At some point, you’ve probably heard someone use any or all of these four words to describe someone. But there’s a really excellent chance that person had no idea what these terms mean. But SciShow is here to help clear up some of these definitions, and explain why the weather isn’t schizophrenic, and how your ex probably isn’t actually a psychopath.

You left out a couple psychological terms that people tend to overuse/use incorrectly a lot: - Autism - ADHD

Yeah, I have been diagnosed with Autism spectrum disorder, even if it would have been called Aspergers in the passed, and every time someone uses Autism as an insult it feels like they are saying that a medical profession diagnosed me with being a complete imbecile. It hurts, and sometimes it traps me in a loop thinking about every time someone used Autism as an insult.

My childhood friend committed suicide last summer because she was bipolar. She'd been secretly seeing a therapist but couldn't afford the drugs. She was so ashamed that she didn't tell anyone, and she was gone before anyone could help. The morning before she called me out of nowhere, after years of not seeing each other, and told me that had been diagnosed. She asked me to book a ticket to come see her, so I did as soon as she hung up. I arrived the next afternoon to the news she had killed herself. Ever since this happed I have gone berserk when someone says they have bipolar disorder because they were sad yesterday but now they're happy. Please respect the people who have these disorders.

Oh wow, I'm so sorry you lost your friend to Bipolar Disorder 😔 It's so heartbreaking that she was so ashamed that she couldn't seek support when she needed it so desperately. The shame complex our society has about mental illness is literally killing people. I'm glad things are improving, in that respect, but it seems like progress is agonisingly slow. And for someone to lose their life because they can't afford the medications they need is both devastating and infuriating to me. I feel like as communities, we're continually failing people with mental illness and it's so hard to get people to understand. Please keep a close eye on your own mental health, hun. Losing someone to suicide puts you at higher risk of mental ill-health, yourself. Take care and I wish you all the good stuff in the world 💖 xox

Azzy Azzbourne I can't believe her life was in the hand of a piece of paper. What the hell, human civilization? You should know human's systems are going bad if a person's life depends on a piece of paper. Are you serious? A life is more important than a piece of paper. I hate how people are valuing money over lives. I hope you are okay now. You probably know if you lose someone you love, you could go in a state of depression or other mental illness so be careful and try to forget what has happened at least a little bit.

I hardly believe that the misuse of an academic term for a medical condition means offence to people suffering from it. Maybe you could cope differently from your loss instead of going "berserk" against the obviously ignorant that misuse the term. Berserk Injuriously, maniacally, or furiously violent or out of control.

+theduke ofweasels (Weasel) Being sad is like "I don't wanted this to happen to me" or "I want something else", while depressed is more like "I am just not enjoying life at all, right now, and I don't really want anything, except stopping to suffer, even if it means death"
@thedukeofweasels6870
@thedukeofweasels6870 8 лет назад
Mercure250 Exactly! people often think you're just being spoiled or unsatisfied it with what you have and say things like "well if you don't like your life change it" but that's not going to work when your brain is biologically incapable of feeling happiness at that moment. It doesn't matter what you do to fix things on a physical level it's still not going to change how you feel until you fix your brain!

I have a friend who was diagnosed with schizophrenia. He went to a concert and got attacked after leaving. A scuffle ensued and his attacker was left with wounds that later killed him. This person has never been violent, angry, or carried a weapon. This didn't stop people from bullying both him and his mother over facebook because they were misinformed on schizophrenia and its onset. I've even had coworkers joke about the situation after I told them what was happening. If anyone takes anything away from this video, please think about judging others before getting all the details. My heart goes out to people with mental disorders and their families and friends who take care of them.

While it's a neurological disorder and not a mental disorder, i hate how much wrongly the term "autistic" can be used. I've heard so many people around me saying stuff like "Oh, it's so autistic, binge-watching a tv show the entire night". Most people have no idea what being autistic means and, worst of all, they don't want to hear what an autistic person has to say about it. I know that, i try to advocate as much as i can about my autism and neurotypical people can be quite... not so nice about it, to say the least.

