I just turned 51 and have had my first Baker's cyst 10 years ago. I first noticed them when I moved to a new home which had hard wood floors. Within a few weeks of moving in and walking on the hard wood I had my first bakers cyst. I didn't even know I had a lump on the back of my knee until my fiance noticed it. It was huge! At the time I wasn't sure what it was but looked online and self diagnosed the issue. It went on for several days / weeks and it would not go away. It was only in my left knee. I started to wear slippers with cushioning to see if it would help. And it did!!! I now wear slippers at all times when on hard wood floors. If I remove the slippers only for 10 minutes my knee pain will come back and I will have another cyst. The best thing you can do is wear shoes or slippers with as much cushioning as you can. If you don't notice any improvement try another pair. Do not use just rubber like crocks because it does not help. You need slippers that are like walking shows for support. I would imagine if you have hip pain this might help as well. Needless to say 10 years later so long as I keep wearing my slippers and use good shoes I have been able to keep them away. But I am not kidding, if I take them off, within 10 minutes of walking on hard wood floors I will have bad pain and a lump will start. Please pass this along to anyone who has baker's cysts!

Thank you for sharing your experience. I have been wearing clogs for over 10 years walking on hard floor. I have had baker cysts on both my knees for over a year. I will go get a pair of Skechers slippers to see if that helps. Thanks again.

I hate soft shoes cause my ankles are not in a good position in them. Probably should look into proper pads for inside the shoes/slippers

You need good support when it comes to foot wear. Please take what this commenter says with a grain of salt. ALWAYS get medical advice because you need proper diagnosis. And proper advice. Yes it’s ok to see what others do with theirs to see what helps them, but remember, what helps them may not help you.

My Baker Cyst burst a week ago. The pain was horrible!! My orthopedic told me not to use crutches to get around in case of falling. So ordered me a walker. I only walk to do necessary things. Sitting too long hurts my back. lol...I have been doing the tailgate swings, toe raises, and heal lifts you suggested. My quads are strong, now have to tighten up my glutes. Thanks for the great videos.

Thank you so much! I had a Baker's cyst apparently burst after a few hrs of climbing up and down a ladder, causing blood to pool in my foot and bruising above my knee that developed a few days later and extreme calf pain and occasional hamstring pain. GP sent me for an MRI then to ortho surgeon who gave me no help and said to keep up my walking and see him again in 6 wks. I'm 75. Im so gladI found your videos!

I’m so glad I came across this video. I had recently been to the doctor for knee pain. I had no lump and only a bone spur appeared on X-ray. I was given a script for physical therapy for a ‘strained’ knee. That same night, before I’d had a chance to make a PT appointment, I had a popping in my knee that caused severe pain and left me unable to put any weight on that knee. ER X-rays only confirmed no fractures. When I was able to get another appointment at the doctor’s office (with a PA) 3 days later I was told (without further exam or imaging) that the doctor I had seen now thought I had a ruptured Bakers Cyst-without even explaining what it was. I was given an Rx for steroids and told to see a physical therapist. It’s good to know about the walking as my cardiologist has me on a daily cardio level walking routine that he’d recently told me to increase in length and intensity which I’ve been trying to do. I’m glad to have the information from this video before I visit the PT.

Wow, great information! I never knew I had a Baker's cyst until it ruptured and I went to the ER. I am a retired OT and have seen Baker's cysts in elderly patients, but they were very large. I am an avid cyclist, but the past several years I have noticed stiffness and limited ROM in my knees, cannot do the Child's pose in yoga or sit back on my heels when kneeling. This year I had bunion surgeries, 5 months apart, that prevented me from cycling. On a recent 2 mile walk, I had increased left knee pain that progressed. Then one day I felt a POP at the back of my knee and went to the ER where the PA said "do you know that you have a Baker's cyst?" I am wearing a knee brace, using crutches to offset pressure and weight. Have follow up appt with PCP tomorrow. I especially appreciate your recommendation on balancing muscle strength by increasing glute strength. Makes sense. Will definitely watch more of your videos. Thank you!

wow - this is an eye opener for me. I was doing quad exercises all the time in my gym session having tiny baker cyst diagnosed and my PT gave me pistol squat as well. Damn!! A few days back, during leg extension I felt pains resurfacing and the next day too and I kept wondering why knees are not getting better over time. Jeez!! From now on, no more quad strengthening. Thank you for sharing!

