Great video... as usual. I'd like to add one more small addition to the fertilization tip, and that's soil cover. My friend planted two mango trees at the same time, he then added soil cover to just one of them, (leaves, mulch, cut grass...), and planted Nitrogen fixing plants next to it. Both trees were fertilized and watered the same. The result: the tree that had soil cover and natural Nitrogen fixation grew almost twice as fast, and looked visibly healthier than the other one. From my own experience in the garden, soil cover makes a big difference. Soil cover also saves water by reducing evaporation, and promotes healthy bacterial and fungal growth in the soil, which helps convert the nutrients in it into forms that are accessible to the plant, i.e.- improving the tree's nutrition. The avocado farmers in our area mulch after pruning the trees, so the pruned branches and leaves become soil cover, and later break down to become compost.
we leave all the organic material under our trees. That soil has been building up for decades. when I mow my rows I always aim the mower to throw towards the trees too.
Not only are you an awesome teacher, but your sense of humor is GREAT! The brain learns better when humor is involved. Thanks for being such a great guy! Krista
I think God has created this gentleman for a special purpose. I wish you long life my brother. Keep teaching the world especially for those who want to learn the basics in planting and producing fruits of all kinds. You doing a great job and also making a name for yourself.
I’m so pumped I keep finding little babies on my wurtz for the first time. I’m going try the shaking method as it’s still full of flowers. Great video! Also your grove looks great. You must have been working hard!

Informative clip. I wanna give the Nasa perspective on sunlight though. According to them, it takes 8.3 min for sunlight to travel from the surface of the sun to the surface of the earth. And 10 to 170 thousand years for a photon to travel from the core of the sun to the surface of the sun.
OMG. You are so funny. I enjoyed your video. Aside from being funny it was a very educational video. I am in Puerto Rico where plants grow just by asking them to. I live out in the country and i love it. I planted an avocado tree and was wondering if I can somehow get it to produce faster without grafting it so I looked it up on RU-vid and that’s how I ended up on your channel. I must say, yours was the most educational and most entertaining. God bless and keep up the awesome work.
I'm in Puerto Rico z I just cut down a 25 foot tall avocado tree likely grown by seed that has never produced fruit. I bought a grafted one to replace it. It's behind the house and gets lots of shade until it reaches the 20 feet height were The sun is not blocked
12 15 feet apart?! I plant about 6 feet apart. I prune them down and around to 6 to 8 feet max. But they are smaller trees like Gem (A) Sharwil,(B) Little Cado (A and/or B).Mexicola (A) Also i'm growing where they aren't supposed to grow. North California, really north not just By Area north, in a micro climate zone 9A.
I Loved this video, Great instruction Thank you❤ I'm in zone 7b. I started 2 trees from seed that were doing great until i transplanted them into a bigger pot. Their leaves dried up except 1 & they were closer together, but i moved them a bit apart in the L 19:05 arger pot. I read they should be topped out so they would branch out more so i cut them both. They are both a couple yrs old also. Do you think they will still live?
Thank you for your advise. I have a Haas tree that produces very small fruit. I understande the principle of grafting, but want to graft to produce larger fruit, maybe a Simmons Variety. I dont kniow existing "A" and "B" of the Haas yet. How do I get the right Scion, bud wood tree when I dont know the existing rootstock? I'm ready to purchase soon cool;er weather started today.
We bought a Hass avocado from home depot in ocala fl. about 3' . Trying calling Costa farms as that's where tge get there fruit plants Costa won't answee/or return my voice mail I leave. .tag just says Hass . Is it A or a B plant or does it mater? As it also said self pollinating. Limited space here as I also have e 6 garden boxes
Hass is flowering type A. All avocados are capable of self pollination but they're not very good at it. This vid explains in detail: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Sgm-7wHT8K0.htmlsi=8naIkX5F05QQGTZl
Hi. Interesting video. The tip of the avocado tree leaves are brown, but new leaves are green. What should I do? It is 3 years old, when to expect fruits. I am in Egypt and spring is starting
My young indoor avocado trees are in an east-facing window and really suffer when they have direct sunlight for more than 1-2 hours, the leaves get really limp, soft, and droopy (and any new shoots that were pointing upwards will be pointing downwards). This is very at odds with the information in this video, so what's going wrong? If I move the trees out of the direct sunlight they recover in about half an hour or so, so it's clear there's an issue. Do they get too hot without the wind from outdoors?
Thank you Courtney. I've tried to do some vids on my transition from a corporate VP to a farmer with some career tips and stuff but they didn't get much traction. 😢. 😁
How do type a or type b know what day it is? Even or odds? And if the same flower opens male then female wouldn’t the pollen be stuck right there from day before especially if it isn’t windy?