This is a very relieving video to watch considering how my own family suffers from these disorders on a daily regular basis. Hearing people use these terms in casual everyday small talk does set me on edge a little... My father was subject to abuse and trauma as a young boy while my mother had birthing complications which would eventually result in many illnesses mentioned here in this video, all on the severe side of the spectrum. It's a miracle my little sister and I came out as well as we did. Now I can just refer everyone misusing these terms to this video XD

Thank you for bringing attention to the negative effect the casual misuse of these terms has on society. A student of mine developed schizophrenia her final year in school. It was a heartbreaking experience. Most of her paranoia and hallucinations involved her younger brother, who adores her. The things she accused him of would just gut him. I can only imagine how hard it is for him to hear people throw that term around while his sister is truly suffering.
@HannigramS

It really starts to wear down on me after a while when I constantly hear people describe themselves or others as "OCD" and "bipolar" when those two mental disorders completely robbed me of my teenage years and have caused me so much hardship. Other 15 year old girls were excited about spin-the-bottle and the latest drama with their friends while I was struggling to make it through the school year. Mental illness carries a huge stigma and there is so much misinformation and ignorance regarding it. Throwing around names of mental disorders as adjectives to describe personality quirks perpetuates this.

I have the same with Asperger's, I used to be part of a group and 50% said they had Asperger's, I was 1 out of 4 with a formal diagnosis that is out of about 100 people (I only went to the smaller meets and had to leave if too many turned up).

I see a lot of people saying that complaining about incorrect use of these terms is just choosing to be offended and that we should be able to use language how we want. I 100% agree that you can use language in whatever way you like, and language evolves and words take on new meaning in social settings. But I feel that if you find out that, actually, incorrect use of these words can hurt someone, and is generally harmful to the way that people with mental illness see themselves - and how society judges people with mental illness - then it is just kinder to use the words with more caution. We should all, surely, aim to be kinder to each other.
@emberhermin52
@emberhermin52 2 года назад
Sure, but terms like "depression", "narcissistic", and "bipolar" were colloquial first and I don't think it's wrong to use such terms colloquially as long as you're using them in a way that's true to their original meaning.

Another commonly misused psychological term is the word "phobia." I hear people talking about all of their "phobias" when they have no idea what they're talking about.
@EpisonicProject
@EpisonicProject 8 лет назад
Phobia a persistent irrational fear
@kerolox7929
@kerolox7929 8 лет назад
EpisonicProject On such a level that the person is unable to function on any normal level. Just being incredibly afraid of spiders and screaming everytime I see a spider does not make me arachnophobic. If I had actual nervous breakdowns when someone so much as said the word "spider" then perhaps you are arachnophobic. That sort of idea. People throw this word around without really understanding it.
@libbybollinger5901
@libbybollinger5901 8 лет назад
+Jesus2ndCousin but if you saw a spider, and couldn't move, or something like that, you would still have a phobia. A milder one, but one nonetheless. If it notably makes life harder for you, it's a phobia
@goosetheft4187
@goosetheft4187 8 лет назад
+Jesus2ndCousin With my understanding, if you are screaming at a spider and it isn't dangerous or toxic then i would call it a phobia because it would be persistent and irrational
@ralphschraven339
@ralphschraven339 8 лет назад
I thought +Jesus2ndCousin had to be mistaken when he wrote, "just being incredibly afraid of spiders and screaming everytime [sic] I see a spider does not make me arachnophobic". However, I found myself looking up the DSM-5 criteria on this, which were neatly described and provided with an explanation here: www.theravive.com/therapedia/Specific-Phobia-DSM--5-300.29-(ICD--10--CM-Multiple-Codes). This is not only against my expectations but also against common descriptions such as by Merriam Webster's dictionary or Wikipedia's entry on arachnophobia. However, one has to question how relevant any of this is when someone wishes to say they have a certain "phobia". You may not have the disorder, but how else are we going to describe these irrational and persistent fears of things that don't meet these hefty requirements? I guess "phobic tendencies" would be a good candidate. If anyone has a better one, please do share it with the rest of us. After all, mine has more syllables than I'd like.

the problem with "trigger" is that it has a much wider range of meanings (as both a noun and verb) than any of the terms in the video and unlike those, historically the term "trigger" was used with completely different meanings before it came to be used in a psychological context. But yeah, I agree that some people are just using it in a really bad way. It will be harder, though, to change that because of the different meanings.

I have a cousin who is autistic, so it's particularly insulting to me, because my cousin, as well as many autistic people, are actually quite bright. +♥ Pєяσηα ♥ Obsessiveness is definitely apart of autism. Though it's not impossible to be diagnosed with both ASD and OCD. I think I have some OCD tendencies. But they come from the obsessive and particular nature of my autism, and my anxiety. Mix ADD with that and clutter can be hypnotizing. Not having things in order drives me crazy. I can spend hours cleaning things in just the right way. Clutter throws me right off. And things need to have a set order about them. If someone tries to change around the house, it will not sit well with me. If I get pulled away from a task that involves making my surroundings "perfect", I will be in a state of distress all day. However, I unlike a lot of people with OCD, although it will make me more anxious than other people, I will not constantly think being pulled away from my task will cause the death of a loved one or a natural disaster.