Finally some helpful advice! I just discovered I have a Baker’s Cyst behind my left knee. (Actually think I have the condition with both knees) I was doing a lot of walking for exercise and the one behind my left knee ruptured while out on a walk. Went to urgent care where they x-rayed my knee and told me could be bakers cyst or tendinitis and to follow up with orthopedic surgeon. Orthopedic surgeon prescribed an anti-inflammatory and physical therapy. After 4-5 weeks finding PT has helped some but more work to do. I did notice that my knee felt better after bike riding - hurt at start of the ride but at the end or next day it was feeling better. What you say makes sense about strengthening glutes to offset putting too much pressure on quad and knee: Definitely going to work on the exercises you recommended. Thank you!

Thank you so much for all the information! So useful!!! 🙌🏽🙌🏽 I am in my late twenties and have been to 2 x-rays and one MRI for the doctors to finally say why my one calf is swollen - mainly Bakers cyst. They have also told me that I have Joint hypermobility syndrome and a connective tissue disorder, which may have led to the cyst (but no definitive opinion was stated) I’m kind of desperate as the doctors didn’t really tell me what to do but to wait for 6months for the next checkup and their main point was that it is absolutely normal for the one calf to be almost twice the other (smth I haven’t notice and wasn’t true for almost 30 years…) Could you please tell me if the exercises in the video are good for me and what else could I do? Thank you so much in advance!!!!!

Hi Doc. I have a knee problem since my childhood days. But have come a long way since then. 62 years now. Was advised by orthopedic surgeon to go for knee replacement. Watching your videos has made me determined not to. I do as many of your exercises that I can.Beginning of February 2022 went overseas and on the very first day overseas I fell on the knee that I have had problems with all these years. A very hard fall which led to heavy swelling on my knees and bruises. I thought that was end of my holiday which just started. This was in Dubai. But it was a miracle and I strongly believe that God was right there to protect me. Using wet towels I managed to bring the swelling down. Also had blood clots. I did the rest of my holidays thankfully. Home now after 3 weeks. I have this stiffness on my right knee in the inner side which was still there before my fall. It seems there is a bone spur formed there. And painful when I put pressure on it. How can I treat this problem. 🙏

Thanks for this video. It was definitely helpful to identify my knee issue. Due to swelling, as it’s been going in now for over 6 weeks, it has clearly caused issues in the back of my calf. Any suggestions on exercises for this that won’t make my primary issue worse? Because this has been going in for so long I recognize it’s caused other issues in my leg. The back muscles above my knee has a knot as well. What a mess, it’s definitely affected my quality of life. I really appreciate your video and your approach

So do you recommend against squats for those attempting to put on muscle in preparation for aging but likely to get knee arthritis (in family)? This is one of the big 3 important weighted exercises. Is there a way to strengthen and prepare the knee to be able to do squats while aging?

I hope it is, I am going to go back to my yoga classes - Bikram as well - all they do it strengthening ham string. I had never had knee issues when I used to do yoga. During covid I replaced with walking , often with heavy grocery bags and laptops etc. Nothing good came out of it. Yoga is very good for knees and the back .

I imagine that squats are a definate no no .. Great foer the glutes but it also develops quads .. please advise as I see lots of benefits but not if I aggrevate the swelling behind my left knee ( still waiting for ultrasound) I've only found your amazing site and I'm so pleased to have you on my side .. its been 6 weeks since my injury

Hey @demelzascurves, squats can be good for you at the right time. You'll have to first make sure you can use your glutes really well. Then you'll have to see if you have enough glute strength to make your way down without allowing your quads to take over. My work requires a lot of standing and walking which can be painful at times and I do have baker s cyst and had injection done a year and half ago but it grew back a month later and was referred to a specialist but since then have been on waiting list to see him. I do use some cream and few exercises to help. While not working, I sit as much as I can but at the same time do move around in between. Also, I put up my feet to help elevate the legs/knees. Any other suggestions you can give me to help while I wait to see the specialist? Thank you

@karenstewart1773 Год назад
Good advice. My doctors just aspirated the cyst a year or two ago. Nothing changed. So I found the Oslo patch online and use them every night. The patch pulls out some fluid each night and the cyst has been shrinking. I will now add the glute exercises to help strengthen and heal the arthritis or meniscus tear. Should I get an MRI to see the underlying problem?

I didn't have any pain and it seemed that the backers cyst was almost gone. Then at physical therapy (1) Day 1 she released my IT band and did manual therapy. I was in so much pain the next two days. Thank God for the pool. (2) Day 2 at Physical therapy the trainer showed me how to do foam rolling because I have tight it bands from running and squats lunges. After foam rolling the calf I started rolling the back of my knee. The trainer kept walking away and I didn't realize that I shouldn't have done that. The next few days the back of my knee has been so irritated, except for when I am exercising or in the pool. The backers cyst on the back of my knee is still irritated and got bigger. I have been using both ice and heat on it. The backers cyst has gotten bigger how can I get rid of it naturally for good? Does it protect injuries ( ( torn meniscus) on the inside of the knee? I cancelled my next PT appointment because I have been in pain after each session. I have only had 2 sessions.

