Today was my second time taking a lesson with the guys at Adventure Air. Peter and Henry are great instructors. My lesson with Henry this week was very relaxed, very informative and a lot of fun. I felt a lot more comfortable flying.

I just discovered gyros after seeing one in my local aeronautical university, someone told me it was a helicopter! It didn’t look like one at all so I searched it and now I’m obsessed. I think this is my dream! Working with gyros, flying them and learning all about them, maybe even building them.

You know, I had a heated debate with someone here a few days ago. I dont care if gyrocopter is copywrited. The plane of this aircraft is a gyroscopically balanced rotor, that makes it a gyro copter. Nothing about this is an airplane. Nothing.
@seikibrian8641
@seikibrian8641 Год назад
It's called a gyroplane by the US FAA, but an autogyro or autogiro in most of the world. Aerodynamically, it has more in common with a fixed-wing aircraft than it does with a helicopter, so genericizing "gyrocopter" is not as logical as you seem to believe.

People like this guy makes autogyro flying a pleasure.I don't know why my city won't consider a fully enclosed gyroplane for police duties. I have read that gyros can be as quiet as a helicopter, cost 𝐦𝐮𝐜𝐡 less to buy, even after adding special stuff like FLIR, and have 𝐦𝐮𝐜𝐡 lower maintenance costs. The helicopter mafia must be behind gyros being muscled out.
@AdventureAir
@AdventureAir Год назад
Interesting that you would bring that up! Henry just got back from Texas where he and the AutoGyro team presented their models to various law enforcement agencies like the Texas Rangers, CBP, and smaller municipalities. They also fired rifles from the gyros while using brass catchers. Operational cost is only about $60.00 an hour. Stay tuned for our next video which will include footage from that meetup.
@paulplack490
@paulplack490 Год назад
Law enforcement agencies are reluctant to buy an aircraft that can't land and take off again from a spot on a highway. Some agencies have used them for aerial patrol. Here in Salt Lake City, a gyro was used for security patrols during the 2002 Winter Olympics.

Great video, it was a pleasure to watch and I learned a lot. As I also have an interest in powered parachutes, I was wondering which you would consider the safest? Considering a powered parachute is always under canopy and it can also be fitted with a ballistic reserve chute for emergencies, do you think a gyroplane would be safer in an 'engine out' or bird strike scenario?

They are referred to as gyroprops in some areas of Canada and UK. I watched the evolution of a paraglider into a gyroprop week after week as the pilot kept making modifications to the final gyroprop. He flew his paramotor glider every week with a different modification. I would go out and watch the pilots fly every week. One day he showed up with no air foil and a rotor mounted instead. That was the final gyroprop configuration. I overheard he had plans to put better instruments in it but the gyroprop was finished. I rather wish I could have talked to him.

I had no idea it could fly without any forward motion. Changes my opinion about their safety. This was a great and highly informative video!! Out of curiosity, as you were descending vertically over the runway, why did you need to lower the nose and raise the speed to 60mph? You didn't have to, did you? Was it just to be further down the runway to be considerate of planes behind you?
@AdventureAir
@AdventureAir Год назад
It's good practice to maintain forward airspeed when landing to stay in the height/velocity curve, as well as maintain rudder authority when landing. During an emergency, if you had to land in a confined area, you could do so without the forward airspeed.
@ayokay123

@moteroargentino7944
@moteroargentino7944 Год назад
So does a plane, as long as there's airflow over their wings. But since they're fixed, the whole aircraft has to remain in motion at a reasonable speed to generate lift, be either by it's own power or trading altitude for speed. Gyroplanes are rotating wings aircraft, so as long as the rotors keep spinning, there's airflow and lift regardless of the movement of the aircraft. But obviously it will still descend if not powered.
@DFX2KX
@DFX2KX Год назад
I'm pretty sure Gryoplanes *CAN* stall if you abuse them enough and let the rotor RPM drop too rapidly. But I think that mostly applies to certain ultralight gyros that where apparently particularly sensitive in that regard. If it happens you're in serious trouble because it might take a few hundred feet to get the rotor flying again.