Person gets startled, says "JEEZ! YOU ALMOST GAVE ME A PANIC ATTACK" Um. Have you ever had an actual panic attack? Do you feel like the world is literally ending? Can you breathe? Are you screaming? Is your heart rate dangerously high? Are you visibly shaking? Are you scared to be in public? Do you cry when people touch you? Have you been forcefully sedated? Panic attacks aren't a trivial thing. They're not just some stupid metaphor. They're actually a really horrible thing to go through, okay? Sincerely, a person with an anxiety disorder diagnosed by a mental health professional.

I like this episode a lot, since this stuff has always irritated me! Also, I think that "panic attack" and "ADD/ADHD" are really misunderstood by the general public and used incorrectly. No, I do think my first BF _was_ a sociopath... I didn't know that at the time (I was 19) but after talking to mental health professionals, they told me they thought he was... Of course, without seeing him they couldn't be sure. Why did I end up seeing mental professionals you ask? Because I ended up with PTSD and depression because of the hell I went through with him. What else would you call and person that beats the hell out of you, rapes you, chokes you, steals your money, tells everyone _you're_ the crazy one (not according to the doctors), and when you finally get him to leave stalks you, tries to seal your truck (because you _owe_ it to him... (As is what her took from you already wasn't enough..) Tells everyone you tried to kill him. holds a loaded 12 gauge shotgun to your head and threatens to blow your head off because "You are such a worthless bitch" and hands your next bf a note that stats "If you get married, I will kill you, and rape and kill her (as in me)". *And shows NO remorse*. Guess what landed him in jail... Intimate partner violence, armed robbery, and grand theft auto... I wasn't the only person he did this to. I hope the other ladies get the help they need. Here's the main points that distinguish a sociopath. 1) A disregard for laws and social mores 2) A disregard for the rights of others 3) A failure to feel remorse or guilt 4) A tendency to display violent behavior. From www.psychologytoday.com/blog/wicked-deeds/201401/how-tell-sociopath-psychopath And before you whine and cry that I hate guys, not true... Guys have been some of my best friends. That's fucking appalling. And men think it's still ok to victimize women. And 1.7% of men have had this happen as well, although I think this is under-reported due to shaming, Of course there is much more than _just rape_ included in the study.

They are. In the simplest terms, a sociopath lacks empathy (the ability to read or measure another's emotions) while a psychopath lacks sympathy (the ability to care about another's emotions). It's actually a lot more complicated than that, but that's the most brief description I can give without going deep in to the rabbit hole.
@andrep4805

Sociopaths are made, while psychopaths are born. Cleckley and Hare are two major psychologists in the field. Cleckley described more well-to-do psychopathic individuals in institutions, while Hare focuses on both P/S, but in prisons. Psychopaths aren't always violent, they just naturally lack empathy, anxiety, and are usually manipulative and overconfident. Sociopaths usually suffered terribly and lack empathy, but suffer anxiety and frequently are criminals. Why the confusion? Mental disorders cause distress, like the video states, so if you aren't bothered or bothering others, the DSM-V won't label you sick. Most group psychopaths and sociopaths as one group, and the DSM-V doesn't recognize either. Antisocial Personality Disorder, 'is' a disease because it disrupts lives and is what the DSM-V uses. Psychopathy is basically personality if the person doesn't commit crimes. Legal reasons make it muddy too. Psychopaths get longer prison sentences, so no one wants to label children as psychopaths, for that reason, and the idea/hope that they can change. Hare's Psychopathy Checklist has 2 components Pt1 and Pt2. Pt1 traits are more psychopathic, while Pt2 are more psychopathic. He only believes in them as one group, psychopaths even though he splits the traits down that line. I disagree with parts of Hare's work, but he does a good job, so I respect a lot of it. His focus on prisoners skews things, but you can't easily study the general population, and it would be bad to legally label non-violent or non-criminals as psychopaths or sociopaths. Lol, hopefully this wasn't tmi :P