David~ I sent over this video over to Amanda, she refused to even look at it. I had an appointment with another colleague of hers who’s been doing PT for 40 years. I tried to explain your reasoning for not doing quads. His answer “ I’ve been doing this for 40 years…blah, blah, blah.” Completely shut me down, with the exception of what you said about the stationery bicycle. I don’t see how anyone can be so stuck in their ego that they’re not even open to watching a 12:55 video that would help so many people. I’m thinking of trying to get an appointment with the head PT and taking in my ipad and getting him to watch it. Do you have any suggestions about how to get these people to listen. I need them because I’m old and the exercises are very difficult and I do need guidance in how to do them correctly. My knees started getting worse from the first appointment and continued getting worse with each appt. I stopped going for 2 weeks and found your posting! Was so excited, but can’t get anyone to listen, so have stopped again.

I have advanced bilateral osteoarthritis in both knees and just developed a huge bakers cyst on the back of my right knee after doing a lot of swimming and stair climbing. My knee is stiff and painful and I'm extremely depressed. Is it safe to do gentle swimming? And if so, what kind of swimming strokes would you recommend?
@epmanualphysicaltherapy
@epmanualphysicaltherapy Год назад
Hey Danelle Great question!! Swimming can be great for knee arthritis as long as you are effectively using your glutes. There is not a specific stroke that makes knee OA better, as long as you are using your glutes. Glutes are key to offloading pressure inside the knee that feeds knee arthritis. Getting in the water can definitely help with taking pressure off while you're in the water.

I have a question, my physical therapist told me that I have a cyst in my calf, is it ok if I strengthen my calf muscles with exercises like calf raises? and also is it okay if I strengthen the hamstrings that are tight?
@karenkaltsas1008
@karenkaltsas1008 Год назад
I developed a baker cyst after my total knee replacement. Part of my physical therapy is actually strengthening my quads. However, I do ride a stationary bike and outdoor bike. I’m not sure how to strengthen my legs without strengthening my quads, which is part of the physical therapy. However, my cyst seems to be dissipating somewhat. I will try the glute exercises and dangling my feet to try to relieve the cyst.

Consider doing hamstring exercises, I found the prone hamstring curl machine at the gym sorted my bakers cyst. I had one for 2 years in my twenties. When I first tried the machine I was surprised that I struggled with a very very low weight. You can then track your progression up the weights and compare with your quad strength. I think the recommended ratio is hamstrings should have 75% of quad strength. I found the seated hamstring curls quite painful so stuck with the prone (lying on front) machine. Not all gyms have them. I also did a lot of stationary cycling and increasing distance/resistance. It took some perseverance due to repeated swelling but it eventually worked, also plenty of stretching. Doctors advised me to rest repeatedly for months and months, to the point I felt guilty doing anything. When finally referred to a physio (uk) they told me to do exercises and build it up. Basically the opposite. I have found a steady walk can help loosen it up. I have recently started doing hip strengthening too, partly as I have been able to play sports which are quite intense on the joints.

What if MRI showed a tear in the meniscus; Will it heal itself? What about artifact degeneration of the ACL or a partial tear? I don't want to do surgery either. For anything. I have a lot of knee problem right now septated Baker cyst & ganglion cyst into proximal thigh and a lot of debris. 20 years ago car accident I was told I had a complete tear of the PCL and did physical therapy completely healed. But current MRI shows intact PCL???

Have you ever heard of clients getting baker cyst that rupture and dissect into the calf and the cyst that is in the calf has a lot of fibrous tissue?
@epmanualphysicaltherapy
@epmanualphysicaltherapy 2 года назад
Hey Shay! This is Dr. David's comment moderator. Yes, we see people with ruptured Baker's Cysts here in the clinic. It's sign that you've progressed your knee problem quite a bit. The cyst will rupture once the joint capsule cannot hold the extra fluid anymore. You've still got a muscle imbalance and it's just a matter of time before the next problem comes on. It might be arthritis or a meniscus tear or something else. Have you heard of our 28 Day Knee Health & Wellness Boost Program? This program would be the right thing for you to do next to help your knee out. It's a 100% online and on-demand program for improving knee health. It's packed with exercises, advice and coaching from Dr. David. You can learn more about it here: www.epmanualphysicaltherapy.com/knee-health