As to how they know when to open and on what day much of that remains a mystery. To your second point about pollen from the day before yes that happens and self pollination occurs.
I’m really loving your videos bud but why so much difference of opinion on sunlight . Many folks state that young avocados don’t like direct sunlight which can burn them out they prefer to be close to other trees which will also protect them from winds . What’s your take bud ?
Hi Rui, You are right. There's a lot of difference of opinion on a lot of facets of fruit tree cultivation. I'm friends with two of the biggest farmers in my area...guys who've been in the business 50 years and even they differ in opinion on certain things. Regarding sunlight of everything I grow avocados are most tolerant of direct sunlight but I like to keep them in a shade house until the get a few feet high then I move them to the outside nursery. When the shade house is full I have a shady spot underneath some banana trees. That said as long as you water it an avocado tree will grow in full sunlight.
Love the no frills, cut the crap, way you talk. It should be a Google translate for legalese on documents they keep adding zeros to that every president blindly signs.
Where do you grow? Are you hiring? That in my eyes would be a dream job, growing abundant fruit. Also, do you graft more than one kind of avocado on a single tree so that it bears fruit throughout the year?
Matter does not get created this way, it is because of the fecundated female ovary around which the fruit in which the seed is placed needs to create this layer of fruit. But it is more complicated. Here we do not have a creation of matter but the development of a fruit which has not much to do with nuclear physics. But for simplicity it is also acceptable to put it as you did. May the Lord bless and keep you.
The conversion of the energy of a photon to matter and then back to energy when I eat an avocado made me realize that I'm a a nuclear reactor! Just kidding. Love your enthusiasm!
Even if I have both a type a and type b tree, do I need to worry about them flowering at the same time of year? If an A type flowers in January and B type in May, then that doesn't help me, right?
I dont know if its the same all round the globe but here they all flower for 6-8 weeks in January and Feb so the flowering times overlap. If you have trees who's flowering time don't overlap then they won't be able to pollinate each other.
Hey..thanks for all the coaching..great stuff...i have a question that might not be directly related to avocados but fruits and transport in general.. In the past yrs the fruitfarmers put pectine on the citrus and other fruits...it kills the pores..you cann use the peel no more..and during transit they cook inside instead of freezing what they probably trying to avoid during the trip. Is this true is it to keep them ok?! I noticed that i often buy fruits that seem to be ok but the moment i put them on my fruit bowl in the kitchen to rest till consuming them, they fall apart overnight..often they colour the fruits..pick them all way too easy..like mangos, pineapples, bananas and papayas or citrus too...i think they kill the fruit the moment they do that..putting it in a pectine or parafine bath even..i don't know what it is.. Be excuse it doesn't rise of and the quality is not good anymore..they do are way too expensive to m as me as uch uneatable fruits..but it all countries all farms seem to do this procedure..can you tell something about this whole process..pro's and cons and why you don't cover them up your avocados in mean. If you buy those super expensive citronella from Italy, they come in normal packages too..not covered with shit..i think it's stupidity what they are doing..
Simone, I don't know anything about citrus but I know especially with imported fruit there's a lot of tricks to slow and then speed ripening which has a detrimental effect on the taste.
Is it ok to water from the bottom of a pot... Every time the saucer looks dry I put a couple inches of water in. Sometimes that is every day. Sometimes it every couple of days. If I leave the saucer dry for more than a day it starts to wilt.
I don't know. I never tried that. I like to keep all the soil damp so I imagine it would stay dry up top if only fill the saucer. try it and see how it goes.
Great 👌 video very informative just subscribed been watching but never sub how do you get a tree to food after 8 years if it hasn't it's a single tree 🤔
Thank you for subscribing, I appreciate the support. Avocado trees are capable of self pollination. some of the flowers have female organs present during their male phase, the wind shakes pollen loose and the tree self pollinates.
Love the video supwr funny. I live in Riverside Ca zone 9b, i have lost 3 young avocado trees in the summer in the past. The only way i have been able to keep new trees alive is by using shade cloth, they are now about 7 feet tall each. From your video i should not have shade, what would be the best way to care without shade cloth? (I have a nabal and a reed) @sleepylizard
if you have issues with sun damage you might try some of the varieties that do well in florida. Choquette, Monroe, Pollock, Oro Negro, Tonnage, Berneker
it's all supply and demand. We grow fruit today that sells for less per pound than in the 80s in spite of inflation simply because supply outpaced demand.