There's something that I find far worse than using these words in ways for which they weren't intended. I was diagnosed with OCD as a teenager and although I manage it (and hide it) fairly well to the point where most people only begin to notice it (as far as I know) when they know me well and for a long time, I have found that people not only don't take it seriously but they think it's funny. After people learn my repetitive behaviors and catch me performing some menial task over and over again until I get it right, they'll mess up my work because they know I'll have to do it again. For example, while having a meal with friends and casually talking I might do something mundane like carefully move small objects near me so that they are in even rows and everything is straight. If one didn't know me they may not notice what I'm doing but those who do think it's funny to mess it up when I'm done and watch me have to do it again. While I've spoken with my close friends about why that's absolutely disgusting and they've largely stopped, people who know me just well enough to know but not well enough where I've explained it to them will do it. Even my friends can't seem to help themselves every now and then. They catch me squaring a book with the edge of the table (which might take five minutes) and just as I walk away they'll move the book. It really fucking sucks and unless one experiences it for themselves they cannot possibly understand what that does to me. People treat OCD as a joke. It's not about being neat. I'm a messy person but as long as there's order to the chase in my head then I don't care if the table is messy. A pile of books on the floor doesn't bother me as long as they're ordered by size and perfectly straight. Hell, I've even straightened garbage in the garbage can. But people don't get that and if they did, they'd stop making joking about it, at least in the way they joke now (there are dark jokes about everything but that comes from a place of understanding, not malice).

Not the best way to help someone with OCD in my opinion because sometimes it would lead to her choking back tears.

Many people self-diagnosed with those words (and autism, and aspergers) almost as if it made them special...but no, unless you have been diagnosed by a doctor, odds are those are just personality traits (and that's cool). No everything has to be a disease.
@leerowan9640
@leerowan9640 8 лет назад
+Cynthia Sonier okay but seriously, while self-diagnosis isn't something people should really do and there is an issue with people trivialising mental condiitons, it's important to recognise that a lot of people, particularly young people, can't get professional help because of their own fears or outward circumstances (which is ironic since often times, a controlling or abusive environment can be what sets off mental illness). Also, a lot of people with mental health conditions can also struggle with irrationality or a need for certainty, which can easily lead to self-diagnosis. I self diagnosed with depression about two years ago up until I found out how wrong that was and recently, after speaking to a doctor and a councillor, I found out that I probably do have it so it's really not always a trying-to-be-special thing.

+Cynthia Sonier Well ... I self-diagnosed my autism, which cropped up in my medical records whilst I was checking them for evidence of dyslexia in my childhood. That should be no problem to anybody: I was training in psychology at the time. I immediately raised the issue with my GP within minutes - wherupon she made immediate referrals to the DPM and the ClinPsych lot. Within 6 months of this, I was diagnosed by a psychiatrist. This was then further confirmed by an expert in the diagnosis of autism in adults. I went about it the right way. I should point out, though, that your vision of what happens in self-diagnosis (for the very most part) is not accurate.

I self diagnosed depression and anxiety... But because I was afraid of being wrong about it, I didn't get help for many years. When I finally saw a psychiatrist, I was diagnosed pretty quickly. Like, within a day or two. I think it's important to seek help if you suspect you might have a certain disorder. You could be right... Just make sure you talk to a professional about it because if you truly have something like a mood disorder or personality disorder etc, it's in your best interest to seek treatment.
@LauraPictures
@LauraPictures 7 лет назад
First of all, what Hank introduced, as well as autism, are no diseases, those are disorders. A diseases are e.g. viruses or bacteria. Second of all, even if one should not rely on self diagnosis, they are still important, bc without them one wouldn't have a clue about what could be going on with them or what they might have. And once one has a self-diagnosis, one can check with a medical professional to confirm or not confirm their suspicion, because the chances that one goes to a medical professional and this medical professional also happens to know about the psychological disorder one has and also recognizes one to have this disorder by chance, are very low. The one problem you might have been thinking of is that some people only have very vague ideas and stereotypes of certain psychological disorders and if those few points fit than they claim that term for themselves. But if one actually looks up the diagnostic criteria in a diagnostic manual and makes an effort to research what every criteria means, and they still fit them than it's very likely that they are correct and they shouldn't be ridiculed simply because they found out more about themselves and can now put a name to what is going on with them.

@ZannyAisling
@ZannyAisling 9 лет назад
It's not just about taking offense, that would really depend on the person (I assume). It's more that both folks with psychological disorders and well-read people tend to find it annoying when words are repeatedly misused. Also, like with driving cars and egging on global warming, just because someone isn't trying to downplay a disorder or offend someone doesn't mean that isn't what'll happen. To be honest, I think the human race should cease using "Offend" in this context. It comes off as a only a bit bothered or irked, it's used so much to dismiss arguments I think we should move on to something different. I guess "hurt" always had the proper ring in an emotional context. At least we aren't hijacking PTSD terminology so much anymore....

