Rule 4B : be aware of sitting still for too long. Many years ago, in my 30's I got a thrombosis in my leg because of sitting recording and mixing for 5-10 hours a day. Get up walk around every 40 minutes guys... thrombosis kills you! I am a big fan of this channel and as a friend I want you to know, this is a genuine WARNING ⚠️ blood clots can move from the leg into the lungs and YOU DIE! All the tutorials and equipment in the world mean nothing if you aren't here to enjoy the process. ❤️BE SAFE ❤️ LOVE FROM LONDON 🇬🇧 x
I don't know much about music and even less about making music. However, I learn a lot from my friend who is an audio engineer. I must say that, it has many analogies to photography - I am a photographer. I can recommend this episode in its entirety to those who are interested in photography. The last bit simply push me into the chair. This is exactly what I always telling to my listeners about. Well done Sir. You've got subscriber.
I have a problem with waiting on the plugins. I know how I want something to sound, and I just get very impatient. I'm like "I have to put that NEAT reverb on & see how cool it sounds." LOL!
Totally! "How stay emotionally detached when needed" might be a great video, if there actually were ways to teach that. Listening to your tracks repeatedly and falling in love with mistakes, "this isn't fucked, it is charming and sounds handmade"; getting lost in presets, having sticky stereotypes, "Would Thom Yorke like this kind of analogue?"; and not being able to finish it, "It's okay but something is missing"... calling it quits, being "kinda okay with it", then after something less than 2 years being embarrassed, "I could do this so much better now, but that would be boring" and deleting it from your Soundcloud. Oh the joys of making music! 🧸💕🎶🦠🔨
Videos like this one teach in a couple of minutes what it may take lots of us years to realize and actually comprehend when learning what it is to mix, great work.
Before the pandemic, I didn't know anything about recording, editing and mixing... A couple of months later, after watching your 100 presonus studio one tutorials and your mix together, I'm able to hear and fix some stuff I've never heard before. Keep on doing such a great job it's so helpful for people like me. A big thanks!!
Thanks for video. Totally agree, you gotta get that balance right from the start. I enjoy getting my mix buss going after. that. I like The Slate Tape plugin and Virtual console with a little EQ and Mixbuss compression. Once I get that right then I start mixing my individual tracks.
Great stuff, thank you! As someone starting recording in a DAW at 57, your advice is priceless. “Fly Me to the Moon”? You’re no “spring chicken” yourself 😉
I am really impressed with your videos, thank you so much. My friend Akoustic Looper told me about you. We have done a project together and we’ve been friends for a ton of years.
So, I was looking around on YT for advice on Mixing. The top page opens with "Top 10 ways I mix" and so on and so on. Then I see your "4 Rules of Mixing" and I think to myself "How good can it be?". One way to find out is to Do It. So, I will. Thx.
Rule 3 mostly, what if the tracks are poorly recorded ? It's going to be much easier to work on good tracks then crapy ones so the method won't be exactly the same in my opinion.
As a beginner it seems daunting with all the options one can use to mix a song. Box 1 and box 4 seemed logical to me before watching your video; but not box 2 & 3. Thanks for your help!
I understand about not using plugins like eq or comp. while level/pan mixing, but what about plugins such as room or amp simulators that have a large impact on the source sound? I would think that level mixing is easier with these effects on. Great info. in the video!
Great Video, especially #3 just learned that technique from G-Rex and Hekler putting compressors, etc. on channels for sends instead of individual channels
Amazing video Joe - Just mixed a song with 47 tracks - spent time on the static mix - bus compression and EQ - amazing. (And a few Ben Holmes tricks!!) Thanks for sharing your knowledge
Can someone help me understand rule #2 a bit better as a beginner at this stuff. Does this rule apply to the plugins that you use to create a certain character to a sound? For example if I want my bass to have distortion and I have created it with a plugin, does he mean that I should remove the distortion while in the early stages of mixing, or should I consider it as a part of the sound that i am going to mix? Hopefully the question makes sense
Rule 1a: Subtractive editing. Do you really need those power chords throughout the entirety of the song? Etc...etc. Rule 2a: Leave all the mix faders in their nominal positions and adjust the levels of the clips manually. Vocal too soft in the chorus? Take the scalpel icon, "cut the tape" prior to the start of the chorus and again at the end of the chorus and then raise the gain. Its conceivable that your static mix ends up having a straight row of faders if you do surgical editing first. Avoid the notion that you can just use automation down the track. Get your static mix as close as possible by adjusting individual clips (and parts thereof). And remember, the more plugins you use, the harder your computer's processor has to work and there may come a point where you exceed its available power and you get nasty glitches and/or drop outs.
4 is so important i was listening to music and i noticed while i liked the grove i was clenching my jaw in pain unconsciously. Turns out there were very high treble peaks in every song i listened too due to my poorly tuned headphones i changed headphones and the problem went away. Your body will tell you when something is wrong. Fyi the headphones are nice but i had to mod them to filter the access treble from the drivers. They are beyerdynamic tygr 300 r
Hey guys im just starting out so i have a question , when joe is talking about buss And the buss have reverb plugins and reverb comes in many different approach So do we need a separate buss on it or just use that one reverb buss together as it ... Im a newbie and i dont speak english That often 😂
If only this video had been posted on 2016... It would have saved me so much time, and energy. It is so crazy how most beginners, tend to overmix, because they are compensating for a lack of skill/knowledge! Music is a feeling so that last rule is amazing ! And yeah sometimes this complicated work that we do can be simple! Stop overcompensating, and keep the feelings!
Another fantastic video, Joe! Kinda off topic, but I have to ask...what app are you using for your drawing? I've been trying to track it down for a few weeks now with no luck!