No one has built one large enough for medivac purposes. Generally there is a pilot, copilot/flight nurse and flight doctor.. then the patient. Size would be the restricting factor. The Bensen was a very early design. It had serious faults. Almost no functional horizontal stabalizer. A twitchy engine. A early two stroke 4 cylinder that failed often.. A thrust line that was to high. No prerotator Almost no pilot protection. It had an unrecoverable pitch over problem. Very little suspension so the rotor could have stability problems on take off. The nose wheel didn't caster so it got into trouble on landings where it wasn't pointed straight down the runway. And not much forgiveness on any landing. Short takeoffs were very dangerous. The engine was hand propped. But even with all the warts there were pilots who not only survived, they did well.

After WW2, vehicles with 1/2 tracks disappeared, advancements with suspension designs means it is either wheels or tracks. Gyros are the 1/2 tracks of the sky. From what I saw in the specs, small gyros needed about as much power as a regular helicopter , maybe even more in some cases, their performance is about the same and they cannot hover. Not all of them are equipped for VTOL but then helicopter are not always VTOL either, they often use runways. A Zenith 750 will use less runways than many choppers and can fly almost as slow as a gyro. The only area they beat out the choppers are cost to buy and to operate, because they do not have a powered rotor. That is why they are not more popular.
@vitordelima
@vitordelima Год назад
The whole point of them was affordability, manueverability, fault tolerance, stability and VTOL (which is present in many earlier models) to compete with helicopters but everything went to s***. Maybe they can hover with the same kind of device used for jump takeoffs (a form of VTOL), a low power pre-rotator, and stabilized by the control surfaces. Compound gyroplanes are very fast, simple compared to other aircraft and somewhat competitive with airplanes, but they also were memoryholed.

... We dont need no stinking Rotor blade tach,...when the blade disappears - ya got yer right RPM -ready to roll , keep it on the mains and throttle it ,she'll lift off ..... ....coming down , ya dont wanna lose the base approach rotor speed , jockey the throttle and drop the nose if'n ya need rotor speed . Easy peachy .

Here's an idea, why don't you make the music so loud in the beginning that you can't hear your narration? Oh, I'm sorry, I guess you already did that. 🥴
@AdventureAir
@AdventureAir Год назад
Hi, thanks for your comment! We're always trying to improve the quality of the videos and keep viewers engaged for the whole video. Sometimes between voicing in the video, without music it makes for slow watching. We're still trying and learning video editing and we are turning down the decibel level of the background music and using ducking against the narration so hopefully that helps. If you have more constructive criticism and new video ideas, we'd really like to hear them!

No offence, but I thought a gyro was kinda dumb being that it's not as good as a helli and not as good as a plane so why would you want one. But after watching this I can see why someone would want a gyro.
@AdventureAir
@AdventureAir Год назад
No offense taken! Gyros are very misunderstood as a whole because they fit in an obscure category. They're a rotor craft that flies like a plane. It has a much lower cost of ownership and operation in general and can fit the needs of a lot of people who want to fly. They're also a much less costly way of building hours for a rotor craft rating toward helicopters.

All of these positive comments must be friends. Really hard to understand or even at times to hear the narration because of that stupid background noise (music).

We really appreciate your constructive criticism and positive comments! While we have some followers that are familiar with us, most of these comments are from people we've never met. This happens to be our most popular video at the moment and is also one of our older videos. We didn't expect the attention this video would get and were still trying to figure out the format we wanted to use. It seems our main demographic wants to see more informational style videos and we've since started to move in that direction. If you watch some of our more recent videos, you'll see that we've adjusted to fit more of our viewers' interests. Thanks again for watching and we look forward to more of your comments!

What kind of license is required? You have to have a license now to fly a drone so knowing the F.A.A. they require something. I suppose next you will need a license to bungee jump.
@AdventureAir

A sport pilot license is all that is required. At least 20 hours of instruction, including 5 hours of solo flight. No medical needed.