It' not about people getting offened, it's that the minimise the problem when they say stuff like that. I've had depression and anxiety for years and constantly get people who stuff like well "I get sad too sometimes but I don't throw around a fancy word like that" or my mom kept saying to stop feeling sorry for myself and just get of bed and just do things, and that she gets nervous too but just fucking deals with it. That's the cause of them using depression and anxiety to describe what they have and when someone who actually have the disease they don't take it serious because their condition isn't that serious.
@DeToxCommunity
@DeToxCommunity 9 лет назад
Amandaisabookfan It's an uphill battle that can't be won. Most of the time, we relate to others thoughts based on our own. Look at how screwed up some of Freud's psychological theories were for examples. It is simply how people think and it makes it tough to wrap your mind around someone having it so much worse than yourself. Even knowing that, when I am around someone suffering from actual depression, there is a part of me that wants to tell them to suck it up and deal with it, but luckily my brain knows that isn't how it works :p I'm not arguing that it isn't a problem, just that it is a problem without a solution. You can't possibly educate the entirety of the public, and even if you do, there will be plenty of people that can't get around what I described in the previous paragraph. Also, I'm sure you've had to deal with a lot of people not actually "getting" your depression. Just understand that for someone who doesn't have it (such as me), fully comprehending it isn't possible. You assume that the lowest you have ever felt is as low as it gets, at least in regard to pure emotion. Idk if it is true, but I think it is impossible to imagine an emotion you haven't felt before.

Psychopathy is a genetic disorder while a sociopath is influenced by social factors growing up.Both are known as anti-social personality disorder however they are slightly different . Psychopaths have no empathy or emotion while sociopaths do particularly towards loved ones. Psychopaths have controlled behavior while sociopaths are erratic . Psychopaths have a high predisposition to violence while that varies among sociopaths but violent crimes by psychopaths are very low in number. Sociopaths are impulsive and their violent outbreaks tend to be unplanned while a psychopath would be very calculating and manipulative . Psychopaths tend to have successful careers and can maintain a steady careers while sociopaths find it hard to hold down a job. The opposite is true in relationships ,psychopaths are mostly unable to maintain steady relationships ,they are master manipulators .Sociopaths can have superficially normal relationships. ASPD is more a spectrum though than a set thing.

jplb96 Well, I was writing you a clear explanation until I accidently clicked randomly and my whole post got deleted (thx youtube). Basically the traits between Psychopaths and Sociopaths are minimal. Majority of scientists and psychiatrist recognize the fact that the two are identical and have instead divided the psychopaths into two groups: successful (your regular serial-killer ) and unsuccessful psychopaths (your regular snake-in-suit). Everything you've said to explain traits of Sociopaths can easily be transferred into Psychopaths (that's why nobody really uses sociopath(y) anymore - because they are the same) . i personally have ADD (so not nearly as extreme as the things discussed in this video), and one of the most important thing that people don't seem to know about things like add, down syndrome, autism, and things like that which some people might call a disorder, is that it isn't purely bad. most of the big scientists/inventors had AD(H)D (and left handed), people with autism are just amazingly talented, and people with down syndrome are extremely sociable and nice people. If there was a pill i could take to remove my ADD, i would refuse. it's something i have, and it's a big part of what makes me me. it doesn't make me better than other people, it doesn't make me worse than other people, it makes me different. and i'm proud of that.

Mackenzie Paterson my add is quite severe, and maybe i'm just too young to really be affected by the problems (i'm 15), but so far i've definitely had a lot of problems, but i've always found people and places where i fit in. for instance, i didn't do anything in school except staring out the window (literally nothing, i'd go through school without writing down a single word), but i'm now in a school where everybody makes the rules and everyone has to agree on every single rule and somehow it all works out fine. and i found friends (most of them also with add, and most of them are adults) that i can always count on even if we haven't seen each other in over a year. i'm also terrible at planning, but i found it not to be necessary to plan everything. and i imagine that once i get a job, it'd be something i can do from home, in my own time. i don't personally know you, and i've never gone through depression, but i did find that finding other people with add/adhd really helped. everybody needs help from people, if you can't find it in real life, thy the internet. good luck.

Anorexia would be another one. Many people around me say that when they see a skinny person that that person has anorexia. What they really mean is, "they are skinny," but they also most likely intend to mean Anorexia Nervosa. Anorexia is simply a loss of appetite. While Anorexia Nervosa is a psychological disorder where a person will go to great extremes to avoid eating with the intention of losing weight.

