I just did it to a friend's tele and was expecting series to be much louder. I wired it bridge > neck and parallel is actually muddier than series. The opposite of what I expected.@@b.rodclark334

Can confirm, it pushes the amp quite a bit more. Especially if it's a tube amp turned up. Has more sustain as well. Really it almost sounds a bit 335 or varitone at times. I also added a mini toggle to flip the phase of the neck pickup. This adds 2 more tones. Arguably 3, as the neck pickup does sound different by itself when you flip the leads. It sounds more scooped one way, and sweeter the other. Despite being the same pickup, I'm not sure if it's because it's RWRP. Having played different teles, I do prefer a reverse wound neck when in middles (for noiselessness) and reversed back to normal when in the neck by itself Crazy what the hell can still do and it was Leo's first baby!

I have the Obsidian Wire 4-way module in my Tele - makes install so easy and sounds great. The series setting is the one I use most on my Tele now, works for anything I play. I also upgraded to the Custom Shop '51 Nocaster pickups when I put in the module.

Thanks. I wired my Tele up with a 4 way switch. The series sound is cool. Will almost pass for a humbucker like Dylan said. It's a good mod if you want to get different sounds out of your Tele. With my Tele, I find myself parked on the bridge pickup 95% of the time. It's that classic sound we've all come to love (or hate)!

hey Scott! the humbucker series sound is closer to a bridge humbucker sound or a neck humbucker sound? I mean, it's a good sound for high gain bridge humbucker stuff? or it's more like a jazzy neck humbucker sound?

I have 4 ways in every Tele I have owned. I wired mine to a schematic that had the 4 way position all the way forward, in front of the neck position. I like this because that and the neck is mostly where I play. I rarely use the bridge by itself. So in this wiring I would be switching past the bridge back and forth a lot. I also use the mid position way more than the bridge.

Yep… did that in my nephews new Squire 40th anniversary telecaster. Also put in the 250k CTS pots and orange drop cap. I had some Fender 62 custom shop pickups to throw in also. Awesome rig now. I’m doing a partscaster with the S1 switch ALA Baja 60’s Tele.

My Tele came with the 4way. I like to use the series setting when I'm playing with a 12 string. The 12 string being a little chimey, I can have a slightly different space. So, I would say the change can be worth the effort.

The series option is pretty nice to have! I don't use it a lot, but sometimes it's great to be able to get something a bit different from my Tele.

Good video. I put a 4 way switch in my Tele, but never end up using the in series setting. I end up on the bridge 80% of the time and neck 20%.

I have tried it, it's awesome. But also have a p/p for inversion of the electric poles of the neck-pickup. That is a unique sound in the serial position, but I don't recommend it in the parallel position, it's way too weak there.

I'm playing the exact same AVII in the same color now. But I put a Bigsby on it with AV Jazzmaster bridge (Bigsby bridge is terrible. Cool to hear the series mod. I just swapped the switch with my strat a few days ago and did out of phase and esquire mod. I was wondering why this was making funky noises in the out of phase position, but you answered it by showing how the cover becomes hot. Cool set!!

Hmm, Dyl didn't mention the control plate. Note to all home modders, the standard 3 way plate might not be able to accommodate the 4 way switch because of the throw length. Do your research folks before doing this mod yourselves. Modding is fun 🤘🤘

Keep hearing about the series parallel 4 way mod. Came up with a new 4 way wiring scheme. Basically modern wiring 3 way with a Esquire ish open bridge in position 1 in a HS tele. Think if I was going to go there on a SS tele, I would go the 5 way super switch route and add the out of phase mod as well.

Great video. I've recently switched to a Tele after 30+ years of being a strat guy. I wanted an Esquire but bought a Tele. I like it as is but am considering taking Neck PU off of tone control. I am curious if it would be possible to wire it like an Esquire but have the neck PU be a "dummy" coil. So that in position one the neck would be engaged to act as a humbucker. I know the stock pu wouldn't work.

Would you recommend to augment the volume pot's resistance in the 4th position up to 500K by adding a resistor to get more highs ?

I've since soldered it the standard way (250K) and I think it's ok on a Telecaster. The series position actually sounds quite similar to the parallel position but louder and a bit fatter. On a strat however, I think the series combinations could be better with higher pots (concentric pots or by adding resistors) but maybe not as high as 500K (to get the resonance peak right).

So I wired a switch to put individual humbucker coils in parallel rather than series. If I added another switch to put the two buckers in series with each other, would that open a portal?

Hey Dylan, can you show us a similar Telecaster mod but with the master tone knob turned into a push-pull instead of a 4 way? Where I live, a 4-way switch costs upwards of 1200 in my currency. Additionally, I already own a decent pull-pull potentiometer. It would be much appreciated if you could also reply and teach us this wiring mod.

@@quetzalliband more like a bridge because of the bite of the bridge pickup, but it's not quite there because of the separation of the coils. It's great for that extra oomph.

It's basic electronics. Take a ham radio class. The critical detail is the additional ground lead.

@@blaiseutube Thanks Blaise. Got the standard wiring suggestion. I was thinking (actually hoping) it might go partly down the path of the SSH 5-way config which is a little bit more involved. It's in episode #36 I think. I couldn't get any direction on that one. Dylan and Jimmy did it I think. I'll work it out with Gerry at Haze. Thanks again! -RR

I didn't get to do any modifications to my brand new Classic Vibe Telecaster because when I plugged it in to try it for the first time, none of the pickups worked. It had a bad switch and the body was covered with tiny blemishes. I took it back the next day and got my money back. I won't buy another Squire ! There was a tag on it with four inspectors signatures ! Total disappointment !
