Welcome to my channel: / stanshappyhour .
This is Episode 4 of our antidote to lockdown, BarkLife. Join us on what turned out to be a beautiful but precarious walk around the Clifton Gorge in Bristol - and the discovery of an amazing bench plaque.
I used to be an 80s music popstar, now I'm a waterways enthusiast, with a thing for canal boats, canal boat holidays, canal walks, river walks and discovering the gorgeous English countryside.
Thirty years ago, I was in the band The Housemartins, with my talented friends Paul Heaton, Norman Cook (aka Fatboy Slim) and Hugh Whittaker. We had chart success with songs like Happy Hour, Caravan of Love, Build and Me And The Farmer.
But that was then. These days, my happy hours consist of family time - and making films about the UK's amazing waterways. Either on foot or at the tiller of a narrowboat. I love canals, canal boats and canal boat holidays, making films about my time on or near the water. I also love to take English countryside walks alongside rivers and canals.
Usually with my mini schnauzer Mabel and new havanese puppy Rufus. I talk sometimes, Mabel and Rufus don't. But we always have fun and we'd love you to join us - just hit the SUBSCRIBE button (please!)

These videos have such fascinating things that are seen only in passing, things that most people wouldn't even notice, such as the abandoned train tunnel. Centuries of history, reclaimed by nature, soon to disappear forever! Thanks as always, Stan!

Wot?! Not a park?! I want my shilling back! However it's GORGE-ous! Again Mike sums it up; "Is there a wrong way?" A bit of foreshadowing to the underwear in the undergrowth.

Quite agree - Mike has untapped depths. (don't think it was his underwear, mind. Which is a good thing)

Wowsers..!! Another fab walk, Stan, Mike, Mabel and Rufus. I haven't walked the side of the Avon Gorge bit, but have walked by the Observatory, the bridge and down the 'zig zag' path. I haven't walked up it, as of yet. I will have a go, next week. I detest the noise of the traffic along that road; when I'm walking on t'other side, and walk up through Leigh Woods, the noise slowly disappears and I can hear the birds. Bliss. Absolute bliss. Walking under the bridge is fantastic as well. I did try to emulate it in some art that I did (from memory). Seeing as I do not carry my phone when walking (quite perilous at times; it felt like I was on the edge of the earth last year, when exploring Leigh Woods - I could hear the roar of the traffic, and gravity was pulling me down, when I was near the edge of the cliffs!). I need to explore those tunnels, when we all can, again! 😄

Thanks Stan and Mike! The view from the Observatory is beautiful (and Scott's music is the perfect accompaniment). Seeing some of the very commonplace but interesting parts of the walk is amazing - the rock slide, old railway tunnel - and I do like a good bench marker. Dr. Wright's certainly has a lovely view of the suspension bridge, especially on such a bright, sunny day. I'm sure that makes him as happy as anyone who is lucky enough to have a rest there.

Brilliant video and information. I did not know the path down, but everything else was very familiar. The opposite side of the gorge is well worth a visit with a walk from Leigh Woods down through Nightingale valley, to the river, or just the numerous walks through the woods. Please keep these videos coming. Steve Williamson

I’ve never read that bench plaque before! There’s a very funny one in the small park at the end of birdcage walk that’s my favourite 🤩

The park by the ruins of the church? Or Victoria Square? Which ever it is, I'm putting it on the list of places to visit!

Looks like a great place to walk, fantastic views. I'd forgotten about the Zig Zag Path, walked part of it a few years ago. Thanks for the reminder!

'On one hand they're (cars) a bit annoying and smelly and noisy.' Right. And on the other hand? You've kind of left that open. I also would also like to know which cafe your favourite one is. Is it the observatory or the one you've actually got your coffee and sandwich? Your story about the gorilla had me laughing out loud.

The cars - you're right. I meant to add that they're smelly and noisy (bad), but also a sign that life is returning to sort of normal (good). As for my fave cafe - it was closed... sigh. Maybe next time
