the one that I plan on putting a larger transformer in. I will let you know how it works out.
@cmj20002
@cmj20002 8 лет назад
So far I have not seen temperature higher than 74 degrees F. It seems to be handling the much larger transformer well. I had to cut a slot in the top of the case to fit it into the case.

hey man great job, i had the same idea. I was wondering what component i would have to upgrade to handle a larger trans, and how would i know which would handle the higher amps, i don't know if possible but i would love about 3 amp out put and at least 12v dc. is that even possible?
@cmj20002
@cmj20002 8 лет назад
Yea you probably can, but the transformer will not fit into the case. The largest transformer that would still fit is 12 volt .750 MAH. So 3/4 of an amp at 12 volts. This is way bigger than the transformer that comes with it. With the current transformer you would be lucky to get .100 mah at 12 volts. So this is a big gain over the one included. I purchased it at Mouser. Part #F114X.

Can i use 3A/12V X-formar or 3A/24V X-formar?
@KristianLaholm
@KristianLaholm 6 лет назад
I think it will work with both 12V and 24V, but drawing 3A will overheat the LM317 and blow the rectifeing diods.

Wait why did you remove those components? Btw I am really a noob to electronics. And also great video
@KristianLaholm
@KristianLaholm 8 лет назад
Hi, thanks for your comment. I removed the components for 2 reasons: 1) I have no use for the functions of those components. 2) The components are "eating up" power/current from the transformer. I want all the power/current to go to the LM317 and the voltage output.

I got one of these a few years ago now, I was quite disappointed as they sent me a transformer for 240 volt mains, and of course living in the good old US of A, we have 110 volt mains. I let it lay in a pile for about a year, when I tore apart an old stereo and found a good transformer that would do the job, so I replaced the wrong one with the right, and used it a couple of times, but I found that the rheostat was a bit too touchy and too easy to bump and raise the voltage over what I needed. So I have returned to my home built DC power packs that I built using 18650 batteries with step up and step down converters. I built these in small cases so they are very portable, and the screws for adjustment is well protected inside the case with a hole the size of a small screwdriver above each adjuster, and a meter built into each so I know exactly how many volts I am putting out. I have 3 of them that I take with me when we are in the RV, and bring back in the house when we return in the spring, one set at 5 volts but, of course, adjustable to about 11.5, the second is set at 12 Volts, up adjustable to 23.5, and the third built with 8 batteries is set at 32 volts, and adjustable to 94 volts DC which I use for outdoor testing of 50 and 100 Watt LED lights.

+Mads Storm Andersen Under 9V and 100mA it works nice and stable with my modifications (EU 220V version). The problem is the transformer that is to small, pulling to much current and the AC voltage from the transformer drops. For the price of this kit you do not get more, a bigger transformer that can handle more current solves the problem.

This kit will not put out that current and the diods are only rated 1A. Then i tested my kit I got 0.15A at 7.5V, a factor of 10 to low current.