I suffer from chronic Anxiety and Depression, on top of Schizophrenic Dis-associative Personality Disorder, and leave my house maybe once a month (because I don't really have a choice). I've been on dozens of medications since I was a young kid, struggled with suicide, and have barely ever maintained much of any kind of relationship with anyone. When people tell me to get over it, or say I'm just lazy, or a pussy, it doesn't make things easier. I don't think I'm the one with the problem, it's everyone else who thinks it makes me less of a person who has the problems.

I thought Psychopathy and Sociopathy were extremely different. From what I've heard/read, psychopaths have no conscience, no empathy, and so on, but also had no will, want, or desire to harm others. They just do not have the capacity of feeling emotions. Then, sociopaths are people who gain pleasure from controlling, manipulating, and harming people, as well as enjoying attention and getting away with harming others.
@Belrodes
@Belrodes 9 лет назад
That seems to be a common theme here! They are the same diagnosis, although gaining pleasure from their actions is not part of sociopathic behavior. Also important to note is that these people have plenty of emotions, they simply lack the ability to empathize with others.

Psychopathy and sociopathy are both disorders that describe people who lack empathy or have trouble empathizing. The main difference is people are born with psychopathy and sociopaths develop a lack of empathy through events in their life. Although sociopaths can empathize with people they are close to, but psychopaths can do this with no one. That's the difference. 1 in 100 people are sociopaths and 1 in 1000 people are psychopaths.

Autism isn't generally classed as a disorder or illness, it's a neuropsychiatric disability. Autism is a spectrum as well, I am very high functioning and my IQ is higher than the average 16 year old. Someone with the same diagnosis can be unable to wear clothes because of the seams, only be able to eat mushed foods and have outbursts of uncontrollable rage when something doesn't go as planned.(these are real people I've met). There are as many types of autism as there are individuals with autism.

Also "Schizoid" isn't really the same as Schizophrenic. Schizoid Personality "Disorder" exists, and it's not really anything like Schizophrenia. Schizoid Personality is where you come off emotionally cold to everyone, isolate yourself and prefer to be isolated or have difficulty telling that you are lonely. It's not just introversion, it's some far extreme of it I guess. I mean, it's more complected than that, but basically.

I'm right there with you until that tiny bit about 'psychopathy' being an outdated term- it is most certainly not an outdated term, at least, not in the forensic arena, and professionals use all three (Psychopathy, Sociopathy, and ASPD) interchangeably. Lately, more often than not, professionals ascribe to the thought that a psychopath is 'born' while a sociopath/ASPD person is 'made' and ties this all rather closely to the nature v. nurture debate. Terms are not exactly officially defined like the DSM has done in the past, and psychopathy/sociopathy is not technically a diagnosis, but they are all still constructs that are heavily researched in forensic populations and there is talk of bringing them back as part of a "spectrum" classification to ASPD. There's also some really cool theories on evolution and how that ties in to psychopathy. The rest is spot on and THANK YOU for this video.

My mother was diagnosed as bipolar many years ago. After eventually finding a tumor in her thyroid, which was benign and removed, she stopped using her medication for her condition. Her reasoning for this is that "Doctors are out to get her" and the world is against her. Over the past year and a half she has begun talking to herself and acting as if she is arguing with someone when nobody is there. Whenever confronted about this act, she either brushes it off as non-existent behavior or says she was just thinking out loud. Granted, her "Thinking out loud" consists of her screaming at the top of her lungs in her room majority of the day. She also swears far more (not that I'm against swearing), but it's just not that usual for her to swear as much as she does now. Would this be considered an extreme state of her being bipolar? Or is this perhaps schizophrenia?
@mugflub
@mugflub 9 лет назад
I can tell you it's really hard to say in this situation. People even disagree about diagnoses in situations that are less complex than your mother's. The thing about these diagnoses is that they are constantly evolving because nobody really fits 100% into a category. People are unique. That being said, more needs to be known to really figure out what's happening with your mother. When this all started, her age, if any drugs are being used, current level of functioning, sleep, if it is the result of a medical condition, patterns of behavior, other symptoms, etc. etc. I will say that psychosis can be a symptom of severe mania. It may also be a symptom of schizophrenia that was previously being treated with her medication. I'm sorry you're going through this. Mental disorders are a terrible thing to watch. If you think she may be a danger to herself or others, I would suggest considering calling 911, a psychiatric emergency team, or at least encouraging her to see a psychiatrist, although it sounds like she's not open to that at the moment. Good luck to you both.

