In this video, Ableton Certified Trainer Ian Gallagher explains his 4 golden rules for selecting the best reference songs for your music. While the art and science of mixing and mastering is subjective and complicated, critically listening to other people’s music (i.e., reference songs) can help you quickly get the sound you want. But what songs should you use?
After years of trial and error, Ian has come up with these four tips to ensure you’re using the RIGHT reference tracks. In other words, tracks that help you get the best results for YOUR MUSIC.
So, before you start grabbing random reference tracks, make sure you’re considering the key parameters. In particular, Ian’s 4 tips cover Quality, Genre/Era, Song Popularity, and Using Songs You Love.

It's all fine, but! How i can understand a track is good made in audio without listening it in a studio, meanwhile somebody explain why is good? In home acoustix we can listen tons of tracks that sounds "well". References are still a dark forest for me. Could be cool have 2-3 tracks per genre: neurofunk, break beat, hip-hop, bass house/complextro, dubstep, techno etc., tracks you can council to use like a references and expalin why are good/great.

It's definitely good to select a few top references for each genre you work in. As for the studio thing, if you have non-ideal acoustics in your space then headphones can be a good referencing point. Planar magnetic headphones are really good.

Ian I wanted to know is it professional to listen to a reference without using a graph within my DAW? I hope I am explaining myself correctly. A plugin to see where the music is going is what I am saying.

Sure. You don't always need to be using the visual tools when analyzing a reference. They're just helpful as an addition, especially if you want to look at what frequencies are peaking at what values.