I have some a mexicola grande tree and it has flowers and they are falling off alot and there's Argentina ants on the flowers are they hurting the tree
God day Mr. Sleepy Lizard. I have a mango tree near an avocado tree. It seems the leaves and branches from the avocado tree is dying from being too close to the mango tree. Do you know what is happening, and do you know what i can do to stop this. Both trees are big so its not easy to relocate the mango tree, so id really like to find a different solution. God bless and thank you from Da Moon
God day Sleepy Lizard, sorry for the late reply. they are 8.5 feet apart. i thought they would just cross branches when i planted them.. i will prune them and let you know. God bless and thank you @@SleepyLizard
If you are in Western Australia where high phosphate (> 2%) are banned .... make your own bonemeal. It's pretty easy, and gives you an excuse to make a pot of bone broth.
@@SleepyLizard Make a pot of bone broth, then clean and bake the bones. Once they are browned and brittle, you crush them in a canvas bag with a hammer and then you can blend them to a powder (or manually crush them in a mortar and pestle). You will then have bonemeal to spread around your garden.
@@SleepyLizard Thanks a lot, we are hoping for a good production this year in the highlands of the Great Rift Valley in Kenya. The trees are now 4 years old Hass and Fuerte. We have only applied manure from cow dung and relying on rain water. I have learnt a lot from your video as a first time farmer.
Love this video! You know your avocado trees. I can easily start a tree from the seeds, but by the time they are 3yrs old, they die ....what in the heck am I doing wrong?
No I haven't. I have to bring them inside in winter, I live in east Tn. It gets cold in winter, maybe that is the problem. Thanks for the reply.@@SleepyLizard
Di you ever white wash the bark to protected them from the sun we in the Caribbean do do care about white wash or pruning trees are tapp an out of shape pack nutrients etc
Jeez Tom, you wouldve been a GREAT science teacher! The Monroe and Simmonds tree i bought last year are both doing REALLY well thanks to your advice and help! Ill send you a photo update soon. From Phoenix, AZ
Every so often I will meet someone when talking about the enormity of food in the plant kingdom which comes down to comparing the banana to the avocado. They will say they love bananas but hate avocadoes. What?
one thing I've learned from selling food is everybody has their own preference...even within avocados some people might love one variety and hate another
Question I have an avocado tree that 2 main branches grew up from the pit, can I split that to make 2 trees? Or will that kill both? I need to prune the top why I’m watching video to learn how but here’s a picture if I can figure out how.
Love your garden humor. Thank you so much for your invaluable advice. Question: I have a Zutano, 2 yrs old, Fuerte 9 YO, The Fuerte has never given any fruit and barely flowers. The Zutano had a lot of flowers this year but no fruit. Can you please advise when, in Central Coast California, I am supposed to fertilize. I hear so many differing opinions. I have been fertilizing since February. This year the weather has been really weird, rain and now endless days of no sun and no bees! Also, please do a video, if you haven't already, showing the pruning process. Thanks so much.
Hi Alessandra, you have two very tasty varieties there. the Zutano can take a half pound of 6-6-6 fertilizer every 60 days until it gets fruit then switch to 8-3-9. The Fuerte can take 5lbs of 6-6-6 In September and 5lbs of 8-3-9 in April. I will do a vid on pruning.
Oh no!!! I bought 9-9-9 instead... what should I ... oh... wait... nevermind. In all seriousness now, how are the rows of trees positioned in your farm? N to S or E to W for maximum sun exposure?
Hello there bud I will like to have a conversación with you if u don't mind I have a few questions but don't know if u would like to talk about what I can do sense I need something smaller sense I stay in north carolina and will like to grow some mangoes but maybe u and I can talk about what I can grow here
I would like to see what kind of mango tree/ bush I could grow in sanford nc I want something that I could keep small but yet still get fruit I will be keeping it in a greenhouse on winter and out of it on summer
@@SleepyLizard man a lil avocado tree found me yesterday. It is about 5’ tall. Brought it home. Im gonna demo the garage and plant it there. 🤣 Question, how can i tell what variety is it, i didn’t even ask, i should’ve i know. Anyhow how to ID It episode will be great. Thanks man, i really enjoy watching your video last night first for me. Have a great day.
@@abrahamu5544 Abraham, congratulations on the tree. My condolences on the garage. Here's a vid on how to ID your type of avocado: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gF5W4N2QWO4.html
I acquired a really young tree, the leaves are drooping and 1 leaf is browning on the outside. It is in a pot, with holes for drainage, is it in shock from moving and transplanting it? It has been 2 weeks
@SleepyLizard Thank you for your response, I checked the soil, and it's not moist or damp after last watering. I cover with rain water every 3 days but it drains, in a covered area with about 4 hrs direct sun daily