mugflub I appreciate the sentiment. We have (my family that is) called the police on one occasion, but the officer said quite clearly that unless she commits some kind of act.. they can't do anything. So, for a whole year it's been in the back of my whole house's mind when she'll snap completely and hurt herself or one of us. I mean, her outbursts can last anywhere from a few minutes to an hour or two if nobody interrupts her. Something I didn't say before is she'll switch her accent in her self-talking drastically. One moment she's completely calm, and the next few words she says in a raspy scream. Then going back to being calm. Sometimes she'll do that I forgot the technical name of is say a single word out of a line of her screaming and repeat it over and over. Often times each usage of the word getting more violent when spoken.. really rather disturbing. But yeah. Her case has developed over the years and she's only in her mid 40s (not in menopause or anything). My older brother and I ~think~ it's schizophrenia, but it could just be a case of extreme mania or still being bipolar but not having her medication for it as...as I said before..she stopped taking it thinking that "Doctor's are evil." Rather depressing there isn't any system in place that can't allow you to help people who aren't in their right minds. My mom used to go out with us to dinner and all sorts of stuff, and now she doesn't even go with us to grandparent's house for Christmas Eve (which I read was a symptom of being schizophrenic is that they're extremely unsocial).
@KattoTang

Kilivin I'm not a doctor, but that does sound rather like schizophrenia. However, that doesn't mean she's not bipolar as well--people with mental disorders can often have more than just one, which is called comorbidity. Comorbidity makes it that much harder to correctly diagnose people. So it's difficult to say what your mother has. She really does need to be re-evaluated by a professional, because even if you could get her to take her meds again, if she has schizophrenia instead of or in addition to bipolar disorder, she would need new meds. Bipolar disorder is usually treated with antidepressants, whereas schizophrenia is treated with antipsychotic meds. In any case, that's a shitty situation to be in and I sympathize. I hope somehow your mother will be able to get the help she needs someday.

We have become so desensitized to the word as a whole except when you have a mental disorder. So when it is said it belittles and minimalizes everything happening to people with mental illnesses.

What ProfAwesomeO described is correct. However, I'd also like to add that there's a lot of debate over whether or not he would actually qualify as a sociopath, high-functioning or otherwise. His ability to form close interpersonal connections (his friendship with John being the main example) and a few other things would indicate he doesn't. Actually the whole Sherlock calling himself a Sociopath is correct. A sociopath can still have empathy towards others and can realize when they hurt others but often don't think beforehand that what they might do or say might have a negative effect on their loved ones. IE Sherlock is super duper obsessed with his puzzles and often puts them before his friends but when he does hurt his friends he does realize and does care but really can't figure out or stop himself from doing what makes him happy, ie his puzzles, without hurting his friends. Like he knows what he did was wrong but he just can't figure out beforehand if something is right or wrong for the most part.

+Kay That is introversion, not sociopath behavior. Sherlock is an introvert, and did a great job portraying a serious case of it. I know this because I'm also an introvert and understood exactly where he is coming from. Introverts can empathize with others just fine, as long as they actually focus on it. Hence why when I try to socialize, I'm mentally exhausted within an hour. Introverts are also far more capable of working alone then with others, and tend to think a good deal more then most people... Just not about people...

I almost agree with you about Sherlock's character; he seems to view Watson as a useful pet rather than a friendly companion. He is capable of recognizing when he has offended his pet, and often chooses to rectify his actions; but that does not make him sympathetic, let alone empathetic. However, sociopaths are NOT capable of empathy. That is actually the definition of Sociopathy.
@kayc196
@kayc196 8 лет назад
Tim Davis No it's an antisocial disorder. Sociopath means that you involve yourself with immoral behavior but unlike a psychopath a sociopath can still have empathy for others. That's the key difference. Sociopaths can be just as manipulative and hurtful as a psychopath however they aren't completely void of empathy. That's what I was explaining. Like he does immoral things that hurt other people but doesn't really notice until it blows up in his face and then he feels bad but just does it again. So therefor he is a sociopath. He does harmful things and immoral things but he does feel bad sometimes.

My medication has been stable for a while now, and I went on to finish school, my bachelor's, master's, and I'm almost finished with my Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree. It does effect my life somedays but for the most part I keep it in check via medicine and exercises given to me by my psychiatrist. I don't get offended when I hear people misuse my disorder because I know they don't mean anything by it, but I can see why others get upset.

