Cues can also programmed to feed the reference track into the Control room to have a fast and independent comparison possiblility.

to simplify working with cue mixes I usually only send the last mixgroups (drums, guit, bass, vox, keys) to the cue mix. this way automation will still be reproduced. always have aä the Monitor channels ( where i record) on cue and that's usually enough control for my artists

great i also use C2 as empty cue mix for listening to a reference track because usually i have proccess on the master channel . so by toggeling MIX/C2 on the control room its easy to compare

you also can use the cuesends to reference with reference tracks, just lay them to audio files and activate a cuesend channel. Route your audio track containing the reference track to no bus or no output so it will just get audible when the cuesend channel gets activated inside the control room. You now can level match the reference with your mix via the volume slider of the cuesend. this gets a very powerful tool when mapped to a midi controller, hitting a cuesend on/off with the push of a button. You also could reference your mix on a sum bus, with your mastering inside a mastering bus. Another mindblowing feature in cubase (we have a lot of those :) )...

In the Control Room settings, you can enable Talkback to automatically turn off when you start recording. And this is a very convenient feature. You do not need to assign a hotkey to Talkback.👍✊

Great video Chris! I also use Control Room to place inserts that I want to hear but don't want to print to a mix - like room correction EQ.

Salut chez toi! The control room is a must in our studio. We have 4 lines of headphones (cues) and the C.R. is a must. I set it up two years ago with an external in to connect an phone or ipod for the musicians when they need to practice with music already recorded. I also setup a shortcut key for the usb microphone we use as talkback. It's used at 100%. The level control of the click is probably my favorite function. Great idea to explain and share this in a video.

YES! Control Room is awesome. Use it all the time. Love to have different cues when recording and not having to make extra routing with buses

my main reason to use control room these days is that I put on the Sonarworks, Metric AB and Supervision and just leave them. no need to remember to turn off with rendering etc. Wben I did a lot more recordings before I also had 3 different mixes for each room. All in all Control Room is a must once you get used to it imo
@onwuchekwaferdinand9756
@onwuchekwaferdinand9756 Год назад
But you can still do all of that in CR without the need for Metric AB or a 3rd party plugins

@@onwuchekwaferdinand9756Metric AB can do a lot of stuff that control room cannot so it still makes sense for some people.

I couldn't agree with you more. I'd like to give you two tips... 1) The talkback button is extremely dangerous! I NEVER use a talkback button that needs to be toggled on and off. It's only a matter of time before someone makes a remark about the singers nose. Forgetting that there is a live talkback mic, and that session is ruined! I've found a good solution with my MOTU 828es audio interface. It has a footswiotch input that can be set to send to send key commands when the pedal is pressed and released. That way there is no way I can, accidentally, have a live talkback mic open. 2) You say you never use the inserts on the cue mix channels. You should. If not for your sake, then for the talents. I always put a brick wall limiter there, set a little bit above the highest level the talent should have. That way, if there is a an accident with feedback, a loud pop or any loud noise, THE TALENTS HEARING IS PROTECTED!
@ross9868
@ross9868 Год назад
I agree with you on the talkback button. There is a reason every console's talkback button had to be held down to be active. I worked at a studio (once) where the talkback was always on when the tape machine was stopped. It wasn't 10 minutes before the singer was crying because someone commented on her not ever being able to hit the high notes in any song.

Control Room is a such an amazing tool. Integrating it with my midi controllers via midi remote for things like talkback, click level, turning metronome on and off has been huge for my workflow. Also having the different mixes for musicians during tracking is crazy cool. Not to mention using it for quickly toggling a reference mix during mixing or mastering. Great tips Chris

I've only ever used CR in mixing. Never knew about these specific features for a tracking environment. It's really like a full featured hardware control center, but in virtual form. I figured it existed, since Cubase covers everything under the sun! 😉........more new stuff to learn!

the control room is really an amazing tool, i use it also for recording but also for mixing. Qhen i get a track to be mixed, i will put the original rough mix / demo into Cue 1 and i can switch back between my mix and the rough mix just with one button, that way i can easily crosscheck i dont forget an important element or my balance is totally different then what was the client envisioning originally..i use it alot!

Thanks for the always illuminating video, and yes I started using the control room from day one in Cubase(Got interested in it from your course Ia followed) since me and my comrad in music arms compose music on line, but only recently during mixing on my end, by sending rough mixes on a different cue etc. But always interested in your new tricks. So keep up the good work. We will certainly use the Cue mixes over and forth to each other.

So in the cue mix yu can add plugins…..does this mean if you monitor the cue mix are you monitoring with the effects already plugged in to control room and or is the musician yu are sending a mix to….are they hearing control room plugins clean with individual cue mix plugins or are they hearing the control room plugins?…..loved this breakdown and now understand quicklink!

basically you don't even need an hardware monitor controller anymore..... you can do mono/stereo-switch and alternative main outputs switch and click on/off e.g. with CR keycommands...

Chris, how do i make variaudio audition sound go to cue mix in Cubase? Sometimes i just want to fix something fast while recording (and i'm already with my Headphones on) BUT when i want to adjust a note in Variaudio quickly i CAN"T hear the fixes when i move the notes around because i'm hearing the Cue in my Headphones, when i go to the control room section on my Cue mix and switch the input to MIX it doesn't work either :( Any suggestions?

Chris - I'm using Cubase with a UA Apollo 8 and I swear that audio doesn't sound as good through the control room. I find my lows and low mids to be less solid than when I just run the audio from Cubase out using the UA Console. To me it should sound the same but I get the feeling that there is some kind of Phase issue going on. Is this something you've also experienced or heard about - would love to take advantage of what the Control Room has to offer but can't just yet until I figure this one out. Any thoughts would be so appreciated!
@Elvergudo07
@Elvergudo07 Год назад
In my opinion the control room is pointless inside of cubase if you have an UAD interface. The Apollo can handle all of the headphone mixes, talk back, etc with zero latency. I run an Apollo 8p and Apollo twin. I’ve never activated control room. I don’t think we are missing anything special.

I have to use 2 cue mixes because the drummer in my daughters band (the only thing I record) needs the click gunshot loud but the guitar and bass player want it at more reasonable level. Question, is there a way to get the click to a fader? I often have to pull the click back during drum breaks so it doesn't bleed into every drum mic and would love to automate that.
@ChrrZ
@ChrrZ Год назад
i dont think you can automate the click levels in cubase, you would rather need to use a sampler vsti and use some samples that as your click, i do that on vocal recordings too. On quiet parts the loud click from like the chorus section would totally bleed into the microphone, but when i´m using a sampler vsti (in my case i use NI Battery) i can automate the volume all accross the song
@ross9868
@ross9868 Год назад
@@ChrrZ I was hoping Chris had some super cool routing thing I didn't know about where you could route it to a fader. I have to change the click to often to have it programed. Sometimes I have to remove/change the accent or double time/half time it for whatever they are trying to play to.
@mixdownonline
@mixdownonline Год назад
You can easily record the click on a track and go from there ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0DmYOEy7Q58.html which will work well with what you have to do
@ross9868
@ross9868 Год назад
@@mixdownonline That'll work. I'll have to render for the different clicks but that is super easy to do with this method. Like I said above they usually need to flip flop between, accent on the one, no accent and half time or double time clicks, stick them all in a group an automate the group fader. The only real issue is for their "Math Rock" songs where time signatures and tempos are changing and during tracking they decide they need 4 extra bars of the 5/8 section before it goes into the 7/4 part. UGH! kids these days