I also hate the rise of the misuse of the terms 'autist', 'autistic' or 'autism' in reference to people that they disagree with on the internet. Just because someone is on either one side or the other of a polarised issue of current affairs, that doesn't make them autistic and neither do they exhibit autistic traits when vlogging about it just because you disagree with their perspective. It's almost as damaging to the public perception of autism as the old term for any condition on the autistic spectrum (i.e. "mental redardation"), and the misuse of these terms makes my blood boil with rage at you!

Thank You for this video. I am one of those people who can't leave my home because of severe Social Anxiety Disorder. So many people use Psychological terms as throw away adjectives, which belittles the conditions' sufferers. When these terms are used for people who don't have the conditions, it tends to make it seem as though we all have a choice whether to be mentally ill or not. Too often, people think we can just decide one day to be well, and that isn't how it works. It can take medication, therapy and sometimes electroshock therapy to get to a point of even minimal improvement. Medication has to be adjusted or changed as the effectiveness diminishes, and an improvement doesn't mean you're cured, only that the condition is better controlled. Having a psychological disorder can lead people to view you with disapproval or fear. The more we understand each other as individuals and not just as a label, the better we become as a society. More research and treatment resource funding needs to be available to help those who need it, or who may need it in the future.

THANK YOU! But the comments are full of people self diagnosing after this video. Please get a professional diagnosis before you say "I have (insert a mental health disorder)" you can say "I think I have (insert mental health disorder)" when you're suffering from said disorder and is diagnosed it feels extremely disrespectful when people use those terms without a proper diagnosis.

Cannot tell you how much I LOVED this video! For several reasons... First because you're showing people that using these terms as metaphors diminishes the real disorders...especially for those of us who suffer from them...like me. I was diagnosed with paranoid schizo-affective disorder when I was 16. For those who don't know that term...basically I have the 'best' of both worlds - as in the fact that I have both symptoms of bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. I suffer from auditory, visual and tactile hallucinations as well as the highs and lows that come from the bipolar side of this. And it drives me batty when people use these terms so casually. Like you said in the video, it diminishes the diagnoses and even sometimes gives people the wrong idea about what these disorders really are. The other thing I love that you mentioned at the end of the video is to not let the disorder define you. It took me many years before I finally came to the realization that when I said that "I'm schizophrenic" (and I usually do say that cause its much easier than saying "paranoid schizo-affective") that I was defining myself by my disorder...and that's not who I am at all. Its just something that I have... So thank you SO much for making this video! It means a lot to those of us who have these disorders that there's someone willing to take the time to educate people out there who may not be aware about these types of mental illnesses

The disease that deals with different personalities in one brain is called DID or Dissociative Identity Disorder which is when different personalities with completely different mindsets, looks, names, ages and backgrounds come from the same one personality. This split mostly happens because of an extremely traumatic event that the mind is trying to shield and protect you from. However this does not mean if your family suddenly dies you will obtain this disorder, because it doesn't happen to just anyone. However I'm not an expert at all so dont quote me on any of that and instead to your own research if you want to know more

+Veronica Charyton that's more or less word-for-word what an acquaintance of mine said about it, who's taking classes in psychology. It is extremely rare, and while technically curable, is extremely difficult to do so, to hear it from him.

+Veronica Charyton It is more common than people think, unless I live a really bizarre life, because I have dealt with at least 4 people with definite DID (and I dealt with their "multiple systems" each time).

There's an entire debate on whether or not DID is even an independent disorder, or it's a specific manifestation of something else.

As far as i know there is a difference between psyco and sociopath. Dnews made a video about it. It is something about psycopaths not understanding right from wrong because of a lack of empathy and a strong drive for pleasure . Sociopaths on the other hand understand that there are things that are right and wrong but their right and wrong looks different than ours. They might think that is is okay to kill for a 'good' cause while a psycopath would hurt others because why not. I'm not an expert this is just how i understand it. Sherlock might be a sociopath after all :) he does live by a 'means justify the ends' sort of code.

As a person struggling with schizophrenia, it's consequences and the related social stigma, and who is frequently frustrated by the way the term is misused and misunderstood, I really appreciate this video. SciShow is always super awesome but this time in particular it is extra super awesome. Thank you SciShow :) You've put a bit of light in what, for me, has been a pretty dark day - I often visit this channel and others like it when I crave company and intelligent conversation but am prevented from seeking it and/or enjoying it by what I see (but which others may not see) going on around me.

***** 5 letters - first line 8 letters -2nd line 4 letters -3rd line 6 letters - 4th line 5+8+4-6 = 10 Then theres 4 lines so 10 ÷ 4 = 2.5 0.5 for the apostrophe so 2.5 + 0.5 = 3 3 sides in triangle ILLUMINATI CONFIRMED!
